Even after they finally got one, they had to switch it to "pulse" in order to work because the line couldn't process the tones, only the clicks. The one that really blows my mind though is that my mom had an adapter for one of our phones that replaced the mouth piece and generated tones, because her bank had a bank by phone option but it only supported touch tone phones.
