Board 8 > How is the Fatal Frame series?

More specifically, how are Maiden of Black Water and Mask of the Lunar Eclipse? They're the only ones available on Steam. This is a horror series I always knew about, but didn't seem to have the reach of RE or SH.

Haven't played them, but general opinion seems to be that 1-3 are much better than 4 and 5 (the games on Steam)

I like Maiden of Black Water, but if you're not already a fan of the series you will HATE it imo. It's so slow (like literally everything is slow - running, picking up items, combat) so you need a lot of patience. Also you backtrack through the same areas the whole game and it gets tiresome.

Same goes with Mask of the Lunar Eclipse tbh but it's a little bit closer to the spirit of the original trilogy.

I'd say really only touch this series in general if you have a keen interest in Japanese horror/folklore or have a lot of patience to spare.

Wait, aren't these also in the original trilogy? Did it get worse in the newer games?

I've only played the first 3 so far but they're enjoyable enough. They all had a lot of backtracking as well so i can't see how it gets worse in the newer ones.

Yes WAY WAY WAY worse, and also item pick-ups were instant in the original trilogy. In the latter ones you literally have to watch a 5 second animation to pick up items just because there's this cheesy mechanic where a ghost hand comes out to grab you once in awhile. It's pretty egregious honestly.

Honestly, backtracking is the wrong word. It's more like the same areas just keep getting reused over and over again without any real variation or change to them.

Maiden of Black Water is great, but the PS2 ones are even better

2 > 3 > MoBW

Yikes. I love Fatal Frame but that does sound pretty painful.

I've only played the first 2 and part of 3, but I got the general impression that 2 and 4 were considered to be the best ones, and 3 was the worst one (because of the weird arbitrary way it's broken up with the chapter system and across multiple characters).
