I will give credit to the USA team for advancing out of the group without actually losing any of their games, especially when there were so many people pessimistic about their chances pre-tournament. This squad has some real potential in 2026 if the team and players can continue to develop.

This world cup really is the last shot for a ton of legends.
Ronaldo, Messi, Modric, arguably De Bruyne/Hazard.
Do I see Van Dijk or Neymar leading their nations in America? Probably not.

Eh, 2020 was probably the start.
You could see the number of quality defensive options rise, just kinda meh upfront without Robben/Van Persie/Sneijder/Van de Vaart/Huntelaar.

Now it's not great, but maybe just enough to pose a threat vs anyone.

Honestly, it's not inconceivable that USA could have a deeper run than England given that England will have to deal with France in the second round.

I've already come to terms with the fact we should beat Senegal and lose in yet another quarter final.

For the USA, while they'll likely be underdogs in the first two rounds, I'd at least say its relatively fathomable for them to move on, but then it would be a hard stop at the semis.

Everyone is expecting that semi final to be one of Spain or Brazil so anyone that beats them deserves to be in the final.

I've just been having another think about that 2026 format. The design is that bad we could end up with the best teams meeting each other in the last 16 simply because of how the draw went. In the current format if you win your group you're more than likely going to avoid a favourite until the quarter final at the earliest. With the new format all the top teams should win their group and avoid each other in the round of 32 but after that is when it turns into a free for all.

It's a bit of an issue. I think they should go the same route that the ATP/WTA Tours go in tennis for at least the Pot 1 teams. In that pot, the top 4 are randomized into separate quarters, teams ranked 5-8 are randomized so that they would face the top 4 in the quarterfinals (barring any upsets) and then the other 8 teams are randomly selected to lead the other groups.

Tennis fan speaking here. Not to agree or disagree with your suggestion at all, but merely to offer clarity, I believe that the Grand Slam draw is based as follows:

1-2: Obviously, on opposite sides.
3-4: Randomly on either side of 1 and 2. This provides some random chance in potential semifinal matchups.
5-8: Randomly drawn against 1-4, once again, to provide some chance in quarterfinal matchups.
9-12: Guaranteed to be seeded against 5-8, but that draw is random. This guarantees some chance in the bracket, but ensures the higher ranked half among 9-16 are seeded to play the lower ranked half among 1-8. (1-4 may only be drawn to play 13-16 by the round of 16, and 5-8 may only be drawn to play against 9-12).
13-16: Guaranteed to be seeded against 1-4, but the draw is random. This guarantees chance in the bracket, but ensures the lower ranked half among 9-16 are seeded to play the higher ranked half among 1-8 (see above).

Seeds 17-32: are divided in half on the same principle as seen above. Someone seeded 17-24 will only be drawn against players seeded 9-16, and someone seeded 25-32 will only be drawn against someone seeded 1-8.

Germany will cruise into the last 16 tomorrow. Japan deserve to be hammered for throwing away that golden chance.

I see we're switching to a 4-3-3, which is good, we should've done that against France as well, worked very well against them earlier.

France is doing us the favor of saving basically everyone from their starting lineup. I still don't think Tunesia wins, and even if they do and we do, they have to score more goals than us, but it's in their favor.

Well the French reserves look pretty average.

Australia's time wasting is the most boring thing to look at. Every set piece takes half a minute, I don't understand not handing out yellows.

2 minutes added after Australia deliberately not started play that has wasted way more time than that is demotivating for a World Cup that made a point about taking measures against time wasting. That's a joke.

If we take Germany winning as a given can Japan still advance with a draw? If Germany only wins by 1 then they would both be 1-1-1 with a GD of 0? Or does the head to head give Japan the edge in that spot?

If they get a 1-0 and the other game is 0-0 Germany advance on goals scored. If it's 1-0 and 1-1 then Japan advance on the head to head.

Germany only need a 2 goal margin to force Japan to go for the win. There's no way Spain are gonna lose to Japan when it means they finish second in the group.

Denmark need to be careful here because Tunisia are more than capable of getting 2 goals in their game.

More than capable are kind words for a team that has yet to score a goal this tournament.

I think worrying about this match is enough.
