Maybe not for live action stuff but for animated movies/shows do you think AI will eventually be good enough that it will be cheaper/easier for companies to just use AI voices instead of having to pay for voice actors?

I mean...some folks say the same about current voice acting, so I'd expect to see more A.I. voiced extras in the near future. Like the ones that are just there to gasp and give generic reaction lines.

Apparently people are already predicting this will take away the jobs of all Audio Book narrators. I heard some rumors that Amazon is preparing to have future Audibles just use A.I. voices

I'm hoping it isn't true. No matter how good it gets, I don't like the idea of robots being narrators. I like to hear a real human voice

SFM and Gmod videos took to it. As long as they can make it say the words they want without having to sentence mix or find a voice actor, they don't care about line delivery.

I was going to disagree until I saw the word commercially.

I'm torn. Maybe AI voices can be used for smaller roles like NPCs. Or to generate a massive world with thousands of people. It could certainly make development easier and cheaper.

Game development isn't anywhere near as expensive as it's touted. Most of the budget is blown on advertisement, which AI will likely be used in en masse already but due to the scummy nature of the entire industry, will likely not change costs at all. For AAA games anyway.

Pretty much this. A couple of years ago I'd have said no, but tech is advancing so fast that it now seems like an inevitably. The biggest obstacle right now isn't the technology, it's the sourcing of voices. Like obviously any half-way intelligent voice actor is not going to grant rights to their voice. So it won't replace current VAs as a vocal identity. But there are enough open source voices or non-VAs willing to sell their voice as a "stock voice" that AI voice libraries will be expansive enough to fill any role you need.

A lot of lawsuits will be incoming.

I don't necessarily have a problem with this so long as it's for an existing character, the actor/estate agrees, and most importantly the pay to the actor/estate is competitive with what it would cost to hire a real voice actor so their is no cost savings in using an AI.

So wanna use AI Jones for Vader or Mufasa, fine. But you can't use him for an original character and you aren't saving money by doing so.

Possibly. AI voice tech has advanced rapidly, but that doesn't mean its going to hit some snag before it truly becomes believable.

Then again, it doesn't have to be perfect, I once made a post on a fake AVGN video review and had the words "AI" in the title. However, some people must have ignored the AI part of the title and thought it was an actual episode.

I think part of the issue here is that most scenes do not need a great delivery, and also that most existing scenes already do not have a great delivery.

It's not AI voice, but I was recently talking with some people about the possibility to use text generating AI for writing item descriptions in games. I thought it's coming sooner than you'd expect, while they were mostly skeptical saying it would not be as good as a human, it would be soulless, they would never prefer it over actual written text... and then I open up Afterimage (relatively new metroidvania) that is by all means a great game except the item descriptions are this (yes, this is the entire description)
