Early Route Rodent Pokemon: Much less beloved than the birds, and it's easy to see why. They aren't useful at all in a fight, so their main value to a player is if they can be HM slaves. But not only were HM slaves eventually phased out, the only one that was even good at that role was Bibarel. They're always brown, they're designed to be boring, they don't have the useful ground immunity that their flying cousins have, and their REAL purpose in the game is just to provide you with easy enemies to take down as you adventure, both in the wild and in the ownership of evil Teams. They're just enemy filler, is what I'm getting at. For our purposes, I'll be including Raticate, Furret, Sentret, Bibarel, Watchog, Diggersby, Gumshoos, Greedent, and Oinkologne.

Raticate: Even as a kid, I hated Raticate. It's so ugly and weak-looking. That's the point! The point is for Raticate to be thrown out five-hundred times by Team Rocket members and for you to one-shot it with your Kadabra, I get it. It is designed to be unmemorable and gross, a perfect a low-level bad guy pokemon. Has a single one of these things ever been the ace pokemon of a named trainer? I can't think of one. Raticate, unfortunately, is actually useful, because it gets super fang and hyper fang, which have value in in-game gimmick runs like nuzlockes, but even with them, it's still useless competitively. So, it's like, yes, Raticate and its ilk are bad, but they are purposefully bad. They have a specific reason for being so bad that we all just need to accept and move on from.

Oinkologne: No one cares about Oinkologne at all, and no one ever will. Doesn't even get the standard Super and Hyper Fang, and it's not even a rodent. It's doing the 'gendered differences' thing like twelve years after Unfezant did, and Unfezant was like the worst bird! This is no one's favorite pokemon.

Normal Red actually uses Snorlax; Charizard Red is his Sygna Suit (it's a thing in this game where the trainers dress in clothes resembling their Pokemon to feel closer to them, as an easy excuse for a new gacha costume/Pokemon for the same trainer). Sygna Suit Blue uses Blastoise and SS Leaf has Venusaur (her normal partner is Eevee). There's also "classic" costumes for Red and Blue where Red uses Pikachu and Blue has Aerodactyl.

As a nomination, let's go with Kris.

Ditto: Cool idea, cool ability that finally made it useful... but that's not what this is about, is it? The world must just be full of secret Dittos for some of these male-only pokemon to keep up their numbers. Why they didn't make a Tyrogue for Tauros and Miltank, or why they specifically decided the egg always belongs to the mother's species unless it's a Ditto, is beyond me, but it makes Ditto the secret most important competitive pokemon of all time.

Competitive Pokemon: You might have thought I would make fun of this, but I love it. I don't play and haven't played in years, and only played as a joke team even then, but I follow it. It's a fun little e-sport in its own way. Like, I would say that the appeal of Pokemon falls into three categories, those being cool animals, JRPG stuff, and competitive play, and this is actually the most complex of them. I guess it's sort of like way more complicated chess? But the best feeling you can have in Pokemon is predicting an opponent's attack, switching out, and annihilating them.

Whitney's Miltank: I don't mean to brag, but I didn't have much difficulty with this as a kid. It's interesting that Miltank of all things became a huge filter for kids, though. You're just playing normally and then the third gym shoves its boot up your ass with milk drinks and rollouts. Lt. Surge has nothing on this.

GS Ball: The mystery surrounding the GS Ball is really cool. It's masterfully built up, and the fact that it's the only "special" pokeball in the franchise makes it that much more interesting. I know that they planned to have it house Celebi before changing their mind and turning that into a movie, so the ultimate fate of the GS Ball (Ash gives it to a guy and never mentions it again) is a huge disappointment, but it's probably better this way. You just know that if they'd actually opened it, it would contain some boring lesser legendary like Entei.

Vivillon: The best early bug, I think. I certainly can't think of who compete. Not to imply that it's particularly good, it's basically just Butterfree 2, but it at least has a much cooler gimmick than any of the other early bugs, so I'll allow it. At one point, I wanted to collect them all, but I gave up after realizing it would be too much effort.

I get the fun of this creepy unexplained mysterious ghost event happening, but the fact that it's intentional makes it less special than the hideous Lavender Town music, or Missingno.'s glitchy monstrosity. Honestly that's why I nominated it, because I did take the time to get a complete Vivillon collection. There's a subreddit (or at least there was) for people to trade them, and it was a pretty fun time gathering them and getting spares of ones from other regions in case I needed to trade them. (My native pattern is Polar BTW)

Smogon: You might think I'd be contemptuous of Smogon, and it's true that it has a lot of lol rulings. However, Smogon is trying to do something noble, which is to turn a game that doesn't care about balance (singles) into one that does. Why is that worse than the Smash Bros competitive scene? I'm fine with Smogon, even if it does get silly sometimes. When I played in gen 5, it took them forever to ban Genesect to ubers, which was an insane decision, it should have been banned immediately.

Pokken Tournament: I'm more lenient toward this spinoff than most, just because a Pokemon fighting game makes so much more sense than a gacha or MOBA. That said, let's check out the available fighters. Pikachu, Lucario, Charizard, Mewtwo, Blastoise, yes expected. Suicune, Gengar, Weavile? Croagunk? Decidueye? Little more interesting. Aegislash, huh? Braixen? Honestly, these are only middlingly weird ones. I'm not seeing any Mantines or Delcatties or Furfrous here. I see that instead of gym leaders, the game has "League Masters," how vague and weird.

Aside from gen 1, the only gym leaders I remembered looking at the Bulbapedia page are Falkner, Whitney, Jasmine, Pryce, Clair, Norman, Tate and Liza, Wallace/Juan, Fantina, Cilan, Lenora, Elesa, Drayden/Iris, Valerie, Opal, and the Paldean ones. Safari Zone: The idea of a zone where you can catch rare pokemon is good, but it's always such a pain in the ass. I remember as a kid, I was the literal only kid in my school to catch a Tauros. It took me months to finish the pokedex because no one with Red could catch a Scyther.

Pokemon Smile: I watched the youtube video advertising this app. Look, here's the thing. There is nothing fun about brushing your teeth. It is at best a really neutral experience, and more likely an unpleasant one. The nice minty smell afterward can be okay, but that's the best you can say about it. So, trying to play it up by adding pokemon into the mix is a doomed endeavor. People talk about how Sonic tries weird things with its brand, but Pokemon is just about as weird.
