Finding an inactive board a la Hellhole is a possibility, but it won't really be advertised and if discussion becomes too heated then the same response will likely follow. Repeat ad infinitum.

I almost never used the board at all but wouldn't it have been better to warn people beforehand? Or at least have it be read-only as an archive for some genuinely helpful posts? Just closing this decade long board without any warning is incredibly user-unfriendly and doesn't bode well for this site's future.

Yes, closing it abruptly without a heads up is the most unprofessional way they could have handled it. The regular users of the board deserved better.

All the recommendations I've seen are terrible comparisons to here. Things like reddit, Twitter, Tiktok, Facebook, etc. are terrible for conversations/discussions based on their designs. Places like ResetEra, NeoGAF, 4chan, etc. are too much of echo chambers.

I'd honestly recommend Resetera. It's mellowed out significantly since the initial several years and many posters often poke fun of the site itself and its users without any trouble these days. If you steer clear of the zealous mods and any big trending controversial subjects, I'd say the users are on average some of the most civil nowadays.
Of course, you need a paid email to register which might be too much of a bother for casual internet posting.

Most businesses like it when people regularly come to their website and try to encourage more of that. They do have other groups, though not many. They could be cutting Politics group loose as part of a larger effort to attract a new group, but I can't see who they're going to draw in.

If you're not liberal you can stick to the game or other media topics and keep quiet about any politically charged topics that come up. But yeah, it wouldn't be a fun place if you're not liberal. 261 was pretty liberal though and was centered around politics so if you were fine with that you should be fine there. The business email part is probably an end to that though. Maybe NeoGAF would be better for you? I don't know much about that though as it's slowed down immensely. One traditional forum I go to is the tvtropes forum but I'd say that's actually more of an echo chamber than resetera since simply "being rude" as dictated by the mods is a violation and you definitely have to be liberal there too.

I always noticed that people who said this were the same ones always getting banned for making racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, homophobic, and/or transphobic posts. Then those people went on to make the MAGA board, supposedly as a haven away from us meanies who bully them by not accepting their calls for discrimination and genocide.
