Its just server overload.

If anyone would shit on this game I would, but its legitimately and truly an incredible game. I fully recommend it.

Yeah, that's what I meant. Give everything a little bit to calm down.

Also, I've been playing way too many indie games. I looked at the $70 price tag (minimum) and kinda balked. Man, when was the last time I bought a AAA game when it was new? Funny as it sounds, it might have been Diablo 3. (I did pick up Borderlands 3 when it debuted on Steam, but it wasn't full price by then.)

Anyway, I may not have followed the Hearthstone thread for quite a while, but if a Blizzard game has the ulti stamp of approval, that must mean it's fucking amazing.

In 10 years you'll be playing this game for the cost of the base game (and likely expansion) if you want to, a few days of predictable server hiccups isn't a bad tradeoff IMO. How many game series have truly offered as much value as Diablo?

I won't defend the always online aspect really - you should be able to make "only offline" characters. I don't really think of Diablo as an offline game so no biggie for me, but, I get it.

Shine - you missed out on the Reaper of Souls era D3, perhaps the best Diablo experience available. One year of shitty RMAH and 10 years of awesome RoS.

Finished it up, some quick spoilery thoughts on the story. Overall was good for a Diablo story, which admittedly isn't too high of a bar.

-Donan's death might have been the stupidest and most pointless death I've ever seen in a piece of media.
-The woman nearly possessed by Andarial seemed like a completely different character when she returns that I thought it was going to be a plot point. Guessing some rewrites happened at some point with her.
-The party mentions a few times that they don't think Lilith is being truthful about why she's doing everything she is doing and that it isn't for the benefit of Sanctuary, but if she did have an ulterior motive it was never explored or explained. In her death it seemed very much like she did just want to end the eternal conflict.
-Very much a non-ending setting up for more story content. Really hoping that Neyrelle running off with the stone ends up with something other than it being jammed into someone's forehead.
-My boy Duriel!
-I don't understand demon 'death' in the Diablo world. Are only the prime and lesser evils immortal, or is Lilith also still 'alive' somehow even though she was killed? If she is I'm expecting the story to end up with you needing to work with her against the prime evils.

An enjoyable enough ride of a story, now onto the endgame.

I am not sure what pausing has to do with bad server connections erasing your character? I also don't think bad server connections could erase your character in old Diablo games??

I'm not gonna pretend to have any investment here other than fuck Blizzard and the $20 horse armor DLC they rode in on, though.

bad server connections dont directly cause your character to be erased. They can cause you to die though, which would result in a hardcore character being erased. And yes, that could definitely happen in previous Diablo games.

I have lost more than one hardcore character to lag in battle or slow loading times when using a waypoint in Diablo 2

Comes with the territory though and they warn you before you make a character so you just start over again and that is the way

Do you... not know what hardcore is? Hardcore makes it so that when you die, you lose your character forever. So if you have server issues during a fight, you can die and then lose your character. Server connection issues could definitely cause hardcore character death in D3 as well.

He didn't get killed while he wasn't connected, because it disconnected the game automatically killed him.

Are you telling me if you lost internet while soloing in Diablo 1-3 Hardcore your character was eliminated?

That just seems like utter trash, but I guess some people are just that into it that they're willing to accept that. I have permenantly quit games after losing just 2 hours of progress due to a paper outage or something.

Ohhh, I see now. The article has some false information.

"Because a player could potentially deliberately disconnect when their health is low to avoid dying, the game treats a disconnect as a death."

This is not true. Whoever wrote the article just made it up. What actually happened is that his character stayed there for a while after disconnecting and got killed by the monsters.

I wondered about that and how it could possibly be true, but I also think people who play hardcore are weird. Given how long it takes me to level a character, I would never risk losing it to one bad randomly-generated boss....actually, I did try hardcore a little in Diablo 2, but I never got much past killing Andariel.

In other news, I discovered that I do, in fact, know where my authenticator is!

Just starting playing, and already I've got two questions that google searches aren't helping with.

1) How do I zoom the map (M/KB) without the scroll wheel? I don't have one. And kudos to yet another goddamn developer if they baked that control singularly into the mousewheel. I'm not playing controller just so I can zoom the fucking map.
2) My keyboard has a lighting feature, and Diablo immediately took over it as soon as I started. Which was cool for about half a second, but now it's just giving me epilepsy because it's flickering like crazy. Is there a way to disable this?

1) Zooming is pretty much useless in Diablo games except to get a closer look at your character, can't zoom out any further than the default. I unbound it from the scrollwheel to use those for other bindings and can't say I missed it, kind of surprising that you can't rebind it at all though.
2) Should be a 'peripheral lighting' setting under graphics

The MAP. I want to be able to actually view the extent of the world map.

Thank you. At least I won't get seizures tonight.

There are a bunch of other things I'm really not liking about this, but I'm going to not judge too soon.

I just ragequit the game today. We'll see if I go back.

I'm playing melee rogue. I have two traps and stabby abilities. It's generally working fine. And then I get to Brol.

I quickly learn that Brol has a really large attack radius, hits like a truck, and his attacks basically can't be avoided. If you try to maintain distance, then he just charges you...and you're not really dealing damage. So you can avoid them, run in after, but then he does another attack you have to dodge. So it's a really dumb hit-and-fade game...until he summons in a swarm of obnoxious adds. And then all bets are off.

I died 5 or 6 times, churning through my potions too quickly, before I concluded that the only recourse I had was to run laps around him, dropping poison trap, and hoping I could guide him through it. This was exactly how I had to kill Duriel the first time in Diablo 2 with my sorceress, and it was by far my least favorite experience in a Diablo game until now.

But at least I could pause.

This run is going on 30 minutes, with the boss low on health, when my cat jumps up on the desk, looking for treats and attention. It's the time of the night where I normally give him treats and attention. But I couldn't do that, because I'm fighting Brol. Really slowly. And with no margin for error. So he lays down on my desk, and I just know he's going to knock my controller on the floor. (I'm playing M/KB.) So I quick snatch it and drop it lightly, and as a freaking self-fulfilling prophecy, somehow it lands button side down and takes over my controls. I curse very loudly, kick the controller (which somehow was resting with the stick at an angle,) and chase the cat away, only barely able to salvage the run by jamming every defensive option and chugging all my potions.

Like 10 minutes later, I politely tickle away the rest of Brol's health bar, and I'm fuming because it was a stupid harrowing experience AND I was mean to my cat, just because in Blizzard's infinite wisdom, there's no goddamn way to pause the game. Oh look, this is a "multiplayer" game. You can't pause in multiplayer.

Yeah, fuck your multiplayer. If it was such a multiplayer game, where were my friends who didn't answer my request to help me kill this asshole so I didn't have to resort to such stupid tactics? I'm aware there are aspects of this situation that were within my control -- I could have unplugged the controller. I could have explored playing a different build. I could have waited for someone to join my game. But I shouldn't have to.

The fact that this game is World of Diablo screws with so much, and I don't find the moment-to-moment action fun. Captivating, in its own way, but after I'm done, I have to ask, "but was I enjoying that, or just enthralled by it?" And no, those aren't the same thing.

Funny I find myself not wanting to play much more tonight too but I'm not in the same situation as you. My Barb is level 73 and the progress has just slowed to a crawl. It takes like 2 hours just to get 1 level and I know it's going to keep getting worse. It feels like I have no damage and doing nightmare dungeons with the occasional helltide until my eyes bleed just isn't very exciting.

So I switched to a Sorc and hit level 10 but it's honestly boring as fuck too. You can only cast your core spells like 2 times before you have to spam primary attacks until your mana regens.

I've put a lot of time into Diablo and ARPGs and this game is not doing anything to keep me engaged or want to keep playing. The campaign was fine and I probably have 50+ hours so I can't complain too much I guess but this game has been pretty disappointing.

Currently a level 52 sorc in early act 3

Once I hit 50 I switched from the Chain lightning build to the arc lash endgame build and its really goofy playing a sorc that doesn't actually use MP at all but I don't hate it
