Sonic's first adventure into an open zone has come to an end. Not to regurgitate what the reviews have said, but this Sonic Team seems to have finally found an evolution for the franchise that works and is fun to play. Not everything in this game works and it has a load of technical issues, but you can see a future where they iterate on this and in a game or two from now we have the best 3D game ever. The actual open zone areas are a blast to explore and lost many hours just running around getting every collectible even though you definitely do not need all of them to 100% the game. I was just doing for the fun of it. The Action Zones are more of a mixed bag. There's only 4 different variations of them (Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary and City Escape) and they're often too short and have the same weird 2D controls that Sonic Forces had. As you get further into the game they do get a bit better and longer and are often recreations of stages from past Sonic games. I lit up when I hit 4-1 because that's just Metal Harbor from Sonic Adventure 2. Anyway good first attempt, but still tons of room for improvement so I'm looking forward to what they follow this up with next.

Platinum is a simple 100% completion. There's 4 main islands and as long as you completed all the challenges and fill out the maps on all of them you pretty much got it. Final time was about 36 hours, but I did let the game idle a lot so it's probably a lot shorter than that to platinum. If you're looking to just mainline the game you can do it in like 20 I would imagine.

Hm, I'll probs wait a couple games until we get to the Best 3D Game Ever then. But Metal Harbor does tempt me!

How's the story and music?

There's not much to the story, but what is there they try to tie together all the games in the series into a single timeline and it's clear these characters have SEEN SOME SHIT in their lifetimes and are dealing with the mental trauma all these adventures have caused. Also the origin story of where the chaos emeralds even came from if you're interested in finding that out.

Music in the open zone is calm and doens't stand out too much. Action stages have a lot of techno and electronic music and seem appropriate for the cyberspace they take place in. The real bangers (and the highlight of the game in general) are the boss fights when you're Super Sonic. They're all awesome and get you pumped up to knock down some giant robots.

I thought getting 99 on all stats was gonna be the grind, but fishing in the final zone just solves that lmao

I think the only game I've ever reached 100% achievements with is Celeste (which I actually did twice, since it added more when Farewell was added)

Both Windjammers immediately come to mind as good experiences for me

The first one I played religiously every day for 2 months straight until I was able to beat the Arcade mode on Hard (which the AI cheats and is harder to fight than any human) and that made me good enough at it to get 3rd place at it at Michigan Masters in 2019 then 24th at EVO Online in 2020.

Then Windjammers 2 came out at the beginning of this year and by carrying over what I learned I ended up being the first person in the world to get the platinum in it.
