You can see it in the video. There are people who slowed it down and you see the shark whip around in front of him. Then he swam the opposite direction. When the camera panned to the life ring, you could see a shark surface by his legs, but when the camera came back, he was being dragged under. The shark looked pretty big, too. They follow ships to eat stuff that gets thrown over.

RIP

Sorry, forgot to post link, although the video is not in this. Idk if I would get in trouble for posting it.

A bunch of high school graduates partied on a cruise ship and one of them jumped off of it presumably due to a dare. While all the kids were screeching and going "OH SHIT OH SHIT" the one who jumped off inexplicably started swimming away from the ship and disappeared.

I know sharks follow ships, the ship I was on definitely had ones that followed behind. Either because of food waste, or for any fish that had the misfortune of getting caught in the screws.

I wont go anywhere near the ocean. I mean, I guess Id go to the beach, but not the water. We have had very serious marine wildlife conservation measures over that past few decades, and the efforts are showing. Massive increase in the great white population (even though they suspect that it was a tiger shark in this story).

I think Winston Churchill actually wrote a short story about someone who fell off a ship and then turned around and saw a fin

The sea at night can be very disorienting.

Some have speculated seeing a shark at the three second mark, so he might have been swimming away from that.

The speed is the thing here. People don't realize that a ship that big is cranking along at a pretty good pace. Even if the staff was alerted immediately, it would take a good amount of time to slow down, u-turn, and head back. At night, it's nearly impossible to find someone in the water

In one of the Reddit threads on this, people with experience at sea were saying you get trained that if a person goes overboard, you do not take your eyes off of them. People are very difficult to see in the water, from a ship. Even if you're staring right at them, if you lose sight of them for half a second you'll probably never spot them again.

There are slowed down versions where one shows a large shark whip around by the life preserver and there are some screenshots. The guy intentionally turned away from the life preserver, then it showed one come at hit feet from a 90 degree angle and then he went under.

The authorities will move heaven and earth to quiet it down and claim that it was a current, but you can see a decent sized shark turn around when he goes toward the ring.

I've been on about a dozen cruises, and unless the moon is full and there are no clouds, you can't see 20 yards from the ship. It's just a chasm of black

Really from the video, people noticed right away and even threw in a lifebuoy. If he swam to it and held onto it, he probably would have been found. The water was relatively calm as well. So it seems like it really is the sharks that got him.

Now if you fall from these proper cruise ships at night

Cruise ships have extensive man-overboard procedures, including a ready launch to have in the water in a couple minute's notice along with IR cameras to spot a warm body on the surface. Even yachts above a certain size are required to carry an emergency launch. And that's if they're out of range to get a Coast Guard helicopter overhead to help with the search.

And even with all the procedures and safety gear, about 20 people go overboard every year worldwide and there's about a 75% fatality rate when they do.

A cruise ship is a good place to murder someone. The ocean is huge, there's no law enforcement, and it would take hours for anyone to realize the victim is no longer on the ship. Hell, the cruise ship might even help coverup the crime to avoid any bad publicity.

Still, this whole thing reminds me of a few months back with the passenger who was rescued after accidentally falling off a cruise ship. The ship was able to bust a U-turn at speed and pick them up using a disembarkation boat. Rescue crews called it a miracle.
