Bubble Bobble

that just makes me sad because there's no game that truly captures the Bubble Bobble experience... it has everything! It's easy to start, hard to master, you can target farm items by risking using up too much time, scoring mechanics are super satisfying

I mean, scoring mechanics like that pretty much only survive in a select few shmups these days, certainly no platformers or even beat'em ups.

....

I guess I'll recommend Xotic, but it's a loooooooooooooooooooooong stretch.

Also arousing.

I doubt you can find anything like this. Been searching forever and nothing is it.

A game that is turn based, build armies, multiple locations like space, moon, and earth.

Last game is SD Gundam G-next for the SNES.

They have other Gundam turn based strategy games but its all just tactical. No building units or anything like that.

cuz there's lots that goes into what a game considers part of the story; there's the plot, events, world building, pacing and such... it's not all just the narrative

A compelling narrative adventure with robust character creation, meaningful choices, and an epic well-written story.

Like a better Mass Effect.

But it also has to be available on the PS4 and not PC. Never PC.

well, the only thing I can think of it MAYBE Days Gone... character creation and choices are kinda opposites. Then again, Commander Shepard never has to emote ever. I don't tend to play story based games and I don't even know what you want from a story.

So... Geneforge. but 20 year old Mac/PC titles likely aren't on the PS4. You'd probably like Wildermyth or I was a Teenage Exocolonist, but the PS4 has, like, 2 games on it.

No idea.. I haven't seen ANYTHING with customizable robots outside of PvP games (like RoboCraft) in well over 30 years.

There is a new Front Mission and Armoured Core game coming up... so, maybe?

Not necessarily - they can also be synergistic. Freedom to create and design a character allows you to shape in your own mind exactly who you want that character to be, what their personality is, and what sort of decisions they'd make. Then as you play the persona you created for yourself can influence which options you pick as you go, shaping different paths through the story.

I'd say games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Fallout: New Vegas all handle it extremely well.

The real problem is that the companies who used to do it really, really well basically became twisted shadows of themselves and now mostly only produce garbage. So there aren't any games like that really coming out anymore.

Greedfall wanted to be that... but it kind of fell short. Outer Worlds claimed to be that... but was mostly mediocre dreck. Cyberpunk 2077 could have been that... but it was an apocalyptic dumpster fire.

Honestly, at this point what I really kind of want is something like "Witcher 4" - except instead of Geralt as a main character, they let you make your own gender-indeterminate custom Witcher with a personalty and backstory you completely design for yourself. That would be awesome.

Lokarin posted...
You'd probably like Wildermyth

I kind of like the premise of it. But the procedural generation rather than pre-written storylines means it can meander a bit, and no individual storyline is ever all that impactful. So it's not quite what I want out of a game.

I really enjoyed some of the Telltale games before they self-destructed, but the problem there was that they relied so heavily on pre-established characters that you can sort of feel locked into a path (the same problem I had with games like Fallout 3 and Witcher 3). It's the opposite problem of Wildermyth - writers so enamored of their own story they refuse to really let you deviate from it.

The ideal is somewhere between the two - where you can shape your own character, but also make meaningful choices.

This is the passion of gaming I like to see

I can't really think of much to go on, since many people consider Mass Effect/Dragon Age/Witcher 3 to already be the peak of the genre

I do like the threading narrative of Detroit: Become Human, and there's the personality customization in games like Suzerain or Crusader Kings, but none of them have gameplay to go alongside their events

You know what? I'd like to know if this exists:

A game with a pretty small open world like the Yakuza games that nails story focused side content like Yakuza...that isn't made or published by sega or whatever the lead dev of most of the yakuza games name is. Yeah, I know about FOTNS, but what else is out there? Bonus points if it's a game developed outside of an asian country.

Yakuza is a hugely popular, why has no one else been inspired by them? It'd be like if there were no games inspired by Skyrim, the 3d Fallouts, or The Witcher 3.

Hell, there's like half a dozen good games inspired by both Fallout 1 and 2, and half a dozen good games inspired by Baldur's Gate 2, but no game dev was heavily inspired by Yakuza? What gives?

My one of my favorite games of all time and the basis of my request. I was hoping to see if Lok could recommend me a game similar to this. I've tried many times to play this on PC and always get softlocked at a point and the workaround for the softlock has never worked for me. Thanks anyways though. =)
