Anyone played this game? I played around 2 hours and I am kind of shocked how I've basically just been watching cutscenes this whole time.

I played Persona 3 Portable and absolutely loved it but I don't remember it being like this. Granted, since I played P3 I know it's going to be a 100 hour game and so on, so in the grand scheme of things 2 hours is not much.

But in P3P you could just skim everything quickly since it was basically a VN. Now you have to watch an actual anime and watch 3d cutscenes and stuff before you even get a chance to play. And I really feel like it's not acceptable, just get off work now I watch a bunch of a crappy anime and go to bed without even playing the game? that's what my first taste of this game was like and it just felt bad.

Dragon Quest 11 got going right away, yes it was "slow" in filling out your party and there were lots of cutscenes but at least you get to walk up the mountain on your own and fight some guys. In Persona 5 I have literally only done walking, talking, and about 4 scripted battles.

I guess I'm getting old and losing my patience for this meandering style of game. Already requested a refund so that's that. Persona 3 Portable will probably stay in my memory as a GOAT game but somehow this series is just not for me anymore. And I like anime and I like grinding JRPGs but I don't like whatever is going on here.

p3 is very much like this but for the psp version specifically they had to cut out the cutscenes and overworld so yeah you ended up playing the only persona game you would like, lucky I guess?

Persona 5 does suffer a bit from the first few hours being largely cutscenes and tutorial, as well as one stretch about 2/3 in that most people don't like for a list of reasons I won't get into here, but it's otherwise a good game. But yeah, it has the same problem going for it that some Zelda games (TP for instance) do.

Havent played 5 yet but that sounds exactly like Persona 3 and 4.

However, those games only started that way for the first 4-5 hours or so. As if youre on training wheels, and then after 5 hours they take the training wheels off and let you go off on your own. I would give it a couple more hours.

IIRC, P3s portable version edited out a lot of that intro stuff / open world stuff.

but thats just the way those games work. Its a 100+ hour investment, but you need to sit through a 5 hour prologue first

Echoing what everyone else is saying but yeah Persona games are like 70% Cutscenes/Dialogue adn they all take hours of tiem to get started adn even then you're still playing for what feels like a few minutes at a time. And yeah the games much like most Anime are aimed at Teenagers who have magnitudes more free time than an adult. As much as I loved the franchise as a kid I can't imagine getting into one now with much more limited time to play.

if smt didn't run like pure concentrated garbage, it might have been able to stand up against p5, but currently, unless they port it to stronger platforms and actually fix shit with it, then no. smt5 doesn't stand a chance against p5

if smt had even half the budget of p5 it would be nice too

yeah the performance alone killed SMT5 for me, shitty framerate and blurry textures everywhere. I didn't much like the changes to buffs/debuffs and having them be timed like Persona, I get that it's had the same battle system for over a decade but I liked the emphasis on buffs SMT as a whole has so it was shame to see it neutered a bit.

SMT V is a better game if all you care about is the gameplay, I think Persona 5 Royal is the better experience overall. I enjoyed both games quite a bit, but beyond both games having the demon fuse system they are so different it's unreal. Also with Royal you can skip the cut scenes if you want, so that is nice, it lets you fast-forward anytime you want.

ive felt your problem. Think it has to do with getting old, or having a mood to just stride when gaming instead of soaking in a new game/experience. Persona 4 had a real hits-home kind of feeling. Persona 5 just has awesome aesthetics.

Which system is the first Persona on? I feel like I'm not a real gamer for not playing it.

Are we old? Do we not immerse ourselves in the same way? I often wonder this and feel sad.
