I always thought tipping based on how much the meal costs is really stupid.

How much harder is it for a servant to bring out a $40 steak than a $10 tray of nachos? The nachos would probably be even more awkward

I tip 12-15% across the board, or $1 per drink at a bar. There's nothing anyone can do or say to make it different. This is the compromise I'm willing to do for stupid tipping customary. Get a different job, or unionize and strike, if the occasional "bad" tip bothers you.

There are some occasions where the waiter gives me food on the house for a long wait or something in which case I'll tip more

WAit, the manager had to explain to the customers that "tips are usually 20 percent."

I hate tipping so much and I waited tables for several years. Like imagine thinking that because of "tipping" it's okay for a manager to go to a customer and say "hey, YOU aren't paying MY employee enough money."

Is exactly why tipping should not be a percentage. If the food is more expensive that doesnt mean the waitress or waiter is doing more work for you that should warrant such a high tip. I had a $30 check recently and the waitress was really great, but the 20% would be $6. I gave her $10 instead. They dont make your drink or your food yet they expect to make more in tips than what the people who make the drinks and food do lol.

I tip for good service. If I go to Applebee's and the server can barely take the time to take my order never offers to refill my drinks and I have to wave them down just to get the check well then enjoy your 2 dollar tip. I worked as a dishwasher when I was younger so I know how much these servers make compared to the other staff that actually works. The tips should be shared amongst the entire staff not just the people with the easiest job.

Why do people get so weird when it comes to defending tipping? Wait staff is worried if they get paid a normal wage based on the work they do itd only be $10-15 hr. Its not the customers fault and it never will be.

Not tipping is stupid and shitty. We are stuck with this system until it changes, but would you want to live in poverty and be fired as a small sacrifice to push to abolish tipping? Do you think the large corporations will actually see it as a protest of tipping, or will they just fire "underperforming" employees?

I think the bigger issue here is that they tipped so low after staying so longassuming she has about 4 to 8 tables shes assigned to for a shift, and shes expected as a server to turn a table about once an hour or so during dinner rush, if the average bill is, lets say $200 (Im being conservative here and assuming that the $700 bill was unusually high) and the average group tips 20%, then over the course of 3 hours on a busy night she could expect to make about $120. If Im wrong and the average bill is actually closer to $500-700 for that particular table (maybe its an eight top or something) then shes looking at $300-$420 in tips over the course of 3 hours. Instead she gets $70.

Keep in mind this is a Sunday night shift, and tipped workers make the vast majority of their money on weekend nights. Average rent for a 1 bedroom in New York City is like $2,000 a month.

So yeah, Id be a little ticked off too if a customer wasted three or more hours of my time, costing me potentially hundreds of dollars of earnings during the prime earning hours of my week.

(Obviously the solution is to end the tipping system, unite all workers as a class, seize the means of production by force and put an end to wage slavery once and for all, but in the absence of the ability to presently do that I think the occasional tweet to vent ones frustrations is fair.)

You start paying servers 10-15/hour, all you're doing is ensuring mid tier service. Those are high school wages.

I mean, tipping is kind of stupid, and complaining on twitter also is stupid, but so many people in here saying $70 is a great tip is just wrong. 20% of the bill is customary, more if you had really good service, less if you had bad service. $70 was a very low tip for a $700 bill.

How does that work out? I live in a country where it's okay to not tip. People sometimes round up, but service is paid the equivalent of $23 an hour and are guaranteed 25 days of paid leave (without public holidays) so no one ever flips out like how TC described it.
