Confirming this. Fiddler's sacrifice is one of my favorite tales from these lists, I can feel the gravitas of the moment just from having it retold. And I'm a sucker for heroic sacrifices. And violins.

33. Laura Penn

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/8/8/AAS3NhAAD9oo.jpg

So, it's kinda funny Laura is coming directly after Manitou Dawn, because how I came to like her as much as I do is kind of opposite to how I came to like Dawn.

I very specifically recall Scarlet in a voice chat one time long ago mentioning that he didn't really care for Laura Penn all that much, being that she was in that grouping of characters that technically appeared in DC comics but were basically original characters but hadn't been fully crafted like Patch or Starsa or Pixie. He didn't understand why she was suddenly getting so many scenes over much more developed characters (I'm paraphrasing, give me a break, it's been like 2 years).

The why, of course, was because she Z'onn Z'orrs resident tailor, which gave players a specific service that only she could provide. Now, deep down, part of me can't help but want to be a heel of a player once in a while, and this negativity only made me want to go see her more, which worked out well, as her skills are more than just making clothes. She serves as a sort of mirror to the characters (to Bloodfruit at the very least), helping to craft the player's vision of who they want their character to be. In a world of superheroes and endless numbers of special or magical items, your outfit is essential in establishing your own character.

Laura's been there every step of the way, helping me craft the way Bloodfruit portrays herself to those around her, and helping me along in some of my most important personal quests (we'll get into those later). And I'd LIKE to think that in the time since the initial sentiment Scarlet has come around on her, and recognized her importance the way the players (or me, specifically) see it.

Hint for #32: This character has an alliterative name

Laura has always been great with Roz'etta.

For reference, Laura's theory on the universe is called string theory. Not how we think of string theory, but strings tying clothing together.

And, of course, Laura has disguises made for everyone in each section of her Disguise Room. Roz'etta's disguises aren't clothing, instead it's more or less an issue of Better Home and Gardens. Laura's great.

I've certainly come around some on Laura. I think oftentimes it's just an issue overexposure, when a character is being stretched beyond the amount of storytelling they can support. That tends to afflict a lot of different characters over time.

honestly that's a little bit of her charm. She doesn't have the long, expansive backstory of your Wallers and Constantines, and that's part of what makes her work so well as a sort of reflecting pool for the PCs

32. Lady Luck (Brenda Banks)

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/8/7/AAS3NhAAD92r.png

and here I thought the alliterative hint would make things too easy

Hey, it's another character I need to spend more time with! A part of the Oblivion Bar's resident staff, Lady Luck, much like Flippy, is one of the biggest constants of the bar, always there to show a smile and deliver a fresh glass of juice (or milk, if you're a weirdo) or whatever concotion she thinks will really bring some cheer to the person she's serving.

She has a way of reading people and knowing exactly what'll make their day. In Bloodfruit's case, that comes in the form of presenting her with sweet fruits and delicacies unknown to earthgoers but that take her back to memories before everything went so badly. More importantly, she's a lady with a story of her own to those who care to hear it. Eventually she sat down with Bloodfruit to tell it, a tale of extraordinary luck (think Marvel's Domino with less guns) and a loving relationship turned sour and then tragic, as her luck was reversed and she began to rapidly lose everything, including her soul. Her once faithful husband resorted to gambling to get by, and ultimately lost both his own soul and hers in a deal with Faust that in the end landed him in hell and her as a seemingly eternal servant within the confines of the Oblivion Bar.

On a more personal note, I want to hear more of her story, whatever more there is to tell, though, as with the stories of many characters, I always worry that crucial parts of their stories have already been told and I've simply missed or forgotten them, and always worry about the awkward moment of trying to discover something new only to realize it had already been discovered by other players months earlier. Perhaps that's why I gravitate to more niche characters at times, whose stories run more parallel to my own. But perhaps that's a conversation to be had with Dr. Harleen Quinzel, the resident therapist. Either way, Lady Luck is a treat I'm always happy to see more of.

Hint: This is four characters in one slot because fuck your stats this is my world now

31. Damn-All, Darling-Come-Home, the Inner Child & Scott Fischer

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/7/7/AAS3NhAAD-Ht.jpg https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/7/8/AAS3NhAAD-Hu.jpg https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/7/9/AAS3NhAAD-Hv.jpg https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/8/8/0/AAS3NhAAD-Hw.png

This is my ranking and I will rank as I see fit, and in this case that means ranking an entire session of one-off characters into a single slot.

Our quest to find allies in the Doom Patrol led us to a place called Midway City. Anyone familiar with the Doom Patrol knows things involved with them are rarely straightforward or how they initially appear. Sure enough, we come to Midway City to find it overtaken by beings that defy any law of reality. Damn All, a terrifying giant who peers down at us from above with many eyes and a mocking grin. His wife, Darling-Come-Home, a woman with a lightbulb for a face who resembles classic housewife stereotypes. Inner-Child, a flying baby with no face that would chase us around. Seriously, everyone and everything here was straight nightmare fuel. Everyone, of course, except Scott Fischer.

Scott Fischer was an original member of the Doom Patrol, a very young man who claimed to recall dying but still found himself halfway into the mortal plane, able to speak with us and assist us in our journey while remaining incorporeal. Said journey lands us in Mentoville, a 50s-era black-and-white neighborhood where all the PCs are put through mundane tasks that continue to shatter reality. An ex-Doom Patroller named Vortex forced to act as a neighborhood dog. Bones transforming into umbrellas. Windows serving as portals. Time freezing and repeating.

All the while Damn All, Darling and Inner Child watch our every move, the threat of death looming over us should we act out of turn. As we unpack the mysteries of Mentoville, various things come to light. Damn All, Darling and the creepy flying faceless baby are all the imaginary friends of Dorothy, a powerful meta from the Doom Patrol who had the ability to bring the beings to life, and all of Mentoville is a manifestation of the mind of Mento, the world's most powerful psychic, whose mind had been overtaken by some mystic painting.

Ultimately, it was the destruction of that painting that freed us from Mentoville, along with Mento, Vortex and several other of Mentoville's victims. All except Scott. As the fictional figments of Dorothy's imagination were destroyed, it was revealed that Scott's incorporeal form, a recreation of Dorothy's memory, was one of them and our newfound friend and ally was destroyed as well. So if you feel like calling this a ranking of one character, I guess you could call it Scott's, but ultimately all four of them are the key components to make up the campaign's best fever dream.

Hint for #30: This character is shorter than any of the PCs

30. Susie Thompkins

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/0/7/AAOJ0pAADaVj.png

Scarlet won't admit to it but everyone in the campaign knows he's particularly good at doing voices. That being said, no single voice sticks in my head, and I assume the heads of every other player, as Susie Tompkins Schtone, the telepathic niece of Lois Lane whose powers were blown to ungodly and terrifying proportions by the helmet of Mento, a character that may or may not appear later on this list, who knows.

She's got at least three catchphrases that I can think of off the top of my head, and she's a violent and malevolent sociopath. A sociopath that Rozetta took in as a daughter, thus putting all of Z'onn Z'orr at the mercy of a maniacal child that walks around with a gun (that she frankly doesn't need, because again, telepath).

Bloodfruit's initial discovery of Susie's gun was having it aimed at her while trying to take a javelin from what she had believed to be an unoccupied room, that also turned out to not even have the javelin there (this is, again, that stealth javelin that is still in a polar bear somewhere). Bloodfruit was held down by a screaming and packing child while the surrounding hallway erupted into madness.

Ultimately, there's not much I can say about Susie that wasn't already covered by War's several-page-long write-up for #1. The weirdest thing about Susie is still that, despite being an actual dangerous psycho, she's still somehow sweet and endearing, and also one of the campaign's biggest sources of humor.

Hint for #29: This character, like Susie, starts with an S.

...admittedly coming up with hints that don't give away the ranking is harder than it seemed.

Susie is certainly one of my favorite characters. I think I have a better bead on her than most, and she meshes well as an antagonist with everyone, at the very least, if not an ally. Bloodfruit really played well with the chaos, I thought.

29. Sasha Bordeaux

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/7/0/1/AAQcMAAADifV.jpg

Sasha serves Z'onn Z'orr
as warden of its holding
overseeing those

Those found doing harm
and brought in for questioning
or for protection

Bloodfruit, several times
has sought those in holding cells
finding common ground

She see in those souls
Similarities that she
Can't always explain

This act requires
Frequent interaction with
This cold, metal lass

Sasha's unique speech
Comes through exclusively in
the form of haiku

I can't imagine
This is easy for Scarlet
but it's fun to read.

Sasha is a difficult character to write about, not because it's being done in haiku, but because doing so requires bringing up a section of the campaign that was particularly difficult for me. Sasha was one of the earliest characters that clicked with me. There are so many complex mysteries revolving around Sasha, her past, the way she speaks and presents herself and the terrible things she may have done. And from the earliest weeks of rp, I dove headfirst into all of those mysteries. I immediately love a quirky character that breaks the molds of those around them, and looking back through old chats, there's a weird sense of bittersweet nostalgia seeing old discussions about how Bloodfruit and Sasha got along immediately.

Then I ran into personal issues, which I won't spend more time talking about on here than necessary, and had to take a several month hiatus from the campaign. As I was gone, the mysteries continued to evolve and develop, as did inter-character relationships and Z'onn Z'orr as a whole. I ended up finding that Sasha's mystery, being as deep as it is, was difficult to jump back into after that time away, especially as Sasha's relationships evolved more with others in my absence.

That's not to say I missed it, as the mystery is still expanding through current sessions, and I still love my visits with Sasha when stepping into holding, though I think there's a mental block for me stopping me from jumping back in the way I had before.
