care and empathy of course, I however don't think losing a job is nearly as bad as getting announced you have stage 4 cancer, but maybe I've been too desensitized to money because of my career path, I'm used to rollercoasters, big rollercoasters

You clearly understand very little.

Were at over 100k employees in tech that have been laid off in the last 3 months. Over 50k in January alone and the month isnt over. They are not useless people. I know several who have been impacted and they are some of the hardest working people I know. They just no longer serve a purpose to the company they were at. My friend who was laid off had full weeks every week and would work late hours all the time. She gave her heart and soul to Google. But whatever team she was on was deemed to not generate enough revenue. She was just a number on a spreadsheet. Her boss didnt even know she was getting laid off and called her crying because she was a top performer.
'Useless', was a mean word for describing them I admit. But that's what they were and why they were laid off at the end of the day.

It's sucks but regardless of their quality and work ethic most were only hired because of the bubble and the techs industry's insane growth and profits at the time.

And like all good times nobody wants to see or admit they will ever end.

this shit is laughable. If you dont give a company your heart and soul youre half assing it and deserve to get fired.

if you do, youre not too smart and deserve it too.

The fact of the matter is that corporations do not view their employees as people.

They are merely tools for them. That's why they can push for infinite growth and fire hundreds of thousands of people as quickly as they hire them.

"You work hard and want to stay employed? Tough shit. You're cutting into our profit margins. And nothing will happen to us because half the cattle will shame you for being stupid enough to work for us. But if you stop wanting to work for us? Well that just proves everyone is too lazy and entitled to work an honest job!"

That's why I am glad I don't work for a big company.

Benefits may be better than the small company I work for, but ultimately layoffs can unexpectedly wipe out good people.

Yes, layoffs often get rid of lower performing employees and trim fat, but often they get rid of great workers as well. It's sad and it's only going to get worse IMO.

I don't think they're evil really I just think they really messed up big time with the recent overhiring

tech work, overall, has a very long ramp up time before new hires are useful. and they're also paying a significant amount of severence to everyone. AND they're getting awful publicity out of it. so it's not like they're getting off particularly great here either. it seems absurd to suggest that getting rid of this many people at once like that was part of some master plan when I think it's far more likely it's the result of a plan (if there even was one) going extremely wrong

No, they are definitely evil. These corporations aren't that incompetent, just completely void of morals. They know this growth is unsustainable, that mass firings would be necessary. Not a single employee matters to them. We're all just dehumanized statistics. We don't have families or needs or feelings. Are we helping or hurting profits?

15 year old me would have been naive enough to give these companies the benefit of the doubt. The years have hardened me. You are not viewed as a person by these companies.

I will only work for small businesses for the rest of my life. I'd rather be unemployed and homeless than give one more day of my life to a company that doesn't value me as a human being.

ok what exactly do you think they are gaining by going through a long and complex hiring and onboarding process only to fire a bunch of people shortly afterward? In what way does this benefit the big tech company

you take advantage of an unprecedented growth opportunity (pandemic, which drove the use and adoption of technology in ways no one could have dreamed of) and then get rid of the dead weight and cost (employees, humans) once things normalize (see, not recession I mean plain going back to normal).

It's more like they hire everyone, put them all on separate projects, see what shit sticks to the wall, then fire the rest.

I mean this situation obviously sucks and how they handled it but at the same time for a company that doesn't care about their employees, Google employees have a better life than 90% of other jobs. All you can eat gourmet food every day, tons of money, stocks, huge bonuses, etc, for relatively interesting jobs.

Businesses should find new things to work on if a certain product isn't wanted anymore. The only legitimate excuse for layoffs is if the company is otherwise losing money which isn't something that's happening if you throw a private Sting concert for your executives.

Companies making millions or billions in profit per year should not be mass firing regularly to "save money".

If your company isn't underwater, you should not be firing without cause.

The messed up part about Google, Amazon, Microsoft and pretty most big corporations is they get so much subsidies and tax writes offs from the government, the argument is "well these companies employee so many people!", then everyone forgets about all that when they do massive layoffs.
