With the reddit hissy fit and all of that jazz.

A better question would be whether or not you'll actually see an appreciable drop-off in posting on Reddit itself. But because it's not the site shutting down but a voluntary user boycott, people actually have to care enough to participate. And most people aren't going to give a shit. The site's going to be mostly business as usual, with a few subreddits closing while others stay open, and some users will avoid the site while others don't.

It's possible some people may not even notice that anything's changed at all, depending on which subreddits they go to. The real question is whether or not it makes enough of an impression for Reddit themselves to notice it in their site statistics. And then if they consider it enough of a dip to care about the implications.

To some extent, it's like all the people who swore they'd leave Twitter forever when Elon Musk bought it. Some did (and tried to migrate to sites like Mastodon), but most people just stayed where they were and continued business as usual. For most people, you'd barely be able to notice anything changed on Twitter at all. Sure, it helped sites like Mastodon grow, but proportionally Twitter lost maybe half of a percent of their userbase. It's possible the people running Twitter barely noticed.

But even if half the people on Reddit suddenly stop posting there forever, none of them are coming here.

but having used reddit even sparingly i totally get it, the site fucking suuuuucks

This describes every social media site that exists, or likely will ever exist though.

The trick is to not to engage with the mainstream aspects of the site. Go looking for smaller groups and fandoms. Hobby boards relating to hobbies that don't involve pretty much everyone who's a part of it being an asshole. Yes, it can be hard to find those pearls in an ocean of shit, but again, that's a problem you're going to have on every site ever made, because the real problem is people.

Some subreddits can be fantastic. I chat on about a dozen or so where everyone is relatively nice and polite (without being "toxically positive" or overly group-think), and where there's all sorts of interesting discussions or conversations. Certainly moreso than anything I've experienced on GameFAQs in the last decade or so. Even when it comes to gaming, you're more likely to find people on Reddit willing to answer questions or talk about games than you are here (unless you're on a subreddit for a more mainstream popular game like Call of Duty, at which point I have no idea what the board is like).

Ultimately, one rule of thumb is that the more obscure the interest, the cooler the people on that subreddit are likely going to be. If you make the effort, Reddit can be fantastic. If you just sit there passively engaging only with whatever hugely popular subreddits the site recommends to you, it's going to be trash.

But let's be honest, most of the boards on GameFAQs are garbage as well. You couldn't have paid me to post on the Politics board before they shut it down. Boards like RI are slower than PotD, while boards like CE are so much worse in terms of content. Board 8 was obsessed with the minutiae of a very specific topic, and has kind of lost focus and purpose now that the site no longer does contests (not too dissimilar from a poll-related board that has stopped talking about polls and has literally been replaced by another). And that's pretty much IT for active social boards on the site (other than the UK-centric one).

Meanwhile, most of the game boards are either dead or insufferable (and barely serve their purpose because for most games, you're better off looking for info on a wiki or a YouTube walkthrough or asking questions on Reddit than you are here). Most of the users are still here more out of apathy and inertia than they are because they love being here. It's why the site doesn't really get new users anymore - because to the outside world, we're a useless site filled with terrible people posting worthless topics about stuff that doesn't matter.

Reddit may be terrible. But no one on GameFAQs really has any right to judge.

The thing is the boycott is only 2 days. This should go on for a month.

The issue is not about making devs pay for the API, but rather they promised they would not be like Twitter and then...immediately made the price the same as Twitter's. And then Spez just making himself look flat out worse with that AMA lying about the Apollo devs.

Twitter and Reddit have similar user metrics. Of course the APIs should be priced similarly.

Well, yeah. Having a successful business get arbitrarily shut down would bother anyone. Especially where the primary reason for the new pricing is that Reddit's trying to cash in on the automated plagiarism boom, which really benefits nobody.

If you're talking about ChatGPT, note that it's just a glorified search engine that is unlikely to replace actual writers any time soon. It's more complacent to make up complete horseshit (such as one lawyer who used ChatGPT for research and ended up citing a bunch of non-existent court cases) than it is to steal anyone's work.

The story is honestly pretty hilarious: https://www.forbes.com/sites/mollybohannon/2023/06/08/lawyer-used-chatgpt-in-court-and-cited-fake-cases-a-judge-is-considering-sanctions/

ChatGPT in particular may struggle to qualify, but ultimately the goal of trawling large bodies of text like Reddit (which Reddit has specifically identified as the reason they want to charge for the API) is to be able to build AIs capable of cobbling together written works from what other people have written. AI art is already exactly that, it just doesn't have quite the same challenges that language has (unless you ask it to draw hands).
