Some of the perpetually online people need to learn that lesson.There are obviously special cases of constant, targeted harassment beyond just simply internet ugliness, but the majority of people can just fucking block, log off, and move on.

I never really understood people acting as if people in the past were less hurt by words. People in the past have killed due to words that hurt their honor, but people these days are the emotional ones .
They've horribly discriminated due to people of different races and ethnicity. But they're the ones with strong emotional abilities

It is about name calling. The saying is from the 1800s meant to teach kids that just because someone says you have cooties does not mean you really have cooties. Its as simple as that.

If someone was perfectly disciplined, words would have as much power over us as we let them.

And I do try to be that way, but we know in real life it doesn't always work that way. When my fiancee told me she was going to leave me, it hurt worse than when I was stabbed.

So I guess the lesson is to try your best to not let things get to you.

Be that politicians, comedians, musicians and so on.

Words have been the catalyst of conflict since humanity first developed speech. Words matter a great big fucking deal, and often the most to those who insist otherwise.

It's not a universal statement. Some people are better at shrugging off insults than others. I definitely agree that people generally have thinner skin these days.

It's also founded on outdated perceptions of strength of will. The idea that physical pain is all that should hurt you, and emotional pain is for sissies.
