I started playing this elsewhere, but I figured I'd get more engagement if I did it over here as well. Feel free to play along if you want.

Day 1: Getting a Commodore 64 for Christmas with five games. I played the hell out of TMNT, ATF, and Infiltrator 2. Shout out to the computer lab teacher in primary school who pirated a bunch of C64 games for me.

Day 2: Lufia & The Fortress of Doom. It was the first RPG I played where you start at the final moments of an adventure. You beat the final bosses, then calamity strikes and people die. Then the game starts. It's an incredibly mediocre game, but it still stuck with me.

Day 3: GoldenEye 64. Had to ban a friend of mine from proximity mines in the bunker, because he would just sit in one room with only two entrances, throw proximity mines on each entrance, and win that way. Fucking punk bitch. Shout out to couch co-op Diablo on PSX.

Day 4: Kuja. The best game in the Final Fantasy series obviously has the best antagonist. The game's overall themes of existentialism lent a deeper layer to the storytelling we don't usually see in RPGs.

Day 5: I'm not a huge platformer fan, so I'll give the nod to Super Mario 64. That game was massive when it came out, and it's just as good today. The camera is a bit stiff, though. I haven't played any of the PlayStation ones.

  1. Super Mario Bros. 3, I think.
  2. Assassin's Creed 3
  3. Conker's Bad Fur Day - had the GOAT multiplayer, as far as I'm concerned
  4. Gaunter O'Dimm from The Witcher 3
  5. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

I have started this game probably a dozen times since I had an SNES cartridge. It was only last week that I finally actually sat down and beat it. I loved the intro of the game.

something I noticed that was kind of cool.... the theme that plays after you beat the intro boss battle is remixed into the menu screen of the second game. It's great.

Each day is a superlative, it seems. Do what feels natural. If you just want to name a game, the name one. If you want to write a short little story about it, go ahead.

Day 6: What's more relaxing than taking a horse ride through the icy peaks of Skyrim? I guess the King of Red Lions in Wind Waker? Then again, there's Journey. It's right in the title. I'll go with that one. The ambient soundtrack really elevates the game.

1: I played my moms atari (I have no clue which one) when I was like 4-5 years old until my parents bought me a SNES for Christmas in 1993. We had a ton of atari games for some reason. I remember adventure freaked me the hell out.

2: FFX always stood out to me as the best opening sequence to a game. When I played it the PS2 was still pretty new to me so it was kind of a mind blowing experience in terms of the leap from the previous gen.

3: Played multiplayer SNES Mario Kart non-stop with my family during the SNES era. Put a ton of hours in on battle mode against my brother. Also loved playing NBA Jam multiplayer.

4: Also Kuja. FFIX was such a layered game that Kuja was presented very obviously as the outlandish villain, but may have not even been among the games biggest villains.

5: Gex obviously

1 - Pitfall on the 2600.

2 - Halo 1 had an amazing opening gameplay sequence.

3 - Splosion Man. It had an absolutely amazing couch co-op experience that I feel I will never get again.

4 - Luca Blight. Dude was a straight up psycho and laughed as you killed him. It took hundreds to kill him, while he slaughter people by the thousands.

5 - Sly Cooper series. Fantastic platformer with a focus on stealth!? Yaaaas

6 - Hmmm, maybe No Man's Sky?

7 - Worms Armageddon

Day 1 - Earliest video game memory: Parsec on the TI-99. I was like 3-4 years old. My mom would help me refuel the ship, because I couldnt do it without crashing.

Day 2 - Opening section of a video game: Final Fantasy IV. The Red Wings sack Mysidia, steal their crystal, leave a path of destruction, and Cecil returns with feelings of remorse. When he questions the king, he is expelled from the Red Wings and sent with his longtime friend Kain to deliver a package to the village of Mist. Queue the opening scroll and the Final Fantasy theme.

Day 3 - Local multiplayer: Super Smash Bros. Melee. I played so much of that in college with my group of friends, and there were 3 school wide tournaments for Smash across my sophomore, junior, and senior years. Absolutely loved it.

Day 4 - Favorite villain: Kefka from Final Fantasy VI. I almost didnt list him because I was was gonna use FFVI as the credit sequence answer later on (to play by hard more rules), but something else came to mind for that. Kefka is simply my all time favorite villain. As a teenager, the Kefka laugh seemed like such a cool tough to add some personality to the character. Add in some good storytelling, like him being a legit monster, that he does not begin as the clear cut end game villain (Emperor Gestahl seems like he could be it), and Kefka an actual villain that does succeed in taking over the world. Love to hate him.

Day 5 - 3D Platformer: Super Mario 64. It instantly comes to mind. The granddaddy of 3D platformers. This game seemed absolutely incredible when it first came out, and while many wont agree with me, I think it still holds up very nicely to this day.

Day 6 - Most relaxing navigation: This one took me a good amount of time. I wanted to say flying the Falcon in the World of Ruin in FF6 (as Searching for Friends plays), but hard mode is gonna stop me from that. Pilotwings on SNES comes to mind, flying the light plane. Same with riding Epona in Ocarina of Time. Hell, zipping across the skyline in Arkham City is an option. But I think Ill go with riding Enguarde in Donkey Kong Country, because it means you are likely listening to Aquatic Ambience in the process.

Day 7 - Favorite ranged combat: It can be tricky to pull off, but if you can start taking out structures in Red Alert 2 by using V2 rockets, its super gratifying.

1-Playin' Mario. Real simple. Not particularly exciting though.

2-Hotel Mario. Bowser shows up in record time unlike the other Mario games where they make you wait, Mario either questions Luigi's sexual orientation or reveals one of video games' earliest LGBT protagonists to be present. Luigi tells either Mario or the player to go to hell, nobody knows why for certain. Mario looks incredibly self-satisfied while telling you to check out the enclosed instruction book. Rivalled only by two of three Zelda CDI games.

3- I'm going to cheat. Rather than talking up any game's local multiplayer modes, my favorite thing that technically counted was people coming over with a memory card and going "I'm stuck, can you beat this for me?" It was mostly new games I'd beaten quickly or punishing 3D platformers.
It was a cool feeling and after 6th gen it seemed to disappear for good. Sometimes it went both ways, like with Pokemon where you'd help each other by trading.
How is this local multiplayer? Well, it was local and there were multiple players.

4- Dark Hero Jet Black. Jet told me over a decade ago that in the big evil looking castle that sprang up out of nowhere - despite the setting changing from Movieland to the real world - was where I would find an enemy beyond my imagination, the secret of the black film and the black v-watch. I've seen this location and can confirm that it exists so unlike with Captain Blue who confidently told me to expect a third threat, I still have no reason to doubt that Jet was lying. I am still waiting.
Jet's really cool. He's owns a movie theatre, wants to show people cool stories about heroes and is extremely selective about what he likes. I get it. He does something I like a lot, instead of trying to make it deep or serious, when he makes his move and reveals himself as the final boss he's all action and hams it up. I really like his voice, Keith Szarabajka's really endearing as both the "come ahn ya not quittin' on me now are ya?!" regular Jet and the "MUHAHAHAHA MORE POWER TO ME!" final boss version. That white outfit with the sword, the crescent moon helmet and the scarlet eyes is fucking viewtiful too.
His fight on Ultra V is happiness in video game boss fight form, only waiting on VJ3 to try and steal the title. You've got this guy taking your VFX meter to make shields, lowering gravity, firing air fireballs that put Akuma's to shame, flying around with his orbiting razor moon thing, constantly yelling "IT'S SHOW TIME" and all the time that song is playing. The award ceremony where the fight takes place is even worth a mention considering it's where I was left to wait, the place I am to return when the time is right and the three is where the two still it.
One day. Glory to Gedow.

5- Super Mario Sunshine. This is a hard one because I've really lost a lot of enthusiasm for these. Give me the one where you can cover the ground on water then slide on it for high speed, sure why not? I do still find the music pretty endearing and I appreciate that it's pretty challenging on the whole.

6- Tony Hawk's Underground 2. It doesn't seem like your normal contender for relaxing navigation or anything similar but here's the thing, I really don't like long stretches of going place to place. I know what's where in Lordran, I am very familiar with the Mojave Wasteland, what was once exploring is now mere walking place to place. THUG 2 though? I know most of those levels inside out and the game was designed for that to be the fun of it. The more you manual, grind and ollie, the more the points go up. It's not that hard to re-accumulate lost speed and it's a total non-issue once you unlock the Hotrod manual. Classic mode doesn't punish you, you can do one goal per run and it'll still let you check enough off eventually and move on. Story mode is this crazy dopamine vending machine where you just speedblitz a bunch of challenges and get hit with the rapid fire goal complete sound effects.
There's something about day/night cycles from games of this period too, this, Harvest Moon AWL, Dead Rising, stuff like that. I always found it was weirdly engrossing to see the day night cycle spinning while me, my stupid custom character of the day and sometimes other parts of the game remained completely unperturbed by it and totally fixated on skating around sticker slapping off of things. I am a sucker for nice evenings and dawns. The whole time the music never cuts out, you can customise your tracklist too and it's a solid selection. Another thing is as the years go on it becomes more and more like a time capsule, it's part skating, part punk music, part Jackass and all 6th gen video game.
It's a game with a lot of inputs and if you were new to it it might be asking a lot of you to learn your way around but once you've over the initial hurdles it's incredibly relaxing, almost meditative to play. It's not the conventional kind of relaxing, but if you fall back down, it's gonna pick you back up again.

7- Resident Evil 5. The Resident Evil 5 Infinite Launcher is the strongest rocket launcher I have ever encountered in a video game.
The RE5 Rocket Launcher is an absolute fucking murder cannon and probably the real reason Chris needed arms like that. Sheva wielding it without being sent into orbit by the recoil suggests she isn't even real, they DID give her a fairy tale outfit too. Perhaps she was a collective hallucination.
There are a grand total of two enemies safe from this thing and even then we all know they aren't really safe. Ndesu is a forced turret section but you know if you got to fire that thing at him it probably wouldn't even play the cutscene where the plaga spawns out his back he'd probably immediately walk off set and demand there be no El Gigante in RE6 because he really cannot keep doing this. Jill is the other exception. You can shoot Jill with the rocket and she will die. You aren't supposed to, because the game wants you to pull off her chest the device that apparently impairs her vision and intelligence to the point she engages you in combat despite you holding this thing, but you CAN.
Why not RE4's as well? In 4 you must hold R to pull the thing on to your shoulder and then fire a shot. Slow. Yeesh, what, where they trying to balance it? No thanks. In 5 you aim the gun you're cruelly pretending you'll be using, press on the directional pad for a quick switch to the Infinite Launcher and hold the fire button as it comes out for a quick fire. Hold the fire button. More rockets.
What can survive? Some bosses with armor if you didn't even aim and they're at the absolute brink of the blast radius. That's it.
What about Irving? He's a small target, isn't he hard to hit? You shoot the water beneath him, the blast damage is enough to one-shot him.
Isn't that second Uroboros boss glitched and apparently unkillable in later releases? You know what his glitch didn't save him from? This. One shot.
Wesker can dodge, can't he? Yes, he knows what he's dealing with. The superhuman final boss bobbing and weaving for his life only adds to this weapon's cred. If he gets hit while unaware or in his final form weak point, he's done.
Now I know what you're thinking. In UMVC3, critically acclaimed regular human beings Ryu and Chun Li can survive shots from it in his super can't they? Well you almost have me there but I will meet that by reminding you in that game, Chris can use that rocket launcher to kill Dormammu and Shuma Gorath.
I would say knowing is half the battle, but if you have this then there never was a battle in the first place.

Day 2: Metal Gear Solid - Docks. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I died there on the demo version of the game.

Day 3: Mario Kart 64 - We had the usual N64 party games but we always came back to MK64

Day 4: Borderlands 2 - Handsome Jack. It's rare to see a Deadpool like demeanor that just works for the game's setting.

Day 5: Ape Escape - To date probably still my favorite 3D platformer.

Day 6: Zelda: Breath of the Wild - I like the freedom of being able to dick around while in transit between destinations and being rewarded for it.

Day 7: Soldat - Simple 2D mayhem that can run on a potato.

8- I considered putting an actual Guitar Hero/Rock Band feat here instead of describing a time a game used music to wow me. But no.
Mega Man 9 it is. The whole game is the moment, this game has no bad songs. The boss theme has a rocky start but if the fight somehow goes a while I get into it. Every level theme is solid, even the time attack only special stage. A couple of the songs/jingles are borrowed from MM2 so credit there but still, you know you've done something right when I'm gauging how well I'm doing by what part of the song is playing by the time I'm at certain parts of stages.
I think Galaxy Man is the catchiest one.

9- Games aren't scary and even if they startle you it's extremely unlikely it'll get you the same way on a repeat playthrough. You know what's more real? That thing where you've poured time, effort and the starts have even agree to temporarily align for you, only for the game to hold it up and slowly start crushing it before your eyes. Usually this is reserved for speedrunners choking perfect runs but every now and then it goes beyond unofficial time attacks and finds its way into the actual game.
Payday 2 Goat Simulator, DSOD. Collect 15 goats on the largest map in the game from all sorts of randomised and extremely precarious spots. Enemies with no damage fall off, if they hit you it's point blank damage and kills most builds in 3 hits, everywhere. Cloakers, Tasers and Dozers which for the uninitiated are basically L4D specials with guns. The Captain can spawn in a far corner of the map which leads to a never ending wave where enemies constantly grow even stronger until he's defeated. Strats are weird in this one and kind of difficult to relay, you have to know where to park the car, when you're going to try and cross the map and the safest place to take cover is an actual burning apartment building. Good teammates in pubs are hard to come by, there's language barriers, there's people who beat it once and really don't want to go through it again, there's noobs who got the game yesterday and think this DSOD thing is probably easy, there's lots and lots of glitches keeping the chances of a crash taking all your progress away high and unifying them all there's that feeling in the back of your head that if you lose this run, someone's going to hit their breaking point and leave which in turn starts often causes a domino effect where the lobby empties.
And if you win... There's a second day! An entire other level that has to be beaten in the same sitting. One with its own heap of fate deciding RNG and the hardest part of the level sat nicely at the very last stretch.
Another thing with Payday 2 is it will very often afford you some sort of shortcut. You can stealth a lot of levels, there's often safe spots or the ability to reset for good RNG that makes it easy. DSOD Goat Sim has very little of this.
This is actually what I would think about back when I was playing it. "You know, the pressure I'm feeling right now, how tense it has me that I'm one misclick away from being downed in a remote spot by a ZEAL puts every horror game I've ever played to shame." It feels sort of good to get to type the sentiment out.
Payday 2 taking your progress on a level that feels insurmountable and slowly folding it in half is the realest sense of dread I've felt on a video game in years. In hindsight though, I'm a little envious of my past self for being that invested in something.

Day 9: Don't play a lot of horror games, and I'm also hard to scare. The most tense I've felt playing a horror game was running into the good Dr Salvador for the first time in Resident Evil 4. Hearing that chainsaw rev up in the distance while you're dealing with hordes of Ganado is anxiety inducing.

Day 10: Tetris The Grand Master 3: Terror Instinct - The ending credits are not just credits, they're part of the grading system the game uses. In order to qualify for GM, you must play invisible tetris and obtain at least one Tetris clear before the credits sequence ends. If you top out, the credits immediately stop and you fail. To date, it is among the hardest achievements across the Tetris series.

10- There's a melee combat category coming up and a best boss fight one too. I kind of want to go for the no repeat games challenge so I'm really not helping myself out by doing this but there really is no competition. It's God Hand.

11- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life's Forget-Me-Not Valley. I was halfway through trying to pick a town from Pokemon GSC and then the real answer suddenly hit me. I always thought this place was comfy as hell. It's got the 6th gen day night cycle where the world rotates through some nice color palettes every few minutes and this one even has timetables for the villagers. There's hidden event cutscenes all over, it changes with seasons, there's music in some places and ambience in others. I always liked that it was half normal people and half weirdos, with your character somewhere in-between. I was always disappointed there wasn't more to that magic forest area where the harvest sprites live and especially disappointed there wasn't anything to do at the beach where the game starts. For some reason though, it always got my imagination going and trying to come up with events that could happen or things they could have added there as you progress through the game.
This game's actually getting a remake so maybe there's hope for forest spirits wisping you off to secret areas and beached sea monsters befriending you. Then again they're making some noticeable changes to the characters and the guy in the direct straight up called it Forgotten Valley so I'd really be chancing it getting my hopes up.

8 - Opera House FF6

9 - Bathtub scene Eternal Darkness

10 - To The Moon

11 - Citadel Mass Effect 1

Day 11: Final Fantasy 7 - Midgar: The first time playing this, I thought this was always going to be the world as I slowly progressed through the first disc. After investing a few hours across a few days, my surprise to find out that there's a world map and not Midgar places that exist.

12. True Crime: New York City.

the game had so many things going against it, but the boss fights were unique and sometimes fun, and I liked the soundtrack.

Day 11: Harvest Moon is a "guilty" pleasure of mine. The center piece in any good farming sim is its town, and none hit me better than Mineral Town from the Story of Seasons series. It feels like a warm blanket on a cold day after trudging through the mountains. Fuck Rick though.

12 - Alpha Protocol - I realize that the game is inherently broken on both some of the game mechanics and the actual technical BUILD of the game.... but it is awesome.

Day 12: Sonic 06, purely because of the memes (thanks, Game Grumps). I don't usually play bad games, though. Hard to think of a single shitty game that I would term as my favourite.

12- Stiff competition. I like to be nicer with my overall opinions of games that make me laugh a lot but I get the gist of what this category wants of me. I guess I'll just throw it at Hong Kong 97. The game size: amount of laughs ratio is very strong. Revived as an ultimate weapon or not, Tong Shau Ping was unwise to mess with Chin.

13- These games are lame so this wasn't easy but I've found my loophole. Garry's Mod. Yeah it's a big open world city game. It's a lot of things actually but big boring open world city simulator is on the pile.

Day 1: Earliest video game memory - Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt, a gift for my 3rd birthday
Day 2: Opening section of a game - Metal Gear Solid, super cinematic intro with the credits appearing during gameplay was so unique at the time
Day 3: Local multiplayer - WWF No Mercy, the best memories with friends
Day 4: Favorite villain/antagonist - Gaunter O'Dimm from The Witcher 3
Day 5: 3D platformer - Super Mario 64, must've got 120 stars a few dozen times
Day 6: Most relaxing navigation - Death Stranding, traversal always immersive and even tranquil at times
Day 7: Favorite ranged combat - Dragon's Dogma, loved the bow and magick bow
Day 8: Best musical moment - Mother Russia Bleeds, there's a part midway through a level where you fight riot police and the hype-ass title screen theme starts playing, then they deploy smoke grenades that smoke up the whole screen and everyone becomes a silhouette. I have plenty of answers for this one but this popped up first.
Day 9: Scariest moment - Lisa in the cabin from REmake, granted I was like 13 at the time but still
Day 10: Credits sequence - Bayonetta, playable credits and a big dance number, what else do you need?
Day 11: Town or village - Kamurocho from the Yakuza series, they sure got a lot of use out of that map. I'm more familiar with it than any other.
Day 12: Favorite awful game - Deadly Premonition, I wouldn't even call it awful but I don't play many awful games to completion. It certainly suffers some technical issues and it looks like shit but it gets by with charm and atmosphere.
Day 13: Best open world city game - Sleeping Dogs, just to give that game a mention

Day 13: San Andreas - the PS2 version. I'm a big fan of the '90s urban aesthetic, and this was before Rockstar decided to take the arcade out of the series and make it purely life sim. Controls are dated now, but it's still highly accessible. Love rolling into Grove Street.
