Is. A.I. art art?

https://twitter.com/clarkesworld/status/1627711728245960704

Yikes. I see a lot of people in different industries going through this. And there's literally nothing that can be done.

Here's another one where some guy won a Destiny art contest with A.I. generated work.

https://twitter.com/destinytrack/status/1621943914897833984

Oof.

Do you agree with the disgruntled artists in the comments?

Is A.I. art really not art in any sense?

Discuss.

Wouldn't the AI short stories be terrible anyway? Just reject them with the rest of the crap. I don't see why they need to verify which garbage is human garbage and which is AI garbage.

Why wouldn't it be art?

It's usually shit and made of stolen material, but those things don't necessarily make something not art.

An AI can make art, but it isn't an artist because it can't think like we do. It's not spontaneously making art for art's sake, but making art when told to make art. When it starts doing it of its own volition without ever being prompted, maybe then we can call it an artist.

In a few years everyone is going to just see A.I. art as another tool in the artist toolbox. The tech has already seen a bunch of significant advances since it went big last year that gives the user significantly more control of the output. ControlNet was recently added to Stable Diffusion, and it's crazy what you can do with it.

A.I. art should be in a separate category than fully human-made art for contests like this. It's like trying to compare a video game speedrun using glitches and sequence skips to a glitchless speedrun. They're a separate type of work requiring a separate set of skills.

At a certain point you're not going to be able to distinguish the difference though

Then require the inclusion of proof that a human created it from scratch, things that an artwork generated by an AI wouldn't have. Copies of sketches from before the work was finished, a timelapse video of the initial drawing, etc.

For there to be art there has to be human (or at least sentient) expression, so it depends on what the final piece actually is.

If you just type in some words in a prompt and call the machine output "art", Id disagree with that assertion.

If the human uses machine-generated images as a basis for another work, I'd say that's art.

Ie, that comic book that was recently denied copyright protection I would say is perfectly valid art. The images themselves are machine-generated, but the author still had to script a story and arrange the images in a way that encapsulated the intent expression. (Mechanically Id say its in line, creatively, with using existing toys and figures to make a stop motion video)

Is deciding what to type in the prompt, tuning settings and values, iterating on the result, and filtering the good outputs from the bad outputs not a form of expression?

If there was no expression, then everyone would create identical AI art, which is clearly not the case

And this is part of the problem, any sort of ban on this stuff is inevitably going to raise the barriers for entry for some people to have to deal with in ways that suck.

I wish people would stop calling ai art stolen.
its certainly not stealing or using parts of other pictures. And anyone who thinks its using parts dont know how generative ai works.

I dont really care about the argument of it being real art or not. Its certainly takes significantly less skill to produce ai art outside of the original development of the software.

currently a lot of ai art is distinguishable but that will change so the sooner people accept that the better

This is just an image search with extra steps.

I cant type "cthulu big tits anime girl striped panties" into google, put in a few crtieria in the advanced settings, then go through all the pre-existing art to pick out a favorite and say I had anything to do with its creation beyond just looking for what was already there.

I can kinda see what you're getting at but I'm not quite sure I'd say this, since you are very obviously creating artwork that doesn't exist yet. Like, that's the whole point. You are not looking for a thing that is already there and there is no amount of image searching that would get you back the things you make because they literally aren't out there to be found

I definitely would never use the terms drawing, painting, etc to describe the creation of AI-generated art. I don't think I would call the people who make it "artists", either. And I agree that there is probably not much expression going on from the people who type in "a muskrat with elon musk's face", laugh a little about the outputs, and then move on. But the people who actually put effort into creating individual specific images with a composition, subject, style, etc that they planned out in their mind what they were looking for and then used the AI to render it as an image... I don't know how you can't say there's some level of self-expression there
