Comparing it to Elden Ring is dumb. The Souls series is a long running franchise with a large built-in fanbase that's been around since the PS3 days. Hogwarts Legacy is a fun single player experince. People beat it, then moved on.

Here is og skyrim 4 years after release. Its playerbase moved on to the special edition (about 22k players on there and extra 2k still playing the og version rn. not bad for an almost 12 year old single player game lol).

also skyrim numbers didn't drop to the 70k range till 3 months after release and it had a lower 24 hour record peak than HL (was only like 280k on steam) so higher player retention. Fewer pc gamers when it released in 2011 tho tbf.

I wonder how well the next elder scrolls will do

There's something about Elder Scrolls/Fallout and GTA that just hasn't been replicated by other open world games. They're always going to be on top when it comes to long term appeal.

Elden Ring and probably Breath of the Wild are probably the closest.

I dont know what the deal is with people either saying something is amazing or trash. No Im between. Based on how you are talking you are implying that since Hogwarts wasnt amazing like Elden Ring, people must bought that bad game to own the libs. The more likely outcome is that people bought it, enjoyed it for a month, got what they wanted out of it then dropped it.

Elden Ring of all things is a specious comparison, frankly.

HLTB has Hogwarts Legacy = 40 hours (semi-completionist run). No multiplayer. 1.2% drop rate.
HLTB Elden Ring = 99 hours (same). Potential for endless PVP or PVE multiplayer. 3% drop rate.

I played Elden Ring as a completionist and it took me a good chunk of 2022; right now I'm still putting in more hours because I'm playing co-op with a best friend. A far better metric to understand engagement would either be HLTB or the PSN trophies for the main game completion rate.

The game is like majority of story driven single player games(think every highly rated playstation exclusive)..no replay value. Elden Ring, TES, Fallout, GTA have player driven content, multiple endings, very different possible playstyles and massive replay value good for years and years. There's no political flex here and people who hate the game or its customers "lost" the whole debacle any way you slice it. The game was a huge hit and now Harry Potter movie verse is being revived/expanded.
