This is one of the reasons you should buy games without DRM. There are games that have problems with newer versions of Windows that are gonna be unplayable because of the Steam DRM and lack of Windows 7 support. GOG installers work on Windows XP and some games work on 98 if you install them on a newer OS and copy the game files over.

There is an answer for those that don't want to get rid of their windows. Just set up your system so it dual boots into Linux. Linux is free, some versions work very similar to windows, and Steam will nearly always support Linux. Actually from what I remember hearing, Gabe actually prefers Linux and will go out of his way to make sure things run properly on Linux. Especially with the Steam Deck running Linux naturally.

again, you don't have to get rid of your windows. Either set up a dual boot on an SSD that you can load into when you restart your computer, or if you have enough ram use a virtual machine, though it won't perform as well.

You don't want Linux to get mainstream. The reason there are so little viruses and issues with Linux or MAC outside of user error is because no one codes viruses for those platforms, because they think no one uses them.

Steam is keeping you safe by making you upgrade your fourteen year old operating system. Stop using outdated shit that isn't supported by even Microsoft anymore. Its asking for trouble.

Honestly, there's no reason to not upgrade with the state of the Internet these days. 10 is five, I've used 11 too and it is... Less fine for gaming but acceptable.

I say that as someone who hasn't upgraded to 11 yet granted, but that's because my PC doesn't support it and I've had more important stuff to spend money on than a PC.

Instead of Steam not running on those older systems, why not just stop supporting updates to those Steam installs so user can still play their games on whicher OS they prefer?

If people want to play their Steam games on an old, unsupported system, let them. Limiting options sucks for everyone.

Right? I can't figure out why people are running Windows 8/8.1 at all. Statistically it's the OS no one used full of features no one wanted or asked for.

For Windows 11? It does have requirements that mandate a CPU newer than a Intel 7th Gen or AMD equivalent. Your motherboard also needs to have a TPM module.

Could it be cheaper to replace those with the required parts? I feel that buying a new computer just for Steam is like buying a new car for the cupholders.

Definitely. I wouldn't suggest buying a new machine but if you're going for an Intel CPU, you'll probably have to replace the motherboard and RAM while you're at it, as the socket type will be different.

Most motherboards post 2015 or so already come with a TPM module pre installed.

You can still upgrade to Windows 10 with not much issue if you still have your key and just use your that to install W10 with the Windows Media Creation Tool.
