...I've only ever seen field work uses to describe doing stuff like going to do work or studies in places outside of academic settings. Like for anthropologists, actually collecting data from people directly. Or for certain science fields, gathering specimens. Etc.

That's how it is used everywhere by everyone. This university is claiming it's racist because "field work" sounds like "cotton picking" to them.

Unfortunately, because the word "practicum" is derived from Latin it was felt that this replacement was too Eurocentric and therefore exclusionary, and the team has now gone back to the drawing board.

These are the same types of people arguing that Git needs to change it's master/branch terminology because the word master, even in that context, is apparently racist. It's about finding something to be upset over.

it's not, and this institution acting like it is and changing it to something else is just them trying to project the image that they care and are progressive or whatever, in the most low effort way possible that doesn't require them to spend any money or effort

Words can have different meanings and they evolve over time.

Society has gotten worse in this regard; I don't think anyone ever made that connection until that statement in the OP.

I find it most embarrassing where one group of people get offended on behalf of another group of people, like just stop it, the other group doesn't give a fuck what you think, "we aren't offended by it."

I agree with not wanting to cause offence but if it hasn't been an issue then shut up and leave things alone.

Field work means a lot of things.

Agriculture.
Land-scaping.
Trying to restore natural habitats.
Development.

Doing physical activities in a scientific setting such as paleontology, archeology, wildlife photography, cataloguing eco systems, studying disaster prone areas etc.

Field of work can mean a very specific type of work within a broad profession. Example: All doctors are medical practitioners, but some specialize in treating heart issues, while others specialize in pregnancy and childbirth care.

No, farmers work fields.

Some of these are taking language, and their origins, to an extreme.

Some the most recent examples make sense. Like saying "Main Bedroom" instead of "Master Bedroom" because of slave connotations attached to "Master Bedroom" or saying someone is a "Legacy" instead of being "Grandfathered In", as many people are "Grandfathered In" because of a female family member's accomplishments.

Phrases, and their meanings, can change and evolve over time. Consider the fact that we're only 60ish years from asking someone to "Jew down" their price on something being a common phrase.
