I think the weirdest thing about the Fates 2nd gen excuse is unlike Awakening where its pretty clear you didn't actually like, go through the 'making them' process yet (for everyone but Lucina, anyway), in Fates everyone apparently speedruns pregnancy as soon as they get into a relationship.

"We got S support, time to start poppin' em out so we can ship them off to another dimension for more troops!"

It also happens between chapters that have no time gap between them, so yeah it's just nonsense. You pretty much HAVE to pretend it doesn't even exist to give even the slightest hint of a fair shake to the plot.

Well they largely aren't supposed to join back with the army. It just happens to happen every single time.

As I approach the end of these main series playthrough with the main games (I still plan on playing the Tear games!), what stands out to me the most is....just how terrible the common knowledge from schoolyard was back when FE GBA came out.

Never promote before 20.

Never use prepromotes.

I beat FE7 3 times between middle and high school and never once used a prepromote.

Meanwhile in nearly every game I've played, it's "how early can I justify promoting to start building weapon rank on my new weapon types", and "this prepromote is technically worse across the board, but they have A and S ranks built in while my Paladin now is sitting on a low C and high D, so it's an easy swap out".

Man Scarlet dying in Revelations has to be one of my most disliked choices they did in Rev (and there's a lot).

I think Birthright is the game that people dislike the least anyway. Some people hold up Conquest but only if you care about gameplay/music and nothing else.

Yeah, I really don't like how they handle Flora in Birthright but I guess that's just one questionable plot decision of many. Speaking of which, her recruitment in other routes can be missable if you aren't upgrading the Fire Orb defence in your castle.

Disliked the least maybe, but it'd never win over Conquest in a straight-up poll of which game people like more. You'd have to be more or less polling people who don't really like either to achieve a result where Birthright wins by default.

Well I also think Conquest's side has better characters than Birthright's side, honestly. Mostly, anyway, there are still a few lame ducks.

I'm just not a fan of when a map quickly turns into all my units snaking around in a line across a big map. Even if the snake has to coil around its functionally the same issue.

Basically anytime it turns into in a mini Geneology OUTSIDE of Geneology, lol.

Conquest's cast is much better, particularly the royals. And it might not be a common opinion, but the story's a lot more fun, too. Everything that happens is so delightfully silly.

To me Revelation is the one were the story sucks but at least is occasionally amusingly stupid. Conquest has a vague resemblance to a good story that makes it extra aggravating when it fails so badly to deliver.

I'm not sure Conquest has the better royals. Xander and Camilla are probably the worst of the 8 and I probably take Takumi over Leo too. But then Elise is clearly the best one by a huge margin and Ryoma, Hinoka, and Sakura are all about as interesting as flavorless gum. Really a toss up!

Edit: This is about character writing, not how powerful the units are if that wasn't obvious. Just realizing now Mac might have meant the other way?

I assume you mean purely as characters, because my recollection is that Camilla is completely busted

I'm talking purely about characters. Camilla and Elise are fun as heck, while Ryoma and Takumi are ultra boring. Xander isn't the greatest but he's way better than Ryoma, and I enjoy Leo too. I like Hinoka but she's a bit underused, and Sakura is a bit bland.

Got pulled away from continuing the map for a bit, but am I correct in thinking that even after promotion bonuses that this Sakura is, like....way better than she should be?

Leo isn't wrong, Conquest Takumi is a complete asshole and it redeems how bland he is in Birthright.

Male Kana is by some distance the worst avatar kid. And yes, that Sakura looks highroll as heck.

even in my greatest moments of camilla apologism i would not describe her as "fun as heck".

Leo was easily the best of the four Conquest royals. Camilla and Elise were bad versions of tropes that already suck even when they're well written, and Xander is in the running for dumbest person in the series. Leo at least got close to being the bad guy that Conquest should've committed the cast to being. I'm not even saying he's good or anything, but the bar is so low that he's good by comparison.

OK if we're counting in game hair and not just character art then sure.

I don't remeber what dumb stuff is in Revelations, but I'm imagining Fates as a single game that's retooled to start out exactly like Birthright and actually convince and recruit Nohrian units to your team as you progress to the final showdown with the mad king, and that seems like the best direction they could have taken. Cut or retool the kids as normal characters that aren't related, shake up who gets recruited when, Nohr as the defacto antagonist. Sure, there's some ancient evil twist still, but what I do remember about Revelations is that nobody wanted the revelationa that were it's namesake, so Garon is still the final boss in some way like I assume he is here.

I remember that being one of the better Fates maps actually, though IIRC it's more interesting on the other two routes than BR.

As someone who isn't a big fan of the way anime art styles are trending these days, I don't miss old anime hairstyles.

I think the only thing I don't like about so many wierd promotion and weapon combos is that the weapon rank situation is absolutely dire.

Almost every non pre-promote in my party is sitting on an E rank something 20 chapters in.

Oh I just realized there's no Hoshidan Javelin, no wonder it's in such a limited quantity.

I'm assuming Nohr Javelins will be plentiful, but there won't be a Kodachi quivilant. Probably just as many Hand Axes as there are Throwing Clubs, though?
