Scary.

EOUL, South Korea (AP) At least 120 people were killed and 100 more were injured as they were crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities in the capital of Seoul, South Korean officials said.

Choi Seong-beom, chief of Seouls Yongsan fire department, said the death toll could rise and that an unspecified number among the injured were in critical conditions following the stampede in the leisure district of Itaewon Saturday night.

Thats incredibly sad and a terrible way to go :(

As a society, we need to stop using the word "stampede" to describe crowd crushes. Stampede implies a group of people running away from something, and trampling over people on the ground. That isn't accurate to a crush, which is too many people crammed into a small space

That is horrifying and sad for what was supposed to be festive.

I never gave it much thought, but maybe this is why I don't like large crowds.

100k people stuffed into a small space. Someone trips and knocks over nearby unaware people, then other people start thinking it might be a knife attack(in this case South Korea/Japan/China doesn't have easy access to guns like us) and panic. They run, stumble, trip and domino effect of people getting stomped on as everyone clears the area. In this instance it was a Halloween party so alcohol is also involved. The rest you can imagine.

Darn, that's tragic. Rest in peace.

Apparently this all happened because there was word a celebrity would be at a bar, so they all just rushed towards it without any regard for human life.

Absolutely insane.

When enough people are crowded into a space the crowd starts to basically obey fluid physics, where a push at the back of the crowd pushes literally everybody else forward. What happens when there is no more room forward for people to be pushed? Either people become so compressed that they cant breathe and suffocate on their feet, or someone eventually falls, creating a chain reaction of falls and burying people under so many bodies that they cant breathe. The scary part about it is that people in the back of the crowd trying to move forward have basically no way of knowing what theyre causing further ahead in the crowd, and by the time you realize its starting to happen around you, its basically too late to get out.

I don't know. I definitely see where you're coming from about crowd flow and being pushed by the crowd, but there is definitely a shitty human element involved, too.

I remember at an MLB baseball game a while back, there was somewhat of a bottleneck that caused a close crowd, traveling in opposite directions. Well, a cart was trying to come through so me and a group of people moved to the side so the cart could pass. This effectively stopped the flow of traffic going in our direction. Some guy behind us who didn't see the cart starting pushing and cursing. "Why are we stopped. Keep moving!" We were literally stopped for just a few seconds and it caused him to have this outburst. Even after he saw the cart and realized his mistake, the asshole didn't admit any wrongdoing on his part.

People are shitty. Look at how many people unnecessarily tailgate on the freeway. There is definitely a human element to this that could at least better prevent these kind of unnecessary tragedies from happening.
