14- Oh god damnit I've already used Mega Man 9 what am I gonna- Yoshi's Island. Easy. First things first, the baby shrieking never bothered me but I get the grievance. This game nails everything else. It looks nice, the music's great (And it's different to what you'd expect from Mario, it took me a while to warm up to the fortress/underground themes but I love them), the controls are rock solid and you can get away with some crazy stuff if you practice enough (Seriously go watch the TAS). On a more personal note this was the first game I played that did something special for its final boss fight so there's some bias to lump in.

15- I'm really not much of a story guy. If I resonate with something it's usually more to do with the characters. Obviously the only rational thing to do is pick Zero Wing.
After evil space pirate CATS sets up the crew of the Milky Way's last spaceship the bomb, becomes the new proprietor of all their base and declares they have no chance to survive make their time, they know what they doing and they reluctantly take off every zig.
They may be on the way to destruction and they may have no chance to survive, but there is still a chance... For great justice.

14: Super Mario Bros 3. I'm not a big fan of 2D platformers, but this was the first one I played that positively captivated me. Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World are both better games, but they aren't as good. SMB3 still holds up today.

Day 15: Xenogears is the first one to spring to mind. The story is densely packed and quite obtuse, but it was the first that went beyond simple love and betrayal, though that remains a central point in the story. The story can best be summarised as Adam and Eve kill God, but mechs and shit.

16- Uh hello? Pokemon obviously? Specifically Pokemon Colosseum. It's the one I have the easiest time going back to because it's so different. Everything's a double battle, it starts in the mid lv20s instead of at lv5 and you take Pokemon from trainers instead of rummaging around in the grass, water or caves. The Pokemon you catch in this one are much more interesting because it gives you limited choices but there's a good bit of variety between them and they're Shadow Pokemon which have a unique attack and need you to purify them. You only have to reach the second main boss for a shot at an Entei that won't flee. My favorite is the Hitmontop.

17- F Zero GX. It's so good Nintendo's thrown their arms up and refused to try and top it. And they even decided to tease us with that Mario Kart unlockable.
This game is all adrenaline. I can't get a sense of danger like going left and right on and off the track for small speed boosts in many other games. It's also really difficult which is nice because you can go back to it with a renewed sense of challenge, Chapters 1 and 7 on very hard are very good at folding people in half. Hell, it's so rewarding to unlock the AX racers that maybe I should have considered putting them down for day 16.
There's a whole bunch of tricks too, turn your engine off to avoid decelerating down to your top speed, the game's version of power sliding and snaking, the aforementioned on and off the track thing. The game never actually uses the phrase Show me your moves! but if it that that'd sum things up pretty well.
You know what it does say though? When Deathborn is asked if he has a message for his fans, he response with You're all going to die, say goodbye to your loved ones which also sums the game up decently well.

Day 17: Expecting something like Gran Turismo or Mario Kart? Both are iconic titles, but neither were played in the arcade to the degree that Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off-Road was. I spent so many quarters on that damn thing. The controls were responsive, and it actually felt fair to a degree. You could buy power-ups, extra nitro, stiffer suspension, etc. It lay a foundation for what arcade style racing could be.

Day 18: Oh man, there are a ton of great mini games in video games - Gwent, Chocobo Breeding/Racing, Triple Triad, fishing, to name a few. However, my vote goes to the Ancient Cave in Lufia 2. It's a whole mode in itself, and arguably gave birth to the idea of video game randomizers in the speedrunning community. It's a simple concept based on roguelike games, but it's so good. Go spelunking in a procedurally generated cave for loot. Anything that comes in a blue chest is yours to keep, but regular chests get lost when you leave. If you die before escaping the dungeon, you lose everything. Simple concept, but can keep you involved for hours.

18- I've already used Resident Evil 5 so I cannot recite my confession of love for RE5 Co-op mercenaries mode. So here's the thing RE5 Co-op mercs killed to take the title of the best. Runescape. Castle Wars. I don't know what they've done to it nowadays but back in the mid-late 00s, this was the most fun shit. It was like a giant clusterfuck with two teams, no effort to balance them, no consequences for losing or dying or playing poorly in general, any item or ability you can get hold of goes, AOE ice spells, barricade spam, battlements for projectiles, paths down the middle/mirroring stepping stone routes round the sides/an underground tunnel that you could collapse to one-shot opponents, more AOE ice spells, a catapult that could teamkill and especially the big waiting rooms full of people all filling the screen with GLOW2:WAVE1: @@@@@@@ CONGA LINE @@@@@@@ and the like.
It's one of those things that makes staying up all night feel special. It's like the video game version of those memories of endless summers. Why go to bed? You can go to this other world while yours sleeps. You'll like it.

Your 18 post reminded me of Ragnarok Online War on Emperium. What Wintergrasp should have been in World of Warcraft. A very simple design. Your invading an enemy castle, you have to destroy their orb. You do this by plowing your way through the enemy castle and attacking/casting spells on the orb while the enemy tries to stop you. It sounds a bit easy, but when there are literally dozens of guilds trying to stop you and only like 5 or 6 castles up at a time, it was great.

20- I have one big one that would fit but it's more personal and I have another one that's become more and more tainted over the years and doesn't deserve to qualify anymore. With those two out of the way, let's start rummaging. Randall Clark's diaries in Honest Hearts was cool but it didn't really hit me hard, there's the state of L4D2 with its legendarily bad playerbase, there's the classic see you tomorrow -> last online 4300 days ago thing. How about a more offbeat one? Owata 2. It's real simple, it's a very similar sequel to Owata 1, which came out in 2005. This time however, it's late 2019 and Flash has been discontinued and the world is disintegrating. Oh, and it's all in Japanese, so unless you watch a translation or can read it there's a language barrier there to get the imagination up and running, filling in the gaps. If you want to watch someone's old internet nostalgia flicker out, there it is. Except the Undertale reference really sucks a bit of the uniqueness out and also some people managed to save some Flash games so somehow Owata returned. Aside from that I liked it a lot.

21- This one's really really easy. Pokemon Silver. This was a frontrunner by most captivated I've ever been by anything. I would repeatedly talk to large swathes of NPCs after doing little things to see if their dialogue changed, examine every object in everyone's houses, full of wonderment and giddy unfamiliarity. It was incredibly memorable, the god forsaken Miltank, the Red Gyarados, finding Lugia and Ho-Oh organically, roaming legendaries being a new and novel thing, the god forsaken Kingdra, that hollow feeling when it ended, the elation when it un-ended and sent you to Kanto, the most stuck I've ever been on a video game (I thought there was an actual Poke Flute that you'd use on Snorlax, that you'd get by making the Lavender Town radio tower guy let you upstairs somehow. No guides and the only 'help' I got was someone lying and telling me I was right but he couldn't remember how he did it), that feeling of finding Cinnabar Island destroy and Gary Bluington acting out of character, Red at the end. It's a kind of game that probably cannot happen anymore, either because age makes you personally too familiar and capable of anticipating things like that, or because the internet spreads these sorts of things like wildfire and unless you want to go to great lengths to hide from it you're likely to encounter some kind of spoiler.
Oh, and there's just something about Goldenrod City, isn't there? And out-of-time feeling. The distinct looks, bigger than all the surrounding rural towns, the song which it doesn't share with another town like the rest. I always wanted to see it in 3D.

22- -Shifty Eyes-
This is a character from Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 named Viewtiful Joe. Here we see him featured in a game with a 3 in the title, with his main character status and his Dee Bradley Baker voice taken in exchange. Joe "Beautiful View Joseph" Black is a guy from a world where merely liking movies a lot will really get you places in life. After watching that South Park Russell Crowe episode, he discovered the salubrious effects of actors using violence to alter the outcomes of movies and immediately began rampaging through hordes of robots. He can store 99 boomerangs and 99 bombs - both about the size of his head - in his costume, he has the unique power of being completely invulnerable while performing a slow spin kick, he gives acapella performances of the Super Mario theme at random intervals and the frequency with which he will tell his opponents they're too slow puts SSBB Sonic to shame.
His games are pretty great. One day.

23- Maybe Scott Pilgrim vs The World. If they'd just put online multiplayer in from the start, right? For real though this was great. You could become obscenely powerful and punt enemies around the game, you could hit objects with so much force they'd slide back and forth ricocheting off sides of the screen. You could run laps of the whole thing really fast because it was fairly short and moved as fast as you could beat up enemies, the music is straight up great. I remember this game coming to me like a ray of light on a boring August mid-afternoon, I initially only responded with "Fine I guess I'll try the demo." because I didn't know what Scott Pilgrim was and I didn't trust licenced games at all. It ended up being great. I miss that sense of finding buried treasure in video game form.
