Got a slow cooker and today I got an air fryer and it makes me notice how annoying onloke recipes are.

I am sure it applies to other appliances as well, but slow cookers and air fryer sizes matter when cooking stuff. So why isn't that listed in the recipes? It seems like a pretty big oversight.

I don't know how to cook onloke, seems dangerous.

But ya, I find most online recipes to be trash - I recommend finding old Company's Coming books from the 50s~60s, they have the best recipes.

I'd recommend getting cookbooks specifically for a slow cooker and an air fryer. Regular cookbooks, especially older ones, often don't translate well to these kind of machines. The Joy of Cooking, 8th edition (2006) has just 2-1/2 pages of slow cooker recipes, and even this paltry selection was dropped from the 9th edition.

You might want to look into getting an "instant pot" as well. It's like the opposite of a slow cooker; it lets you cook foods super fast.

Also, NEVER cook beans in a slow cooker. Many types of beans contain phytohaemagglutinin (PHA), a poison that can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. The toxin can be removed by soaking the beans for at least 5 hours then cooking for at least 30 minutes at 212F (100C), or by cooking in a pressure cooker for 45 minutes.. A slow cooker does not get hot enough to destroy the toxin. Canned beans are already fully cooked and are safe to use.

I don't usually have issues following recipes I find online for slow cookers, but then I've got a 6 qt one and that seems to be a pretty common size.

Most online recipes are fine. But I also don't use a slow cooker much since it tends remove a lot of the flavor and texture from your food. Better to just use a dutch oven. Makes the best soup, chili, pot roast, and pasta sauces you can imagine.

Rice cookers are great though, and you can actually make some really great soup in that as well.

So tonight's example is fries in the air fryer.

Ninja's cooking guide said 22 minutes @400F shake "often"

Random website said 10 minutes @400F.

Figured I would do Ninja's and when I shaked the basket at the 6 minute left mark the fries were at the early stages of burning.

The problem with online recipes is that you have to read a whole self indulgent autobiography before you scroll down to what you are there for. "Jump to recipe" is one of the greatest things ever.

It all depends on personal preferences but you can find some good online recipes for a slow cooker. I have mine saved on Pinterest although that site is annoying.

A good idea is to write them down. I had a favorite bookmarked but the whole site was removed so get a grandma recipe box.

Honestly I only use my slow cooker very rarely and mostly for pork or beef roasts.

I just realized a good feature about air fryers...

They are self-contained.

I'm having a bit of a fruit fly problem over here and wish I still had my air fryer, even though it wasn't up to my expectations for 'frying', because it would be free from the buggos

Welp folks, I cooked wings. The thing I bought the air fryer for. And boy howdy, better than any bar, wing place, or whatever I ever had. So tender, so juicy, SOOOO CRISPY and none of the greasiness from oil. Plus total cost of the wings and stuff for the sauce was less than a third of a place to get wings.

Only problem is I don't know how to make dipping sauce and honestly that doesn't interest me right now, but the bottled stuff is not as good as a wing place. But thats not that big of a deal.

This alone make the air fryer worth it.

You shouldn't project onto others. I literally couldn't care less about what any of you people think about me. Y'all have zero impact on my life, so why should I even begin to humor the idea of putting any value in y'all opinion of me?

The response isn't surprising. People who espouse racism generally suffer a lack of empathy, introspection, the ability to self-evaluate, the desire to grow as a person, and a sense of accountability for their thoughts, words, and actions. Ignorance is kinda par for the course. The victim complex is telling, too.

You can probably find a few recipes for good sauces, though that'll take some experimentation. Once you find one you like, you should be able to make a bulk batch and freeze some of it.

That sounds like a waste of freezer space.

Depends on the sauce. If it's something that whips together in 5 minutes, freezing it in bulk doesn't make much sense. If it's a sauce you make by simmering things down for a couple hours and pureeing them, freezing a litre or two (in ~1-cup portions) can potentially save you quite a bit of time over making a new batch every time you run out.

The way I see it, if it's food you know you will eat in the foreseeable future and freezing it will save you time, money, or both, it's a worthwhile use of freezer space. Whether or not it's more worthwhile than the other things in your freezer will, of course, be a personal judgement call based on what you want to keep and how much space you have, but I wouldn't say this is automatically going to be a waste.
