Japan has alot of cultural flaw but giving up bus seats to elderly and women is one thing I highly respect.

The fare argument is dumb. Pregnant ladies along with the elderly should sit on the bus so they don't risk falling over. They're at greater risk of harm if they did. It's not because of being tired.

If you sit near the front of a bus you're more likely to have to give up your seat too. Go near the back if you don't want to risk this scenario.

Hey, what if some disabled person got disabled because of their own actions?

It's a year old and a half article, but I'll try my best to summarize the article. Basically it all started when a guy posts on Reddit asking if he was the asshole for not giving up his seat. He says that he works on his feet all day and has to walk from the bus stop home so he gets very tired. A pregnant women gets on the bus and since he was the closets tries to ask the guy if she could get the spot. Guy says no because he's tired and the pregnant women made her decision to have a baby. He then goes on about how contraception and abortions are free in this country and it's her fault for not choosing to do any of that. She basically cries how she's a single pregnant mother. Then another man, elderly, sees the exchange and trades spots with pregnant mother. As they were in the progress to trade places, the bus driver had to slam on his brakes and both the pregnant mother and elderly man fall/trip over and start calling the guy a bunch of names. He basically turns his head to try to ignore them (he had his headphones on). So basically the majority of reddit agreed that the guy was an asshole.

They're still in places that have paid parking.

Like you get this is a health and safety thing right? You still don't care if an elderly person or pregnant woman got injured because you didn't give up your seat near the door to enter and exit the bus? On top of that these people need to sit near the door so they aren't holding up the bus when they need to leave. This is pretty normal etiquette and is often signed within the bus itself.

Did this bus only have 1 seat or something? I'm not sure why he is taking all the heat aside from being a douchebag about the whole situation.

It's probably better for the baby if the mother gets to sit though.

No, but if he had just moved the whole thing would have been avoided. Where I live the front section of the bus is reserved for people that are pregnant, elderly, in wheelchairs or have reduced mobility and you don't have a choice about giving up your seat if a situation arises where one of those people gets on a crowded bus.

Witnessing the exchange, another man on the bus offered his seat to the pregnant woman, calling the man a "worthless punk".

"As they were trading seats, the bus driver had to slam on the brakes for whatever reason, and the pregnant lady and the old man both fell. They started yelling at me, calling me all sorts of nasty names, but I just looked the other way and ignored it," he continued.

This sounds more like a cry for reddit attention than reality but who knows

It's on the bus company to have enough seats for everyone. If I'm paying for transportation, I have every right to remain seated.

They usually are reserved but not enforced. You can sit there but if someone needs it more you're expected to move.

They had better start clearly marking those seats and consistently enforcing the rules. Again, it's not on me as a paying customer to manage their lack of appropriate accommodations.

All public transportation buses should have seats near the door marked to give up your seat for the elderly, pregnant and disabled yes. It shouldn't need to be spelled out like this but we seem to have people who don't want to participate in being part of a cooperative society without rules telling them exactly how to do so.

Unfortunately, public transport relies on the public not being assholes and that's unavoidable. But you can certainly do your part as an individual on a bus. It is common etiquette to give up your seat near the door/exit (which is also why you should aim to sit elsewhere to begin with) if an elderly, pregnant or injured is otherwise standing. Not only does it benefit them but it means slower people can get off the bus quicker which benefits everyone. It's called 'public' transport for a reason.

I can't help but wonder how many of the Bus Karens itt who want the pregnant lady to sit on the floor have even been on a bus before
