I don't think I gave my opinion on this matter, but if it were me I would obviously have given up the seat. I've done it multiple times when I used to work in DTLA. I had scene several times when a person is sitting in those designated spots but refuse to get off them for disabled/elderly person. When that happens there's usually someone else that offers their seat (most of the time it's me because I never get the chance to sit in the back row). I think it's basically common etiquette to do that because it takes longer for a elderly/disabled person to get off a bus than a normal person. The faster they move the faster the people behind them can also get off as well.

Japan has alot of cultural flaw but giving up bus seats to elderly and women is one thing I highly respect.

When I was in Japan (Tokyo), I was with one of my female friends and we were sitting down. An old guy came on and no one got up. I got up (Being from London and all) and gave it to him. My friend got up with me and she seemed kinda surprised?

Not sure what the culture is surrounding that in Japan, but I didn't really see people giving their chairs to others in Tokyo at least. I asked my friend that and she said she doesn't personally do it. Maybe its because she's female, since many females here in London don't do the same. The younger ones at least.

Anyone else weigh in here?

He is sitting near the door. Which is evident by him saying he was the 'closest' and that an elderly man sat near him.

It's even possible that depending on the city he'd be specifically sitting in the seats reserved for people like this.

Usually you board from the front and even if not the area between the two doors is where you have seats reserved for the elderly, pregnant and other people who need assistance.

Again this is so they can disembark quickly.

Yes, normally one door at the front for entering, and another in the middle/back for exiting. People aren't allowed to enter through the exiting door.

1. How would the bus driver know you have paid for your fare if you enter in the middle? They often don't even open this door if nobody is exiting.
2. More people exit from the middle so you are potentially blocking people if you try enter there
3. Do you know what they call people who don't show common courtesy? Assholes.

Not all buses require fare? The last one I took was free because they were shuttling people who had to take a detour due to the subway being shut down between those streets.

For that matter, a lot of people skip fare on subways too.

And people who publicly raise a stink over minor infractions are seen as loud, obnoxious assholes too.

In my country, the bus does not stop if there are no seats left.

In my city, its the same. They dont allow people to stand. But certain places have way too many people to transport, and allow standing tk get them all to where they need to go

This is true. That said, they also would want you leaving from the middle door in those cases if you can, so people can still load in the front. Meaning her moving closer to the middle might not have been so bad depending on the case The only people who usually board the middle are usually people in wheelchairs

That's the risk you take when you get on an almost full bus and sit in that area (which would also mean he was on the bus for less time on top of that).
