A tie wasn't much better than a loss for the US here. Only way to avoid needing to win against Iran was to get a win against England.

In the US-Iran game, if it is a tie, Iran would beat the US x-x since the US would be eliminated and Iran would advance unless Wales beats England.

If ties were rare they would be interesting. However, since soccer is such a low scoring game, ties are very common. It is ridiculous that they allow ties in an event that only happens every 4 years. Hell, literally half the games played on Tuesday were an infamous 0-0 tie.

Ties are allowed in the group stage because it's basically just a round robin. Matches can't end in a tie in the knockout stage which comes next.

Not in context. Sometimes you get a team that's taking like a shot on goal every 5 minutes and they always come super close but just never get it in. You have to actually watch the game. Just looking up the score and going "wow 0-0 nothing happened" is not an accurate assessment.

Ngl, but if me typing up some half-assed paragraph was your go-to definition of effort, then you have a very low threshold, shallow grasp of the word.

Besides, it's not as if the rest of the world hasn't been collectively mocking England for their underperformances at world cup events for decades already.

I don't give a fuck about the rest of the world nor the lore of the world cup enough to take that into consideration.

I laughed because that was some funny shit. Deal with it.

I've seen several 0-0 soccer games in my years. I have a friend who's very into it, and sometimes we'd go out to eat at a sports bar or something and watch the soccer game of the week or w/e.

I can tell you without a doubt that a 0-0 soccer match is extremely boring.

Edit: a 1-0 soccer match is boring, too. In fact, a 10-10 soccer match would also be boring because soccer is a boring sport.

Not always.

I find football boring as hell, even at the best of times, but I can see the excitement created from how great set ups and "almost goals" with scrappy defenders furiously working to get the ball out can be.

But when teams play very passively/safely, it's just good material to send me to sleep tbh.

I think this can be interesting, too, but...most of the time those moments are few and far between. If I had to pinpoint one reason why soccer is so boring, I think it's because the field is just...massive. It's as big as a football field but without any of the rules that make football interesting to watch. Football feels much more intimate because of how yard gains/losses factor into field position, so a 10 yard gain feels huge and nets a first down.

In soccer it's just...~80 yards of neutral territory with only a scant few spaces on the entire field that actually feel like high-tension zones. A game with a huge field like soccer or football cannot use the entire field at all times and still be interesting.

Just my opinion, obviously, but the action has to have some way of progressing without just being a shoving/kicking match in the middle for 90% of the runtime. Soccer feels boring because it looks boring. I'm sure the players are running their hardest and doing insane stuff with ball handling and positioning and whatnot, but to the average viewer it really does just look like a bunch of small dots on a huge field chasing a ball back and forth for 90 minutes straight. With way too many penalties.

Maybe? As I said, I find it boring so I can't really comment much on it. But it's the most popular sport around the world for a reason, and clearly are many matches that are adrenaline pumping, including draws.

But like any sport, it can be filled with lazy/passive playing which makes for boring matches.

And it's called "the beautiful game" for a reason as well. When it's played well, even I can admit it is very stylish. Good defence, tackling, getting past defenders etc with fancy footwork is impressive as fuck.

Draws being "anticlimactic" and otherwise unacceptable is a very American (and to a lesser extent, Canadian) mindset.

For example, MLB plays extra innings until there's a winner in every game. Hell, there have been games that went so long they suspended play for the night and resumed the next day rather than just calling it a draw. However in Japan and Korea's baseball leagues there's a 12 inning maximum. If it's still tied at the end of 12 innings, it's a draw.

And if you look at sports common outside of North America but rare here, such as cricket, ties are usually seen as fair and acceptable outcomes unless it's like a single-elimination tournament where a winner obviously is required.

Very true. Baseball has a lot more going for it than soccer, imo. Baseball might be a 'slow' game by a lot of definitions, but something interesting is happening with every pitch. The same 'might' be true for soccer for those who are very interested in the sport, but the difference is that soccer takes place on this huge barren wasteland of nothingness.

In baseball, you know every pitch can lead directly to a run being scored, or even multiple if the bases have runners on them. There's an ebb and flow, where you set up good positions to make huge gains and the pitcher has to plan very carefully not to give away runs or walks or any of that.

Soccer is too binary. You're either in scoring position or you're not, and 99% of the time it's not.

Another game that's relatively low-scoring is Hockey, with soccer being something like 2.74 goals per game and hockey being something like 3 goals per game.

But hockey is exciting to me, because it's on a smaller play area, the players are all skating and handling sticks, and the goal is very small so it feels like the players have to be more precise to actually score. Soccer mostly just feels like a very, very long game of tug-of-war, and that can be cool for some people but definitely not for me.
