Was it confirmed a shark? I saw something but thought it could be the reflection of the lights from the boat.

Why are people saying he should've grabbed the buoy? The shark was in that direction. He was screwed.
Exactly. He turned away from his one lifeline and we the opposite direction from the buoy and the opposite direction that the ship was going. That makes no sense. There are slowed down videos and freeze frames that show the first shark for sure.

Ratchetrockon posted...
I saw the shark at around 3 sec mark on the left side of the screen it looks small tho
Its sort of hard to tell sometimes, but even a shark the size of your arm can bite your arm off. Besides, I personally think there were at least two sharks on the camera:

The first one that scared him away from the buoy and then it looked like one came in from the top of the frame at his legs before the camera moved to the buoy. When the camera moved back, you could quickly see the first shark (or another one) coming from the left and it looked a lot bigger. Then he was going underwater when the camera got back to him.

I wish that we could isolate the sound and cut out the background stuff to hear what he was shouting.

The buoy is on the left, the guy is on the right, and the shark is in the middle. This is right before he, for whatever reason, swam away from the buoy. Why would you swim away from the one thing that could save you? You can also see a big splash right where the shark is in the middle if you watch the videos in slow motion.

It's easy to sympathize with a family that lost a loved one. It's not as easy to empathize with an 18 year old that willingly jumped into shark infested waters in the dead of night on a lark.

You can see it in the video. There are people who slowed it down and you see the shark whip around in front of him. Then he swam the opposite direction. When the camera panned to the life ring, you could see a shark surface by his legs, but when the camera came back, he was being dragged under. The shark looked pretty big, too. They follow ships to eat stuff that gets thrown over.

RIP

Sorry, forgot to post link, although the video is not in this. Idk if I would get in trouble for posting it.

Yeah, as others have been saying, my point was just that it's all around tragic and it's incredibly easy to feel terrible for all the people involved here. I also found it funny, coming out of a topic this morning in which people were defending a guy who came back with from a club with a woman whose origin we don't know at 5:30 in the morning to find himself drugged and robbed. The latter has a far higher degree of culpability for the consequences that came his way if you ask me (not to mention, the dude could have just poured and his own drink and not sip it after leaving it unguarded with a stranger, it being his place and all), and the worst that happened to him was that he lost a lot of shit he probably didn't need. So this board is a bit morally skewed is all. But you guys be you.

No they're not at all comparable. People hook up with other people that they encounter out on the town and bars all the time. This lady took advantage of the guy by putting drugs in his drink and stealing his belongings. Sharks literally eat people as par and this teen jumped into the water them in the dead of night.

It surprised most people here that shark packs routinely tail human vessels in search of disposed scraps. Add to the fact that the ship was more like a big sailboat then a cruise ship and yeah, I can see an 18 year old with a few drinks in them not knowing better. Stupid? Absolutely. But not dumber than getting robbed by a random hookup, which every guy has heard of.

Please don't misconstrue what I said to be saying he deserved to be drugged. He just had a higher degree of deliberation in a situation that ended up going poorly for him. I'm thankful to hear that nothing worse happened to him, even though things could have gone even further south when you think about the possibilities that come with that vulnerability. And as Kicksave said, a lot of people aren't aware of what lies below cruise ships, especially at age 18.

The information that sharks routinely trail boats would be a complete shock and surprise to anyone that's never been on a boat, but even for a first time visitor on a boat this is information that the guy would know. The company running the boat is a business and they'd have to inform all of their guests what to do in the case of an emergency and the sorts of dangers that they'd run into if someone were to accidentally fall overboard or the what to do if the boat were sinking. It's hard to believe that the people on the boat would have no idea that the water is incredibly cold and hard to swim in, that you can't see anything once you swim a few feet away from the boat, or that there were sharks trailing in the water.

You can slow the footage down and very clearly see a big one coming up on him before the camera moves. Right at his legs from beneath. Then his entire body looked red, like the light was reflecting off bloody water, or it might have pulled him a couple feet under by then.

He's going to need therapy.

We really should criminalize daring people to kill or maim themselves though. Less severe crime than manslaughter or negligent homicide, but I could see it being just below that it happens far too frequently to be legal.

NO WAY. It was during night time in one of the most saturated shark spots in the world. There's apparently 40 different species of sharks that swim around there and they're more inclined to swarm around large cruise ships as well. I think the person who dared the child to jump over should face criminal charges. Unintentional or not, the person who offered the dare created a situation where their negligence of preventing a foreseeable situation ultimately killed the child. Had they not asked the child to jump of the ship, he wouldn't have died. I hope someone fesses up and takes accountability.

Even if you didn't know that there were sharks in the water you'd still be informed enough before the boat even took off on the myriad of other dangers associated with jumping in the water. This 18 year old would have already been well informed enough to know that jumping overboard in the middle of the night is incredibly dangerous and risky regardless of the presence of sharks.
