back in the day people said you were an asshole if you didn't tip or didn't tip enough. now many people would be alright with that.

I still think you're an asshole if you don't tip. All well and good that they should get paid more, but they aren't.

Not sure what you're talking about. Anyone from outside of North America always thought tipping was incredibly stupid. Americans and Canadians have more recently become loudly irritated that tipping is a bullshit wage subsidy that the service industry has foisted on customers but normal people still realize that its unfair to hurt workers by not tipping at all.

every single person thinks tipping is a negative except for the business owners who benefit from not having to pay their fucking staff a reasonable wage

Its the sulfite surrounding it If tipping was considered optional (since thats what it is), then it wouldnt be a big deal. You could tip based on the services of the individual But now, even with shorty service, it feel required to tip. Even if the server was terrible and barely ever came by But if you dont tip them, they still get mad And its mostly the US. Other countries pay staff well. While people say it should be 20% or more in the US, other places at less. European countries only do 10%, IIRC And I think its considered rude in Japan to tip And while people try to fight for better pay for waiters and waitresses, most dont want it because they want the tips. Becuase in the end, most get paid more than minimum wage employees with tips. Yet people still consider them special Its kind of ridiculous

I think tipping has always been seen as a negative. Especially when it's seen as an expectation. For example there's more than one joke about tipping in Home Alone 2. What has changed recently is people are now being asked to tip before service has been rendered. Further there are cases where a tip is automatically applied to a bill without the customers consent.

this guy does a pretty good breakdown on it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHVrCYmJPwA

tldr: it's a holdover from the reconstruction era where employers were trying to screw over black service employees by not paying them. still do it because that's the situation we're in as a society right now

I tip even though I live on $1000 or less a month and only make $9 an hour when I tutor.

I tip well even, but it should be mentioned I rarely ever eat out at all, and I usually do so frugally.

Last time I ate out was at olive garden. The waitress there knows me, and also that I tip, but also knows I make very little money, my cars window was broken out etc. She saved me money by having 3 meatballs for 3.95 instead of $2 per meatball like normall (I got 6 of them for $8). Total with tax was less than 10$ and I left 14$ for her.

Now if I had bought 6 meatballs normally at 2.10 each, the base cost would have been $14 before tip, so that worked out very well for me, and she was happy.

The happiness or non-ager/sadness is the reason I tip even though every waitress/waiter in the world (yes even in states that don't give them min wage + tips like mine) make more money than me.

If you tip, their day is a bit better, if you don't it's a bit worse. I've had friends/roomates etc who work tipping jobs, and even here in WA they are really upset if they have a bad day of tips.

Not worth the little amount of money to ruin a persons day in my opinion. It shouldn't be our responsibility to tip them, certainly not about 50% of americans who make $15 or less an hour, but that is sadly the way it is. I would totally get behind getting rid of tipping universally, but sadly the opposite is true, more and more jobs are asking for tips, uber drivers for instance.....They already cost a ton, but now expect to be tipped as well.

I just wish there was some kinda card that you could use that would provide tips based on your income or something so if you make less than someone you don't have to tip them and they don't feel bad about it. I certainly don't think tipping should be required to eat out, that should be available to everyone.

Tipping needs to be abolished. There are restaurants in America that already function by that model, so there's literally no excuse. It's just greed.

We also need to switch over to metric. But that's for a different topic.

It's gotten absurdly out of hand lately, which is a big factor. I no longer tip anywhere except for if I actually sit down and eat and am waited on. Most of the time I'm ordering take out if I'm eating out though and I don't think a tip is justified for playing cashier for 15 seconds.
