My close friend was impacted as a recruiting manager. I just called her and shes in tears. She loved her job so much. Freaking awful.

So who all in tech has had mass layoffs in the last few months? Google, Microsoft, Salesforce all off the top of my head. Amazon too I think, yeah?

The rich do layoffs because it frees a bunch of cash.

All the checks they would have paid those employees in the next 2 weeks is now on their books to use as they please.

And the rate to borrow cash is high at the moment meaning they can make profit with free cash.

The severance is amazing. But its still worrisome because of how many have been let go so close together and how few other companies are hiring. Recruiters have been hit the heaviest. I saw a job posting for a Tech Recruiter that had 7k applicants in a week.

The layoff move from Google on Friday comes after CNBC reported Wednesday that the firm was deferring a portion of employees' year-end bonus checks until March or April instead of paying them in full in January.

So they get their bonus or not?

Delayed till April after they fired?

okay I don't get it.

How does this do anything for google?
They are basically paying a lot of these people as if they were still working there for 4 more months....

  • We'll pay employees during the full notification period (minimum 60 days).
  • We'll also offer a severance package starting at 16 weeks salary plus two weeks for every additional year at Google, and accelerate at least 16 weeks of GSU vesting.
  • We'll pay 2022 bonuses and remaining vacation time.
  • We'll be offering 6 months of healthcare, job placement services, and immigration support for those affected.
  • Outside the US, we'll support employees in line with local practices.
By the time they no longer paying Economy may be up again and they just lost valuable employees they haven't been getting value from because they laid them off.

Makes me feel really nervous that this will happen to me too. I work in tech. My company already had layoffs but many companies are having second rounds lately. I was hired last month because they wanted someone with specific experience in certain tech that is niche that I have. They had over two thousand applicants and I only had a foot in because I knew people on the team. But whos to say what were working on wont get canceled.

TBH I got lucky. I've looked at state and federal level with the same position as mine and the pay isn't better. The benefits are insane. I get sick days, personal days and vacation days all can be used separately and I get all national holidays off. Health care is fucking awesome and I don't pay into social security. Instead I pay into a State pension for my retirement and I can retire after 30 years of working and I will keep 90-100% of what I was getting paid when I retire, and then I can go do anything else I want. Government is like a tenured job with stability. My QoL has improved greatly.

I say yes to it because I'd pretty much have to commit a felony or not work for like 3 months straight to actually get fired after getting my foot in the door. And after a certain salary threshold it's no longer a rat race for me.

Work not being a source of stress in your life is a super underrated benefit, definitely worth making ~70-90% of what my friends in the private sector make. Coincidentally, I'm the only one in that friend group that hasn't hopped jobs every 2 years or has had a panic attack over work.

Oh yeah and if pensions still exist by the time I retire I'm just coasting on free money in addition to whatever I had in retirement until I'm in the ground
