Because Japan has dedicated seiyuu schools and extremely competitive auditioning that results in a much, much higher level of quality in a very objective sense.

Well aside from learning Japanese (No where near fluent mind you >_>) you have to admit that emotion doesn't necessarily come from understanding a language at all. You see someone angry, you know what emotion it is, regardless of language.

i cant speak fer weebs, but fer me it's just purely about how it feels. when it's done "right" (in my brain), i feel the full weight and emotional impact of the lines. certain lines will give shivers, certain ones will evoke a sadness. they don't sound forced or unnatural to me

sekiro is my gold standard. its english dub just reads terrible to me. it's not a conscious decision on my part - it just sounds fake as shit. like very very clearly some bored people reading lines off a page. Yes, even gyoubuu. especially gyoubuu. it's just...idk how to describe it beyond my brain noticing it's fake as shit. really really immersion-shattering

Its true. They just like the background noise of Japanese and assume it must be perfect.

Unless the original production has subtitles, the closest thing to the original intent is to watch without subs, be that in the original language if you can understand it or dubbed if you cant.

Its not the 80s or 90s anymore. Most dubbing is fairly professional at this point.

If you understood Japanese you would hear how over the top Japanese voice acting can be at times. Most English Dub haters haven't heard a dub other than

For me, it's not so much that I know they're better, but that I love the energy they tend to put into their characters. Granted, I'm not a dub hater by any stretch. There are just less great dubs than subs, sadly.

Some English dubs are so bad that it sounds better listening to a language I don't understand lol.

A lot of them are stuck in the 90s/early 00s where most dubs were genuinely inferior.

They never found out that companies eventually stated investing in VAs for dubs and thus the quality increased.

notably, there are a few anime shows where the English dub is considerably better than the original (e.g. DBZ/Baccano/Cowboy Bebop/etc.)

This is the most honest answer, so far. Many weebs cannot actually tell if the voice acting is good, they just like the ''sound'' of the Japanese language and that is more than enough for them. Kinda like how people presume French is ''refined'' just because the language sounds educated and dignified.

Japanese may be a foreign language but it's not a fucking alien language. Listen to enough of it in any context and it's easy to pick up on the different moods and emotions that the actors can give. It's easy to tell when someone is giving a great performance if you actually bother to listen.

I don't know. That's exactly why it's better.

And yet, the weebs are pretending the English voice acting is bad. So which one is it ? You cannot tell me with a straight face that Bioshock, Mass Effect, Horizon Zero Dawn, Halo or, hell, even freaking Call of Duty doesn't have good voice acting. Like I said earlier, this is just the weebs believing that a Japanese actor speaking Japanese is by default ''better'', despite not understanding a single word coming out of his mouth. Meanwhile, we have the Japanese granny playing Goku being one of the worst offender of that trope. By large, both the American and Mexican Goku do a better job.

It's weird, after a while you can tell when playing JRPG dubs what the characters are supposed to sound like in Japanese. Like, in intense moments you can tell the animations are built towards the over-acting of Japanese VAs and the dubs don't put the same energy into it.

Or when a more grounded female character is obviously supposed to be super cutesy.

And when you realize you can notice that, you realize how far you've truly fallen.

I prefer dubs even if I don't really care for the voice mainly because I like to play games while watching shows, and that's a bit of a pain to do if I'm reading subtitles. Although the dub gets unfairly censored sometimes...

I've literally never seen this take. It almost feels like you've just taken the argument that people say subs are better than dubs and decided to just blow it up into "All English voice acting is inferior to Japanese"

Weebs watch Japanese dubs of Disney films because English voice acting is so bad.

I'm not one to dismiss dubs out of hand, I like them too, but yorie underestimating how much you can see emotion without need to understand the language. I think actors can give the character life in a way that's compelling in both English Japanese or other languages.

It lot of it comes from racism too. If you don't grow up around Japanese speakers you start thinking Japanese people sound just like Anime so you don't realize how cartoony/over exaggerated Japanese voice acting can be at times.

The only thing that grinds my gears with a certain small subset of japanese sub elitists is them being hypocrites about the "original japanese language version is automatically superior but whoops I forgot this japanese made work was originally made with english voices" thing.

I have read posts here and there with some of these nerds bashing the english voices for games like devil may cry, resident evil, and even kingdom hearts of all series despite all these series originally only having english voices to begin with, so the "original version is superior" argument goes right out the window since these people just cannot help being hardcore japanophiles.

*Vergil for example did not have a japanese voice until ultimate marvel vs capcom 3, and aside from the anime the games did not have japanese dubbing until devil may cry 4 special edition years later after the original dmc 4 and devil may cry 5. Yet these same elitists will swap over to japanese voices starting with 5 because apparently that is how its supposed to be now, =/ Resident evil did not get japanese voices until I want to say RE5 and RE revelations (funny enough, the original RE1 almost had japanese voices, but mikami decided to cut them out since he thought they sounded lame, lol). The re-release of REmake 1 got japanese voices added to it, but yeah....up till that point it was only ever in english. Viewtiful joe is another japanese made series with english voices*

Hell you even see these same group of dudes do the same thing with north american/western made games in general that has an anime inspired art style. The game river city girls?.....that is made by wayforward, and while the trailer for the first game had a japanese dub-over the game proper was only in english, with a ton of dudes on message boards repeatedly asking the question "how do we swap to japanese voices" when it came out. Of course the same posts asking how to swap to japanese voices started saying the dub for the game sucks not realizing that it wasn't made by technos japan and that a bunch of muricans' made the game the first place.

River city girls 2 actually will officially have japanese voices so I expect for those same derp posts to pop up again, lol.

Dead Rising 1 needs a JP dub so we can pretend it's more fitting.

I prefer to watch/play most things in their native language since that's the creator's original vision. There's exceptions like MGS, though.
