I never understood deer hunting. Most restaurants dont even have deer on the menu. Whats the point of going out of your way to sit in one of those tree stands for hours waiting to shoot a deer? Maybe you go to the gym or read a book or help out the youth at the local rec center? Feels like theres so many other positive things you can do then just randomly murder innocent deer for meat not many of us even eat

Because the 5 deer(the legal amount in Texas) is enough meat to last a year. Plus hunting IS a good thing if done in moderation as it keeps the population numbers in check. In my area deer doesn't have any predators once they become adults so there would be a massive boom that would effect the ecosystem. So hunting, again in moderation, is a good thing here.

1, most hunters eat what they kill, sometimes giving some to friends/relatives.
2, deer are trash and wreak havoc on their environment when their population gets too big, it's a necessity to hunt them.

Venison tastes delicious. Also we've seen to it that deer don't really have predators near houses.

We butchered all their natural predators (and even when we have programs to fix that, we immediately remove protections upon their success and end up butchering all the predators again because humans are scum) so now if we don't kill them ourselves, they devastate ecosystems.
Also, nice way to save money for those who use their meat and other bits.

Deer isn't something farmed and theres laws in the USA preventing the sell of game from hunters to restaurants directly. That being said, incorporating a middle man would make deer meat economically unfeasible.

You can generally get somewhere in the range of 55-65 pounds of meat off a deer. If you average 4 oz of meat per lunch/supper, that's ~120 days of meat for one person. That number goes down if you have larger portions or try to feed more people, but it's still a pretty considerable amount.

The deer population in my area is so bad that some local institutions hire hunters to cull every year.

For one thing, you need a lot of freezer space. If you're already buying a couple months' worth of meat at a time from Costco or whatever and freezing it, it's a viable option, but if not then you'd basically have to give up on any other frozen food. For another, the actual process of hunting and processing a deer isn't something a lot of people want to do for the sake of having its meat on-hand.

If you want to hunt a deer you should do it with your bear hands.

We are allowed so many deer a year. We keep some in the freezer. I bought some beef burger the other day and realized I haven't had to for well over a year. Deer is much more lean than beef. I am hoping we get a couple when gun season opens. It helps with the grocery bills.

Many people hunt and donate the meat to food banks.

There are some parts of the country that have no predators to keep deer populations in check, so hunting is the only way to keep their numbers in check. Otherwise, there's too many of them and they devastate the vegetation and tend to get diseased.

I wish we'd do some more wolf reintroduction programs. It'd help with the deer and hogs.
