I was actually surprised a couple years ago by a little kid playing with a phone at the airport while I was picking someone up. He was young so I was surprised that he actually recognized it as being a phone.

To be fair, they still sell these:

...and I lump it in to my category of "Things Every Child Should Be Mandatorily Issued at Birth". Along with this:

I've basically given those to all my friends' kids for their first couple of birthdays.

Pretty sure we never had a rotary phone, and I was born in 88

I had a rotary phone, and it was a nice one with a pearl receiver;

Is YOUR smartphone made of exotic non-plastics?

Did it look like this?

My grandparents had one like that. Because their phone line literally couldn't handle a touch-tone phone. Even after they finally got one, they had to switch it to "pulse" in order to work because the line couldn't process the tones, only the clicks.

And that was in the 80s/early 90s.

Yeah, I remember having to do that as a kid. The one that really blows my mind though is that my mom had an adapter for one of our phones that replaced the mouth piece and generated tones, because her bank had a bank by phone option but it only supported touch tone phones. That was like the early to mid 80's and ATM's weren't even common yet so that was just outright wizardry.

I think I've used a rotary phone before, but I can't remember if I actually have, or if I'm just remembering seeing them in TV/movies.

What?
Landline phones haven't been common place for over a decade and Rotary phones aren't even functional on US lines anymore because they cannot handle digital signals.

I saw one for sale the last time I went into John Lewis, although I think its largely as a retro gimmick.

I've also seen them for sale, but very much as a retro thing. I'm sure it was perfectly functional (though presumably with a digital approximation of the mechanism rather than a faithful recreation), but I expect it's overwhelmingly meant to be an aesthetic thing and not a useful one.
