8. Amanda Waller

I'll be fully honest, going into this campaign at the very beginning, when Waller was introduced as the "main overseer" of sorts for this campaign, I didn't think she end up placing super high for me in the long term. Oracle was the extremely reliable and generally likeable leader of our respective mini-groups of rising heroes as we navigated No Man's Land. Everyone liked Oracle, particular given she's kind of designed to be likeable in a way, as she's there to help the players every step of the way.

Going into Campaign 2, Amanda Waller was presented as the head of Checkmate, and therefore essentially the "Oracle" of the campaign. I assumed, given the role Oracle took, given Waller's appearance in campaign 1, and given what I generally know of the character that I had a pretty clear idea of what to expect from Waller. I saw her providing the missions and resources for the players while being a little less hands on and a lot less outwardly friendly than Oracle. Given that I was going in playing a fantastical full-nonsense runaway fae, I didn't think that Bloodfruit will necessarily click to well with the down-to-earth, zero-nonsense queen boss. In some respects I was right, in others I was very wrong.

I should've known Waller would end up being much more complicated than I assumed, and before too long Bloodfruit, like many PCs, began to develop an unique and complicated relationship with Waller. Yeah, she's tough and intimidating and doesn't put up with shit, but she's also startlingly understanding. Bloodfruit became something of an outlier among the field teams pretty early on, with her methods of going about missions being unconventional, for lack of a better way to describe it. A combination of Bloodfruit's lack of understanding over the mundy world, unusual takes on how to achieve mission objectives, and slow appearance of unknown powers landed her in Waller's office a lot early on.

And for all the tough exterior she maintains, even when she was frustrated with Bloodfruit, it never came across as oppositional. Much like Bloodfruit has since come to try and find something special in those others might not see much in, Waller did the same for Bloodfruit from the beginning, seeing potential in Bloodfruit that nobody else seemed to. Much of what Bloodfruit has accomplished in her time in Checkmate wouldn't have been possible without Waller's unusual shockingly supportive tendencies. That's not to say she won't crack down when she needs to, but she's proven herself time and time again to be more than willing to hear the PCs out on whatever they may want to attempt.

Perhaps my favorite moment of Waller's wasn't even involving Bloodfruit, when Brennus was spurned by his mother-turned-Fury Varra, and Waller just held him tight as he sobbed from the traumatic experience.

I think Waller and Bloodfruit have such a unique relationship in the campaign - it's fascinating!

Waller is great with everyone, yet every case feels so unique despite her having made a decent connection with every PC.

7. Spectre

Campaign 1 could be said to have had two big bads: Joker, the terrifying maniac behind many of No Man's Lands worst events, and Neron aka the Demons Three, the continuous supernatural antagonist(s) that would show up at our most sensitive moments to mock and deride us for our failures, all the while serving as a legitimate major threat. In campaign 2, the big bads are a little more clear-cut: Darkseid, the massive interstellar overlord that seems to lead all of our enemies, and the Spectre, the vengeful fist of god that's gone rampant and is slaughtering magic-users and naysayers with violent disregard.

Now Darkseid didn't make this ranking or any other, which makes sense given we've never actually met him, only dealt with his vast masses of followers. But Spectre? We've fuckin met Spectre, and he is terrifying every time. With how much I loved Neron in campaign 1 it should be no surprise really how well Spectre does with me here, with the extra bonus of me already liking Spectre as a character prior to the campaign.

The limits to Spectre's power seem incomporable; he's a horrifying enough threat that every magician in the world has found themselves in hiding, for the thought that Spectre might come and evicerate them. There was a moment in campaign 1 with Bug-Eyed Bandit, a low-level supervillain turned Knightsdome competitor turned Obrov's close friend. Obrov jokingly mocked Superman aloud and in good fun, but BEB immediately showed fear, as doing so breaks a sort of unspoken rule amongst petty villains; don't mock Superman out loud, because he could easily hear you and kick your ass. Now, Superman's gotta better things to do and wouldn't actually concern himself with something so petty. Probably. But Spectre? He would and has. You insult the Spectre in open air, you die. Simple as that.

He's one of the most constant terrors of the campaign. We might go 30+ straight sessions without seeing him, but the thought in the back of your mind is always there. If you're not careful, Spectre might show up and wreck your shit. If you ARE careful, Spectre might STILL show up and wreck your shit just to spite you. If Spectre ever managed to somehow get into the Oblivion Bar, it might mean the very end of the world as we know it.

So many of the campaign's moments come directly as a result of the big green giant's direct interactions, whether it's absolutely destroying Brucke der Dunen and Blackbriar Thorn or Shazam and the Rock of Eternity or just a simple Star Sapphire, he's always out there, and he's always stronger than you by a trillionfold.

Hint for #6: This character falls just short of the top 5

I think if someone else were to rank him thus far it would have been Brennus. His time with him in his nightmare was really good. There hasn't been a lot of hanging out with him beyond that

That is a great way to show why Spectre is a terrifying looming threat. "What if Superman was really petty and vengeful?"

If you had told me prior to this campaign that one of my favorite characters would end up being a bratty Veruca Salt-type kid themed after a bratty nursery rhyme character, I probably wouldn't have believed you. At the very least, I'd be confused and ask for more clarification. So clarify, I shall!

Goldilocks we found back in Jackson, an Apokoliptikan fire pit being taken over by The Society. It was the introductory session of Silhouette actually, the PC that took over after Taliesin died in Warpath. He was being held and tortured by a handful of the worst of the worst scumbags the Society had to offer. Many of those Society minions went up in flames when Jackson exploded, leaving a firey mess in its wake. Of course, we couldn't leave the Society's youngest member behind to die in the blast, so Goldilocks came along with us, though she put up a fight in the process.

See, Goldilocks is just a kid, one with abilties based on her hair, and whose sister Godiva had gone missing, leaving her alone and vulnerable in a terrifying world. It's frankly no wonder she ended up taken in by the Society, given her options were largely that or die at the hands of the equated or Parademons or whatever else may come along. She was brought to Z'onn Z'orr as a captive villain; her head was shaved to prevent her from using her most powerful asset, and she was locked alone in a cell, abandoned with no way of finding her missing sister.

Of course, Bloodfruit, one of those who helped take down Jackson and bring her in, was wracked with guilt over the idea of locking away an impressionable child for the crime of doing what she had to to get by, and took it on herself to really rehabilitate Goldilocks and give her a second chance at life, in a situation of parables so closely related to her own story that it would be painful to overlook them.

It wasn't an easy task, and much like with Jay, is a sort of point of pride in that it has been a task I've taken on directly as a player, slowly going through the steps of helping Goldilocks find both companionship and a solid role within Z'onn Z'orr. With the permission of Amanda Waller and the help of Etta Candy, Goldi eventually regrew her hair, was released from the holding facility and took up a room with Bloodfruit. The two have become almost like sisters, filling a role for one another that they both crucially needed.

Also much like Jay, Goldi is not a person that clicks with the majority of the people she comes across, as her sometimes (usually) entitled nature drives the ire of many, Etta herself included. But these flaws are easy for Bloodfruit to look past, as she has begun to care deeply for the child like a proper sibling. Most recently, on the urging of Bloodfruit, Goldilocks has joined the London field team under the watchful eye of Sir Justin and Valda, allowing her to explore what was once her home and continue looking for clues about her missing sister (all the while, Bloodfruit may know just a touch more about the unconfirmed but possibly tragic fate of Godiva than she would let on).

Hint for #5: This person has at one point shaken hands with Bloodfruit.

We believe her to be in the STAR Labs in LA. But most of the names we know there are assumed to be in their morgue.

Hard to say, but we believe she's at least on ice or something.

She appears to be held by STAR Labs in LA which just kidnapped Metamorpho's son iirc, courtesy Madame Rouge's daughter.

Yeah everything with Godiva's location right now is unconfirmed, but the hope regarding her is a bit bleak at the moment. But rehabilitating Goldilocks is also extremely dependent on her maintaining hope that her sister is out there

What is the end plan if she is in fact dead? Rehabilitate Goldilocks so well she can handle the bad news eventually?

pretty much. I've been trying to do as much as I can for Goldilocks to make her feel like a proper member of the community rather than a prisoner but it's hard to say what would happen at this point if we discovered Godiva had passed.
