There was in the FGC. Just go on a video with Bridget and you would see butthurt people about how Bridget being trans somehow hurts her story even though her story was just a dumb excuse to put a cute boy into a girl outfit.

That was one of the most frustrating things. I've been a Guilty Gear simp for most of my life, I ran into the GBA port of X as a teenager and I was just fuckin captivated by how large and lively the sprites were. Then I like googled the franchise and started listening to the music, then I got this terrible Accent Core Wii port with no story content, and I played it for the aesthetic until I actually got decent enough at the game.

I was blown away by Xrd's reveal, because I had come into the franchise three years into the hiatus and the rights issues made it seem like BlazBlue was going to be their GG Expy going forward. I've been invested in this franchise for at least twelve years, almost certainly more.

And then when Bridget was made trans - look at all these fucking strangers who are suddenly experts on the franchises bending over backwards to say "Bridget isn't trans and if she is that's bad character writing and actually problematic for real trans people". None of the passion and appreciation that I have for the franchise, just half a sentence of lip service so some jackinape can go "actually this is wrong and bad, and if you don't understand why you're not a real fan".

It hasn't happened yet but people probably would...

that's an interesting perspective. i definitely remember people trying to say she wasn't "actually trans" in the JP version or something and then... they were just completely wrong. i don't play the games but her story seemed good from what i read.

Bridget was born male with a twin brother in a village where the birth of same-sex twins is considered bad luck; therefore, Bridget's family named and raised Bridget as a girl.
In young adulthood, Bridget rejected this upbringing and set out to be a man.

Im reminded of the David Reimer case. This dont sound so good.

In adulthood, Bridget found that being a man did not make her happy, and realized her desire to be a woman not for the sake of her village's superstition, but as her own choice of gender identity.

Oh ok so it worked out in the end and all is good.

There were plenty of people who accepted it as canon but still didn't like the removal of a girly boy character. Prior to the character being trans she was instead an icon for male femininity.

Are you humble bragging you played the worst versions of the games? I don't understand the point of this post

I don't really have a dog in this fight because I play fighting games for the gameplay....but when Bridget first came out she was a boy raised as a girl because her village or whatever feared twins or something like that. I don't know if that makes her trans but I remember it just being a girly boy (aka femboy)

Honestly that post was a bit cringe, but the point I was trying to get at is that I was into the series for years, in for the long haul, and even as recently as XRD it seemed like the fanbase for this game was passionate, but niche.

So when Bridget came out for Strive and all of these supposed lore experts and fans who love the series from the bottom of their hearts came out of the woodwork to "set the record straight" - it was frustrating, because there was never that level of attention or fervor about the series for 10+ years beforehand.

It seemed clear to me that it was a bunch of bad-faith morons claiming to be speaking from a place of love so they could do the same song and dance about Japan's conservatism and woke localisation and all the regular shit they like to get up to. Same thing happened with AI: The Somnium Files. Same thing happens every time anything even remotely queer happens in Japanese games.

Not to say "if you dislike Bridget being trans you're not a real fan", because I'm sure there were some longtime fans who were alienated by this. But I feel very strongly that a majority of the people springing up to disregard it for the numerous reasons they did weren't doing it out of love for the game or the franchise, they were doing it because Bridget being explicitly trans was something they could argue about. There were too many "strangers", for lack of a better term, for this to have been a purely organic movement coming out of the fandom imo.
