Not sure how hot of a take this is, but the first ten chapters of FE7 are the best part. I wish Lyn and her squad had been the main focus the whole way through.

I...think I agree with this, if we're talking about story only. Sometimes I dislike Lyn because she tends to get Strength-screwed and she's such a whatever character in Eliwood/Hector story. But then I go through Lyn story again and remember how enjoyable that story and squad is.

I'm a major Eliwood fan. I think it's hilarious how his growths are so middling. He's great. Looking back, I guess I do enjoy most of the FE lords minus Eirika/Corrin/Byleth. I don't love them, but I rarely hate them. Robin's a gold standard for avatar characters and I wish they went back to that model.

I kinda remember my first ever FE run and it was certainly...special. I remember Uhai completely destroyed me. I definitely did not get the gaiden chapter afterwards, which was weird because I got the 2nd Kishuna gaiden chapter and was completely confused about what was going on. I also got the Lords under 50 version of the map and that was awful. I think I just barely survived the final chapter.

Yeah it's night and day for me. I think it's the puke green. With Peri's hair it's in the Ibuki Mioda zone. Plus as you said it doesn't fit with the game.

That....was a VERY sad defend map. I killed almost ever unit on turn 1 and could have killed the boss on turn 2 other than wanting to finish the recruitment and chests. Completely effortless. The first defend map of PoR was harder and that was basically a tutorial!

Obviously I don't need Isadora here, but wonder if she'll be viable enough for the Hector run? I usually try to go one self promoted/one prepromoted paladin for runs in FE games just due to the weapon rank economy being so harsh on them.

You can use any unit for normal modes just fine.

Isadora's solid enough, though her durability is a little suspect on higher difficulties. They really wanted you to use the angelic robe that she starts with on her.

Isadora will be fine on anything except maybe Hector Hard Mode, though it's questionable whether she has anything on Marcus. If he's still alive and/or you have any other promoted paladin she feels pretty extraneous

Obviously it's not relevant from the era of 3d models moving forward, but I'm surprised this is the only game, that ai can recall, to have cutaways like this. I don't think FE8 had them?

FE8 had a handful of cutaways. There was one of the Gerik Mercs and one of Knoll and Lyon researching together, for instance.

... come to think of it maybe they only showed in the credits? I'm not positive they're actually used in the main game.

The Tellius games had some for big moments but they were in a different style.

Florina is a good choice, yeah. Really, any women unit you plan on using or Eliwood, because Durandal is really heavy for some reason.

The real answer is a guy you get much later, though you do get a second Body Ring before then, and he doesn't need them both outside of HHM.

I did, prepping now. I looked up the unlock afterwards thinking it must have just been saving Pent or recruiting Hawkeye or something, and WOW is it a good thing I decided to grind out a bunch of Ninian levels this chapter.

Yeah both versions of that chapter are some of the tougher chapters in the game

The door thing is for the other version of the map. I also think only a few of the promoted enemies count, but that might only be on Hector mode because of different mode weirdness.

Kenneth sucks because he can randomly crit you. Somehow the Assassin boss is the one that doesn't do random crits.

It's kinda phrased badly on Serene's Forest. If you're doing Jerme's chapter, the requirement is doors. If you're doing Kenneth's chapter, the requirement is promoted enemies.

So go ahead and kill 2/3 of the promoted enemies.

That map made me restart my first playthrough. I abused the hell outta Marcus and no one else was strong enough to survive Harken and his Brave Sword. I was much more careful in training my units the next go around.

You didn't just recruit Harken with Marcus?

On Pale Flower of Darkness Kenneth, ENM, there are three promoted casters: a Sage north of your start, a Druid up in the corner, and a (generic) Bishop in the building. Karel turns up if you've killed at least two of them, Harken if you haven't.

On other routes and difficulties, the three promoted enemies that matter are the three standing where that Sage, Druid, and Bishop were. Again, kill two or more to get Karel.

If I recall, my lords were so under leveled that the only viable strategy was to create a bottleneck so to not be overwhelmed. Except on the enemy phase Marcus or Wallace would defeat an enemy and Harken would stroll in and stomp. Enemies swarm after that, game over. 13 year old me was not a great strategist that first playthrough lol

FE7 in specific feels like they poorly balanced the early game units versus the later game units. It's kind of lame when someone you recruit in Chapter 20 is immediately far superior to someone you've been raising with care for most of the game.

I don't get the concern over Pale Flower of Darkness Kenneth Edition, it's a pretty easy map. Kenneth's crit rate with Aura is potentially annoying but it's pretty easy to just swoop in on him while he still has Purge equipped and nuke him. Purge is easy to bait safely, his crit rate isn't super high with it and you probably have at least one unit on the team somewhere that can take a crit anyway with a Pure Water/Barrier boost. The Jerme version *is* obnoxious though thanks to the doors hiding what's inside and FE7's dumbest enemy type the Luna Druid making an appearance.

Even I knew going in that the "Desert Trio" was one of the most busted back to back prepromote recruits you could pull in an FE late game (and counting Geitz here who's tearing ASS, that's 4 units in just a few chapters)

Eh, you get plenty of good units relatively early like Kent/Sain/Lowen (and Marcus obviously), Raven not that much later, all of Erk/Canas/Lucius are viable, the first two pegasus knights. The mid to late game recruits are pretty good, but it's not too crazy (there's nothing like hard mode Milady and Perceval in FE7, even Harken with his obscene hard mode bases doesn't have their mobility and he's arguably a bit worse than Perceval statistically anyway). It only really looks that way if you compare entirely to the bad growth units, and uh bad growth units have sucked at pretty much all times throughout the series unless you just feed them every kill and stat booster.

Have you seen Merlinus' Luck stat? It's a legit strategy to use him as a dodge tank to protect squishier units, especially since enemies are coded to prioritise targeting him.
