I remember feeling like that when I started. Especially during the night. You get pretty used to it the more you understand, when you get lost and going straight up isn't an option, all bets are off.

Fear is half the battle.

Then factor in the disorientation in caves, not knowing which way is up or down.

And then the oxygen/food/water battle is always a blast

8/10 game though

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

The second one began as DLC for the first game and it very, very shows. The map is smaller with fewer biomes, there are fewer fishes, all that kinda stuff.

Below Zero is a solid game in its own right and I do recommend it, but you should absolutely play them in order. Particularly because BZ is a sequel and spoils the first game.

And yes, Subnautica is somehow not a horror game but is absolutely a horror game. The most frightening thing for me wasn't the leviathans - I actually missed Sammy and only had a couple encounters with the reapers throughout the entire game - it was the ocean itself. Like the most scared I was in the entire game was the first time I was just in a void. Too deep to see light from the surface. Too high to see the ocean floor. Just pure, dark water all around.

Took me for-fucking-ever to get past that spot where there's ocean floor, ocean floor, and then a sudden, massive drop-off into darkness.

I too am afraid of the depths of the ocean but those games are quite bright and you can see everything. An endless abyss is what scares me.

I also spent a long time standing on top of the escape pod at the start. I was so excited when they announced it was free on ps4, but then standing there staring at the water, I did NOT wanna jump in.

Then I had the same experience with each new frontier. Open ocean with no view of the bottom? An area with an unfamiliar fish? Diving into caves? I'd just find somewhere else to be or something else to do. I only managed to force myself to advance when there was nothing else I could possibly think to do.

There was also a point where I needed to find something in a deep, dark section and instead of diving or driving, I tried building a base that stretched from the surface to my destination. I think it's technically possible to do, but at some point it got too tedious and the ps4 would threaten to explode around bases that were too complex.

Also I never got used to being out at night. I would just wait in my base until the sun rose again. If I happened to emerge from a cave system and realize it was dark out, I'd panic and rush back to my surface base at full speed lol.

That game was agonizing, but very cool. I'd recommend playing with hunger turned off though. I know it's about survival and it is neat developing solutions for it, but hunger and thirst are way too needy and they mess up your rhythm so much.

My first venture into the deeper parts at night...creeped the hell out of me. I had nothing but some air pumps and pipes. I went in the game completely blind. I got to the deeper areas, so I installed the air pumps and pipes; at night lol. It was scary as hell doing it at night and it felt like there wasn't a bottom to the depths. Of course eventually you don't need air pumps after unlocking the suit upgrades and vehicles but not knowing that and going in blind is scary.

Subnautica ended up being one of my all time favorites. It scared the hell out of me, but it was such an amazing experience. Highly recommend it to everyone. And go in as blind as you can (you may need to look up how to find certain materials though). I got my girlfriend to play it and she's been loving it.

It's because the game is unintentionally horrifying with the deep dark ocean (yay thasalassophobia) and all of the things you see and hear in it. The story slowly starts to come together as you explore and I loved that.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Below Zero is great, but as pegusus explained, you definitely shouldn't play it before playing the first one. I actually appreciated the second game for being less terrifying than the first lol.

I was pretty scared when I first played it. Made me consider I may have a phobia of the deep water.

Though, in repeat playthroughs I didn't get that nearly as much. Not from the sequel either. So I guess it was more fear of the unknown maybe.

But yeah, it's literally the only game or movie that's managed to creep me out like that and there wasn't even anything happening. lol

All of the above is my guess. >:[

Once I built a base in the volcanic area late in the game. Got the thermal energy up and running, a simple living space, an aquarium for infinite snack fish... then the stupid stalker variants started shooting fireballs THROUGH THE WALLS of the base and THROUGH THE TANK, killing the fish I was saving and breeding for food. I don't think they ever killed off all of them, but if I'd kept running operations in that base, I'm sure they would have eventually. I was devastated that I put all that work into building a sustainable base there and they cheated me out of it.

Ya know... I've never actually thought of makeing a thermal-poewerd base in the lava zone. First base ends up being a be-all-end-all, second is optional and usually somewhere in the green briny area, then get the thermal upgrade for the submarine and GG.

I'd reccomend ditching fish as a food source and switch to 4 plants (forget the name, but they were a great source of food n water. Always save the last fruit/seed to grow a new one and you'll never run out). And kill shit. Get your stungun n thermal knife and karve some bastards up. (But never kill regular Stalkers. Also, killing those purple teleporters is usually a wase of time) Even Reapers/JuvenileGhosts. But for the dragon emperor things, I'd reccomend a Prawn with a lasso and drill.

Yeah, my shallows base was my go-to with one of every facility, plenty of storage, and cozy decor to help emotionally recover from adventures in the deep. I had a few other really basic rest stops and a sustainable house in the lost river. When I got to lethal lava land, I wanted another fully functional base cuz I was tired of driving all the way back to the surface past the ghost leviathans every time I needed something. Had I realized how close I was to the end of the game at that point, I probably wouldn't have bothered. I didn't trick out my sub too much cuz powering it was a little tricky and I always figured I'd just end up driving it into a leviathan's open mouth eventually anyway.

I did like to keep plants in my bases for both food and decoration as well. They're just slow to grow and many don't offer the same calories or hydration as fish and purified water, so I wanted quick and easy food available, too. Containment tanks are great for it if your fish don't get fucking murdered through the walls.

Heh. Losing it was a huge fear for me which is eactly why I tricked it out murdered every thing that posed a threat. Just navigating the thing down there is an anxiety attack and a half.

Maybe it was my playstyle that made them work so well for me, then. I'd kill a tree, fill my hunger/thirst up to max, go out and do things, and be nearly starving/dehydrated by the time I return. Plenty of time for trees to grow 40 to 70 percent, so with 3 or 4, I just never ran out. In terms of actually takiing rations with you, though, nothing beats pure water. Thirst seems to drop faster than hunger, plus thermal knife... does that insta-fry food you kill with it, or am I remembering some other game?

Thalassophobia is the intense, persistent, and irrational fear ( phobia) of large bodies of water, such as the ocean, sea, or large lakes.

So you probably have that. I only mention it because I have it too. I tried playing Subnautica, lasted only a couple hours, then had to return the game to the store lol. I remember one I got caught swimming really far out into the ocean and a.blizzard thunder storm came, so all around was mostly darkness as I was trying to swim through everything, as I hear groaning and such noises from below. That was that

Typically you want to build near entrances to the deeper zones. Note that the deeper you build the more hull reinforcement will be required.

I build a quick simple base in the red grass area and then when it's time to start hitting up the late game biomes will park a base directly over the entrance to said biomes.
