There are games that have problems with newer versions of Windows that are gonna be unplayable because of the Steam DRM and lack of Windows 7 support. Linux is free, some versions work very similar to windows, and Steam will nearly always support Linux. I wouldn't suggest buying a new machine but if you're going for an Intel CPU, you'll probably have to replace the motherboard and RAM while you're at it, as the socket type will be different.
