Rudy Gobert isn't anywhere near good enough a player to put up with the shit that he brings with him. He's not even worth his contract in isolation nevermind with the huge trade package they had to give up. You'd arguably rather have Walker Kessler straight up.

I'm not sure what the Twolves do from here. Gobert is bordering on a negative asset with his contract but it's hard for them to blow it up when they traded away all their picks. What Edwards said in the presser is hardly encouraging and almost sounded like he wants out.

for the record, going back to brunson, the texts that cuban was showing are claiming that they couldn't actually have offered the extension while he was signed; that the brunsons weren't having it because they were limited to 4/56.

So from cuban's pov, brunson wouldn't take the extension and then he got shut out of even negotiating during FA

Reports from the time seem to suggest that the Mavs only tried to discuss the extension after the trade deadline. At which point it was very clear Brunson would get substantially more if he waited it out to free agency.

So I'd have to agree that this is on the Mavs. They seemingly didn't want to pay him when Brunson wanted to discuss an extension because they weren't sure he was worth the contract. Then they only tried to offer it after they were restricted to offering a way below market rate. They basically tried to hedge their bets and waited too long.

I've never seen a trade that everyone knew was bad, somehow get so much worse over the course of the season.

More so that it became apparent that they players they had didn't really work for any one involved. Granted that could be a coaching/utilization thing, but they are what their record suggests. An average team. Trade didn't elevate any aspect of their team.

Basically, in my eyes it went from a very easy to see over pay by Minnesota, to basically an indescribable type of bad trade, the punch was just the cherry on top.

Give it a couple more years with him and they improve, I'll eat crow. Right now that trade did nothing except give them no assets for the future.

You don't make that trade to fight for the play-in and it was clear most of the season that's where they were headed. Also there's an argument to he made that Walker Kessler out performed Gobert as it was anyways. It really was shooting your franchise in both feet and getting a coupon for new shoes in return.

It got worse without the punch happening because you at least figured you would get a year or two of Gobert being the same player. All his stats and defensive metrics are the lowest they have been since 2016 from what I read. You don't make the trade for the drop off to happen this year.

He may not even make an all-nba defense team and his defense is why you take him.

they traded for a 30yo center while they had an all star center on the roster. i don't think that the fit being poor can really be considered unexpected. and minnesota's defense is better this year than last.

my point is yes it has been a disaster but that disaster seemed quite apparent from the moment the trade itself happened.

Kat is a center in name only; he just wants to hang out on the perimeter and shoot 3s, and he's not a great interior defender iirc. I think it was perfectly feasible to expect him and gobert to play well together and for gobert to give them something they didn't already have.

The problem is that he wasn't worth that many 1sts. But gobert had value.

KAT is a center because he can't guard anyone faster than another center, so playing the two of them was always going to be less of an upgrade to the defense than you'd expect though

I mean let's not forget though, KAT missed like 2/3rds of the season. Edwards may have taken a step up but the wolves were still missing one of their top options.

KAT is tall man but that's not the same as big man

KAT played more PF than C this season by the metrics. Limited sample size of 29 games though.

Even without the assets given up to acquire Gobert, his issue will always be you cannot pay a player of Goberts skill set that salary unless you're Clippers / Warriors level of not giving a fuck about luxury / repeater tax. In isolation he's good but he does not give you enough over similar level centers to warrant the price tag so it's a nightmare to build a team around that.

Someone should. Injuries are terrible to occur and you have to properly heal, but also you should be taking care of your health otherwise and at least try to be available to be on the court. Zion has either been injured or out of shape for most of his career. His talent is sky high and could have been the face of the league and instead he's on the bench, it's a shame.

I think Pelicans are getting ready to sell high on him and there's going to be takers. If I'm OKC I am considering giving up a couple of your million picks to try and pick him up and have all your assets, Chet and Zion available for next year and hopefully between the two of them they get 82 games somehow

it will take more than a couple of picks. The problem is we know what zion can be and so that is what the pels would ask for him, if they tried to trade him. Healthy zion is worth the full 4 1sts and 3 swaps package from your average team.

If you want an optimistic note about Zion, he's played more games in his first four seasons than Embiid did.

yeah but embiid was legitimately injured. Zion by all indications is poorly conditioned.

Yeah, it's not exactly the same scenario, but the point is that there's still time for Zion to turn this around.

Also the problem doesn't seem to be entirely conditioning. He also doesn't seem to want to play if he's not close to 100% healthy, and he's eventually going to have to get over that.
