Have you ever driven a hybrid vehicle before?

What did you think?
If not, would you think about getting a hybrid during your next car search?

I sound like a survey.

Ive never driven one, but Im thinking my next vehicle will be either a plug-in hybrid or fully electric. Really depends on the state of the technology in 5-10 years.

I've driven both a hybrid and an electric vehicle, although I've never owned one.

They drive fine...in the sense that they are as boring as anything else. I wouldn't want to own an electric until the infrastructure is better prepared, but I'd happily buy a hybrid if I did the math and found that the cost of owning one over 10 years appeared comparable to a gas guzzler.

I switched over to an electric mower recently with no regrets.

Yeah, the new vehicles in my work fleet are all hybrids. They're a little unnerving if you aren't used to how quiet they are (I've fielded several calls from people who thought the car wasn't starting because they were unfamiliar with hybrids), but I kinda like it for city driving because it gives the extra mini-challenge of trying to maximize charging/minimize engine use, making those boring errands a little less so.

Maintenance may throw a wrench into it, but a major component of that is going to be how much city driving you do versus highway. Hybrids offer very little advantage over ICE's for highway driving, but the mileage difference for city driving is huge. Regenerative braking is an absolute game-changer.

Yep - that's exactly what I'd try to figure. I suspect I'm suburban enough that the math wouldn't quite work, but it does work for some...

I've driven some before. I guess they are okay, but I wouldn't feel safe on a speedy highway with one. That said, I'm still impressed that the technology has even become this commercially viable. I know it is still kind of bad, but the first round of hybrids were janky.

Cars are great, especially ICE engines, hybrids are lame, like who looks at a prius and thinks it's a badass car?

I've tried a couple (though I don't actually own one), and generally prefer them to regular gasoline cars. They're generally more efficient for the sorts of uses I'd have, and the downsides (about power or 'coolness' or other such things) are things I don't care about at all.

What kind of loser worries about how badass their car looks? A car is a tool, existing solely to work around decades of poor city design choices spurred on by propaganda from the very companies selling those cars. Buying one to look cool (and especially mocking those who buy them with some modicum of environmental consciousness in mind instead of prioritizing how cool they look) just means you've deep-throated that propaganda so hard that it's become part of your personality, and that's just sad.

Plus, that's without considering that most modern hybrids are visually indistinguishable from other cars, and in fact many mainstream models simply have a hybrid version available. Defaulting to the Prius as the archetypal hybrid shows that you're not only being an insufferable car enthusiast, you're being an insufferable car enthusiast who hasn't updated his "insults" in 15 years. For a 30-year-old, that's not exactly a good thing.

Yeah, I can't necessarily speak to your specific situation. Even if you're relatively suburban, though, suburban "highways" often have plenty of lights and start-stop traffic (especially during commuting hours), which is when hybrids excel over ICE's. It can be hard to figure out the exact difference, especially where a lot of newer models won't necessarily have the necessary maintenance cost data to do a proper comparison, but it might work out in hybrids' favour.

I don't think any car is badass, what is badass about using the least possible amount of physical effort to move your body

and do you think looking badass is worth the cost of nearly $1,000 per month?

You could technically argue that it's possible to use less if somebody else is driving, but categorizing "push pedal" and "turn wheel" and maybe even "wiggle stick" as meaningful physical effort would be a bit silly.

It's not what others think (at least if I were to buy one), I want a car I think looks good, so you care about what your clothes look like or what your house/lawn looks like?

One of me roommates drives a hybrid Prius, I've had to drive it around before when he was not sober to drive. My other roommate drives an electric Nissan Leaf. I've had to drive that to move it out of the way so I could get my car from the parking spots and I've also had to drive it to go wash it; she never washes it but complains that it's dirty.
My car is a Subaru BRZ and I love it, I've wanted it for a long time and hope it lasts a long time, but I'd like my next car to be electric.

Yes, we used to own a couple of Subarus and a Prius. Right now were in the market for an electric pickup and trying to get solar panels. California gas is always too expensive so if we just buy gas for the lawn mowers, a generator, and an ATV, well save money. Right now we have a Tesla Model 3 and gas powered GMC Sierra.
