It seems more like bad actors want woke left to be offended by Tropical Thunder even though as far as I can tell no one is. Every time someone from that movie is interviewed by someone even slightly leftwing the issue of black face in that film is brought up.

The blackface stuff I don't think the vast majority of people don't have a problem with due to the context. Having an actual black character spend the entire movie pointing out the racism of it, in a way that the audience is supposed to agree with, softens the potential offensiveness of it.

The Simple Jack plotline, and the abundant and casual use of the r-slur, I think is less favorably viewed given that it doesn't really have the same subversion within the plot.

People can talk about how a movie has aged poorly in a cultural sense, and a lot of them have, but asking someone to apologize for it well after the fact is pretty stupid

Are we gonna ask for apologies about Song of the South, or old Looney Tunes with racially insensitive stuff, or movies like Blazing Saddles? Why? Who does that serve? They're products of their time, and we shouldn't be venerating them or anything; but asking for an apology is such a waste of time and energy.

i mean it kinda does. the point of the "full r word" scene is to lampoon the fact that not only did hollywood actors take roles portraying those with a disability in order to win awards or for the sake of their own "artistry", but also pointing out the ableism within hollywood by not giving as much credit to actors who don't depict a charming and more presentable version of the disabled.

but it also doesn't always feel like the movie's really sticking up for those people i guess

It definitely does, but it doesn't do it in the same way or as strongly as they do with the blackface issue. There isn't anyone actually onscreen presenting the point of view of people who are harmed, the way Alpa Chino's character serves as a foil to Kirk Lazarus being in blackface. There's also a sort of unspoken implication that the stories of the intellectually disabled aren't actually worth tellingthat actors only take these roles and Hollywood only produces these properties for cynical, self-serving reasons. And that implication isn't ever really challenged within the script the way the blackface stuff is.
