Same person who would spend $200 for one of those reproduction Pokemon games.
My guess it was a content creator or a very, very uninformed person.

People spent money on NFTs because they were unethically fleeched by celebrities and influencers. There was a good documentary on this recently.

Was there any other way it could have ended?

I thought it would've been cool if game items were NFTs you could sell after farming but there's just no scenario where that doesn't end up crashing in flames when real money gets involved

No, because Cryptocurrency was created as a money laundering scheme and vector for scamming people. It's always been like this.

They aren't as dumb as the morons that were buying sealed graded video games for in some cases $1 million or more. Those things have tumbled in price by a huge magnitude in less than a year.

Easiest way to turn $1 million into $250k without spending any of it on fun things or useful things.

I haven't even bought a video game for years. I've never even spent that much money on a game either.

I think society really is diseases and civilization really is collapsing because people are evil.

That turned Pat the NES Punk's podcast into a 'watch as these morons burn their money' show. Quite good fun

This was revealed to be a scam. The person buying knew the person selling. It worked in a similar way to NFT inflation did.
Look into Karl Jobst's videos on the subject.

There's a couple circles of people doing this, I forgot the name of one of them, but I was reading that they have just been scooping up total shovelware games en masse just to dry out the market lmao

To be fair, it makes sense. When a game stops production, the prices go up over time. Now that the DS and it's games have been out of production for over 8 years, the prices have gone up drastically.

Well despite the retro sealed/graded video game market collapsing, many retro games have increased in value over the past few years. Gamecube games are worth a good chunk of change these days, especially titles that did not sell very well but were good games.

Looking at even a game that sold very well like Twilight Princess on Gamecube it recently sold CIB for $132.50 on Ebay.

Hmm, I had no issues getting my hands on one when it came out.

*Shrug*

I don't remember some massive issues of people talking about having trouble securing their GC copy, keep in mind this was also in the era before games could be bought digitally on console. So you either found one in the store, had one shipped to you, or you never played it. Maybe it was underproduced but again I was there and I don't remember people bitching about having trouble getting one.
