I really enjoyed the books as a kid. The JKR stuff aside, this game hadnt really been on my radar since story wise I assume its pretty removed from the original series.

How is it as a game so far? Good? Bad? Mid?

I'd give it like a 7.9, maybe a really cautious 8 out of 10.

There are some minor annoyances and it can feel a bit slow or annoying here and there for the first 5-10 hours. Overall it's great as someone who never cared much for Harry Potter.

If you love Harry Potter this is probably goty material

Loving it so far. I've played 6-7 hours and I don't think I'm even far into the story. Hogwarts is huge, and it feels satisfying to explore and find things. I'm think I'm gonna have to force myself to do more story stuff so I can get more spells to explore even more.

In regards to the start, you'll be doing yourself a favor if you resist the urge to rush out into the open world. Attend your early classes, do the side assignments given by the professors, get the various spells and abilities mostly unlocked. The same goes for the grounds of Hogwarts itself. The place has all sorts of nooks and crannies to explore, but you'll need spells to solve a lot of the puzzles placed around.

That being said, it can be worth doing the first tier or two of various challenges early when able in order to unlock things. I.e. inventory space is limited at the start, so do a few of Merlin's Trials after being introduced to them to unlock the first tier or two of upgrades for it.

Im glad to hear that. I loved the series but that wouldnt be the reason why I buy the game, I actually expected it to be meh honestly.

For those of you who played, in particular how is the gear system? Are there defense attributes and skill bonuses? Do you upgrade wands? Do you upgrade spells at all? If thats fairly well done I might take the plunge on PS5.

it's ok so far. about 5 hours in

The good: The atmosphere, attention to detail, soundtrack, and everything about Hogwarts itself is incredible. It's absolutely spot on. Aesthetically, it's the best I've ever seen Hogwarts look, and being able to go wherever you want is great. Story has me interested so far. The world map looks fucking huge too, yet I feel like I've only been through about 66% of hogwarts at this point. The scale feels astronomical, but I feel like I start every open world game thinking that. There's a chance it is still big but just empty, like a lot of these games suffer from. We'll see.

The bad: Collecting "Field guide pages" feels like korok seeds 2.0 but less rewarding. Very uncreative. Tons of repeat puzzles already (butterfly mirrors, the two rolling ball sphere things, etc.). And with most of these games, once the awe of the atmosphere wears off, I feel like it's just another "pick waypoint --> follow yellow path there --> do thing" game just waiting to happen. EDIT: Also as has been said, having a full inventory already and still being in the baby starting area is not a good sign.

All of this is subject to change since I can't really leave hogwarts/hogsmede yet, but we'll see.

I have about 3 hours into the game so far. If you care it all about that world and being a part of it the game is great. It definitely has some of the trappings of open world games that I think a lot of people are kind of tired of. I wish that the rewards for exploration and whatnot we're more interesting. But that being said I feel that the main story so far has been really good I like a lot of the characters involved and it feels like a Harry Potter story? Like this could have been a film and I think it would have made a pretty good film.

I talked to a dev on Discord and he admitted that Covid ultimately was the reason they were able to delay the game so they can fix all the game breaking glitches and bugs in the game, since apparently bug fixes are hard to do when everyone was working at home.

It's pretty well done. Gear can drop with traits on them when you get to a certain point. It increases stuff like damage from certainties of spells etc. No wand upgrades but you can customize the handle. There's a talent tree you get from doing the story and it upgrades spells, stealth, and a few other things.

I have only seen 1 HP movie so I am not connected to the franchise at all.

I am 17 hours in and having a blast. I thought I would hate the combat, but it is a lot of fun. Some of the dialogue drags on way too long for my taste, but maybe it's just because I don't give a shit about HP.

There is plenty to do, tons of side stuff to take a break from main missions.

There are glitches, but it's not terrible. I didn't have the game get an error once, but it wasn't that bad. It autosaves pretty frequently.

My biggest gripe is gear inventory. A mild explorer will fill up fast without warning. You have 6 types of attire and 20 slots at the beginning. Minor exploration fills those up and you are forced to sell them right away. I wish they had a storage box in your common area to put gear.

Yeah, if you are the sort to explore the castle you'll fill up at the start of the game and be forced to destroy stuff. Until/if the devs add more space it's best to limit early game exploration before reaching Hogsmeade and then get into the habit of teleporting back to town often to sell stuff. You'll want the gold anyway to purchase all the top end crafting stuff for the Room of Requirement.

I'm personally not gonna call it GOTY material after 2 days, but my only gripes with the game are your starting inventory space which has been mentioned multiple times, and the kinda janky aerial controls which probably get better as you upgrade your broom. So far it's definitely been worth the full price purchase.

I've only played for about 4 hours. It's very enjoyable thus far. You really get that sense of wonder and scale from the franchise. I haven't encountered any serious issues, though I did see a quest giver get stuck on the stairs as I was following her (I just walked back up, she turned to wait which freed her, and we resumed without further issue). I wish I had more time to play it, that's for sure.

I dont have it, but I hear it has a problem with the inventory system being too small. I hear you can only carry like 20 items, and things get dropped like crazy. Supposedly you can increase the inventory later, but it sounds like a pain early on.

This biggest issue I encountered was falling through the map once. Unlike other games there isn't a death wall under the map, so you eventually 'land' but are still unable to open the menu, essentially soft locking the game.

Considering that the devs have position-reset pits already implemented in some of the puzzle areas they should just add that to the bottom of the grey void beneath the levels.

Also broom riding sucks for exploration. If you are looking for something in the air you cannot look up and around. You can only look left and right or move up and down.

I encountered a glitch in a quest where I was in a house. After the cutscene I was outside of the house (all part of the quest). I had to go back in to talk to a character. The prompt to open the door was not there.

Still having a ton of fun exploring. I have been just flying around finding quests for later. Not GOTY, but still a lot of fun
