Keep in mind that despite being a fantasy setting you still get guns, so the main gameplay is shoot things collect loot. Spells and abilities are fleshed out a bit more than in most Borderlands games though. A big factor is also how much you think Tiny Tina is a good character, a lot of people find her annoying as fuck and she is a huge part of this. Outside of that, there's some beautiful set pieces and a couple of awesome cutscenes that might be worth it for you if you enjoy the BL franchise. Sadly the random encounters have these amazing massive maps, but you'll only ever play in one corner of them. It seems like they had some plans to use that space but then just gave up on it.
