Welcome to my current top 52 of Scarlet's DC TTRPG!

This won't exactly be like the others topics. I'm not a good writer or have the best vocabulary or memory to talk about things, so I'm just gonna say what I like or love about these characters and leave it at that! If you got a problem with that, well you can SHOVE IT!

But first, lemme talk a little about my OWN character, Data 7... otherwise known as Artemis The Dog.

I'm one of the three people who stuck with their character going into campaign two. I enjoyed playing Artemis so much that I wanted to continue, I also didn't have faith in myself playing someone completely new so it was easier on my anxiety as well. I didn't want to play him exactly the same way though and wanted to breathe some new life into the character so I wasn't just retreading the same path, so in between campaigns I thought up some ways to change things up. That's how we get to Data 7.

But going back to Artemis...

In short, he's a Pomeranian mix that was taken at a very young age and experimented on by the Big Bully Kirk Langstrom, otherwise known as Man-Bat. His first memories are only that of being in a cage and being tortured and worked on. He had a few allies whilst there... Isis The Telepathic Cat, Patch The Rat, Nina The Human Turned Water Creatureish and a few other unnamed animals that wouldn't see the light of day. This is how we get to Artemis' meta abilities though. As I wanted Artemis to be able to converse with humans, the ability to talk was one of the things that Man-Bat had forced onto the poor doggo, and the other was his size manipulation abilities. At the start, these weren't too crazy, Artemis could simply become about wolf sized, though that is still pretty scary for a Pomeranian, but over time he would find his abilities getting stronger and stronger and able to grow to even larger sizes.

Size-Manip has always been a fun thing for me. I quite enjoy the Ant-Man movies and idea around the power in general. It's very enjoyable to me to think how my character may interact with the environment or other characters at increased or later on (Campaign 2) decreased sizes. I'm a very visual and physical thinker, so imagining my big doggo getting stuck in places, or causing chaos in all sorts of scenarios is something I enjoy a lot!

Getting back to Artemis. Eventually he was able to escape Man-Bat's LAB and found himself on the streets of Gotham briefly. He would eventually be found and recruited to... CAMPAIGN 1. And that's how his, and the rest of our PC's stories would begin. Artemis still had the goal of rescuing the family he had left behind in Kirk's clutches, but he first had to gain the trust and support of HUMANS (and alien), and convince them that they were worth saving.

Due to his being tortured and overall LESS THAN GOOD treatment while growing up as a pup, he's instinctually been cautious of humans. Untrusting and afraid to let them too close. Over Campaign 1 he'd go through plenty of hardships but slowly learn to trust the two teams of (The Greensleeves and JLNML).

Artemis is stubborn and believes his way is always the right way... for the most part. He's very in your face and doesn't respect boundaries (like a dog). But he was also generally very peppy and cheery.

For myself, I'm really not the smartest or have a good memory. Scar presents campaigns where you really need to keep track of what's going on, who's who and all that. And that's one of my biggest weaknesses so I just do my best to provide humor and comedy when and where I can and do my best in other regards. It's also why I think Artemis is such a really good fit for me. He's a lot like myself in many ways and I'm able to use my strengths and his strengths effectively.

Getting back to Campaign 1. I'll go over briefly important events for Artie since others have done a much better job at describing the actual campaign itself.

Patch was the first to escape Man-Bat, he sought out Artemis and gave him goodish directions to find where Isis and Nina were being held.

With the help of the rest of the Greensleeves, Artemis was able to rescue Isis and Nina! Everyone's happy!

Well... except Nina, she had to stay in a tub. She can't be out of water due to the experiments done on her. It's sad. But we had a TV and movies for her to watch. Like Air Bud and Air Bud 2. She loved it.

Artemis eventually found out who his ACTUAL Mom was. She was a Pomeranian named Sadie and was owned by the one and only Tiger Shark.

Tiger Shark is this... no good evil motherfucker and is overall JUST CREEPY, saying things like Artemis is his son. Apparently Sadie, his mom, was trained by him to be an ATTACK dog. She was a BADDIE as well! Oh no!... but... she had already passed away. Hearing from Tiger Shark, she had lived to a decently old age and had passed peacefully.

Apparently she got it on with some rando dog whilst her and Tiger Shark weren't in Gotham so uh... Artemis and myself really have no idea if Artemis' REAL dad exists or is alive or if he has any actual siblings. I feel like there was more to this and I've forgotten. I think I was able to gather a bit more from Oracle on the situation, but oh well!

With Sadie out of the picture, Artemis really didn't have any family to speak of. He had Isis, Patch and Nina... but it wasn't exactly what he was looking for.

ENTER REX THE WONDER DOG.

When we were in the Patchwork territory, Artemis was granted a MAGIC CROWN as a gift from Bat-Mite. It was able to summon any named animal for a minute once a day. Artemis, at the time, had the superbuddy of ANIMAL MAN and one of the first things he did after getting out of the Patchwork was to go to Oracle to have him called up so that he could ask about many different types of animals.

Artemis would summon characters like Teekl... Jumpa... Flicka... Detective Chimp... Streaky The Supercat... but one of his earlier summons would be Rex. At first Rex would be summoned at very inconvenient times... but as Rex was another WHITE DOG, and had a very fatherly presence to him... Artemis quickly started to insert himself into that equation.

After many more 1 minute sessions, Artemis, with Patch's help, would ask Rex if he could be his Pappa! And that's all she wrote, in those regards. You could only really do so much in a minute each day though... so their relationship wasn't the strongest... but it was something Artemis desperately needed.

Eventually we would help Nina as well, with Animal Man's help of course, and Nina no longer had to watch Air Bud 2.

Things would slowly wrap up in No Man's Land, all of our PCs going in their own directions, wanting to pursue their own goals and dreams. Nina would head off with Trish and Alexander Fields the Piano-Man.

Artemis would be one of the first to leave Gotham though, with Patch and Isis. He'd seek out Buddy "The Animal Man" and live under his porch for about half a year! Good times were had...!

Artemis would go on a few adventures with Buddy and learn the ways of a Superhero, but he wasn't exactly one himself.

He wanted to live on his own, do what HE wanted to and make his own decisions. He would pack up and head off with Isis and Patch. He'd buy a small place for himself, Isis and Patch and they'd have a wonderful life together...!

Artemis was still very stubborn and set in his ways. He still harbored the hate for animal testing and things of the like. His approach on things would be, Smash and kill... then maybe ask questions after... and it would get him, and his family, into a bunch of trouble.

This was my set up for Campaign 2 Artemis... or rather, Data 7.

He had bitten off more than he could chew and one of the organizations he had attacked had wanted revenge on the pup. So they went and destroyed what he loved.

HIVE struck back and stole Isis away out from under Artemis' nose. And they blew up his house too!

Patch had had enough though. He was too scared and frustrated with Artemis' stubbornness that would lose them Isis and he would run off, leaving Artemis on his own.

Artemis would set himself upon the streets of Denver, even making a name for himself as the GHOST OF DENVER. He'd given himself the name, Data 7, wanting to rid himself of the name Artemis, the dog who messed up everything for his family. He hated that dog, he didn't want to be Artemis anymore, and so he wasn't.

After terrorizing the streets of Denver for a time, he'd be scooped up into this mess and eventually placed into a tube where we enter Campaign 2.

Over the course of the last couple years in Campaign 2, Data 7 started out super rough around the edges, hating everything and everyone... but most of all, himself. He's thus been able to slowly work his way back... towards Artemis. Could he be the happy dog he once was?... Or maybe being Data 7 is better for everyone and himself?

Data 7 and Artemis' story isn't the most complicated nor does it have too much relevance to the greater scheme of things, but I've really enjoyed telling his tale with Scar as well as the rest of our party members.

And while I don't feel like Data 7 is the star of this greater story that's being told here, maybe that's okay. He's just a dog trying to learn what he is, how he is, why he is, and most importantly who he is.

AND NOW IT'S TIME TO GET INTO THE CHARACTERS THAT I LIKE THE MOST, OKAY? THESE WRITE UPS WILL NOT BE GOOD. THERE WILL BE LOTS OF ANIMAL CHARACTERS AND THATS OKAY. HOPE YOU ENJOY! Oh yeah I get a ton of art commissions of Artemis AND Patch because I love them lots.

Tanakata Z

It's TANAKATA ZZZZZZZZ

His name is one of my favorite things to say, it's like I'm watching an episode of Dragon Ball or something.

Anyways, this character showed up in one of our more recent missions and left a pretty good impression on me!

We were heading out into space, minding our own business, checkin up on this big brained dude that was up to no good... and when we got there, it was kind of just a big ol mess. Tanakata Z, along with a bunch of other Green Lanterns were being mind controlled and almost immediately we were thrust into a fight to beat up the mind controlly guy.

Battle was pretty fun! Had a lot of shenanigans... but overall wasn't too difficult... or take too long...

And this was at the start of the session... so once that was taken care of... we quickly found that ONE of the Green Lanterns had been MURDERED. It was an elephant Lantern.

I don't like elephants, but I still felt bad.

We couldn't exactly figure out why or how this Lantern had been murdered though, and we were about to set off, but a few of the PCs wanted to chat with the Lanterns first, maybe go over what had gone down here.

Data 7 went and had a talk with Tanakata Z before they were to return back to Oa... and they discussed getting revenge on who had done this terrible deed. Data 7 promised that he'd help him out to find the killer and get JUSTICE.

Tanakata Z was good friends with the elephant after all.

Then.

Just as we were about to head back. KABLAMO! One of our new Lantern friends was BLASTED through the head with a BEAM!

He was talking a lot so maybe that's why they targeted him first. But before we knew it, we were set upon by RED LANTERNS.

I like Red Lanterns... but they were kind of being huge bullies, y'know, killing our Green Lanterns friends and everything.

And they didn't stop with one, they killed a bunch of others as they started popping up.

Tanakata Z was about to give his last stand and defend against them while we were going to escape.

But I'm (And Data 7) are stubborn. Data 7 wasn't about let Tanakata Z get killed.

Tanakata Z had his arm blasted/melted off by red goopies, but Data 7 was able to grab and hull the rest of his unconscious form away, saving his life.

What then happened was a BUNCH of stuff where we are escaping from the Red Lanterns... finding ourselves almost dying multiple times... but never once did Data 7 let go of Tanakata Z. He wasn't about to let his new buddy just die like that!

Eventually we were able to convince one of the rings from one of the deceased Green Lanterns to give the unconscious form of Tanakata Z a lift back to Oa while we tried to deal with the rest of the Red Lanterns that had shown up... but perhaps that is a tale for another day.

Tanakata Z is currently held up in Oa's medical bay where Spirit awaits his awakening. What all went down with the Red Lanterns is sorta supposed to be hush hush so Spirit might have to get him to shut his face for awhile, but I can't imagine Tanakata Z wanting to stay in one place after knowing what happened to his friends.

He'll want revenge... and maybe he'll be happy Data 7 saved his big ol booty. At least I hope so!

Wow, I would NEVER have guessed Tanakata in a million years. Glad he struck a chord with you! I really thought that entire session was a ton of fun. I could feel the tension in the party.

Tanakata Z now has a crab arm. But he has not awoken to see it yet...

#52: Hector The Lion

As Hector has been on a list before, a lot of his story has already been told.

When Scar first introduced Hector in Campaign 1, I was like... alright, he's pretty cool, but as I'm not the biggest fan of lions I'm like, "we'll keep it at that"

Hector has been a lot of fun throughout both campaigns though and I know Scar is ever so happy when he gets to voice the proud lion.

The Lamumba session was pretty special in a lot of ways. We had HEARD Hector had been killed, but there was always a little something in the back of my head telling me that he wasn't truly gone. Scar loved to play Hector after all! And whilst he doesn't have his lion form anymore, his spirit lives on in the zodiac crystal.

And thank goodness it has because I don't think anyone else would have been able to hold Catman back from his anger once he found out what Deadshot did, or claimed to. How could you argue with the sweet, logical voice of Hector!?

I for one think it was a really cool idea. The scene with Hector up in the stars, while VERY similar to a certain Disney movie we all know, was a very sweet touch and I think a unique way to still have Hector around, but still make sure the impact of Catman losing his pride still be there in full force.

I (As Data 7)was planning on bringing his crystal around everywhere, to have him pipe in sometimes, ala Starsa. But uh... I think Saoirse stole the crystal from me and stored it in her room or something. Lush and Saoirse steal things a lot... it's unfair, they are bullies.

I did not!

I think Hector has been hanging out with Starsa? I don't think his location is currently defined. Otherwise, Patch has him.

Also, who are you to call people bullies? Data 7 just snuck up on Flicks and sucker punched him in the jaw!

And the idea that you could use the power to help out in other ways but it would mean sacrificing that days interaction is a really tough added layer.

#51: Dex'Starr

He's finally here! Look at this good kitty!

We very recently met up with the Red Lanterns and got to hear all about them, and that included our good boi Dex'Starr.

I'm not familiar with much any of DC, so a ton of the stuff that Scar presents to us is brand new to me.

Dex'Starr though I AM a little familiar with, so even though he told his story in kitty speak, I knew exactly what had happened and how things went down for the little guy.

We actually had a brief encounter with Dex'Starr going back into the first campaign when we were in the Patchwork Territory. We got to experience a LITTLE bit of the Blackest Night and lemme tell you, it wasn't pretty.

I had my Crown though and I forget exactly how I learned OF Dex'Starr, but I knew I wanted to summon him to help us, as a Red Lantern would be very useful against these Black Lanterns that were surrounding us.

Another thing to note is that we had an item called a DIAL H, which allows you to change into a superhero of sorts (I forget if it was limited to heros?), anyways, the catch with the item was that you had to dial in a 5 letter word into it and it would transform you into that character for a few minutes.

So what was probably one of our most scariest combats, also turned into one of the most fun! At least for me.

I summoned Dex'Starr with my Crown... and then also turned into him with the word "Kitty".

So there was two Dex'Starrs on the map at one point and we were KICKING ASS! Being able to use the energy projections as well as BLOOD VOMIT was incredibly fun and I doubt we'd have made it out in one piece if we didn't have all the Dex'Starr action.

I tried to charm the Dex'Starr AS Dex'Starr... but uh... it didn't go over so well and he ended up running off before we could chat... not that we had the time to sit around and talk though.

Once we had dealt with the Black Lanterns, we zoomed our way out of the area and Artemis no longer existed as Dex'Starr... though he would always remember the memories of being him.

This actually spurred a neat little character arc for Artemis and put him down the route of being obsessed with Lanterns and... the rings in general. He remembered the rage, and anger that Dex'Starr harbored, even though he was only him for a limited time. And he remembered the powerful ring that was looped around his tail.

He'd have talks later with PCs about Dex'Starr, about that rage... but most characters would dismiss him, especially those who weren't in the Patchwork. Because... Red Lanterns didn't exist yet in our current time. It's hard to believe a young excitable dog spewing nonsense about zombie lanterns and a red cat lantern that could vomit blood over its enemies.

And so that's how it was left... for the most part. Artemis would bring up Dex'Starr occasionally but most wouldn't believe him. He wouldn't forget what it was like though.

And then...

We get to just a couple weeks ago when we finally get to meet the kitty in REAL TIME! He's even got a mission where he wants to take down the grid and get revenge on those terrible terrible humans that made him so angry.

And I'll do everything I can to help him with that, because he's a good kitty! I can see Dex'Starr going higher and higher on my list, but as we've just met him for realizes and haven't had too much content with him yet, he just sneaks onto the list!

It was pretty cool and a nice way to organically slow burn a story. Rex and Artemis was very enjoyable in campaign 1. I'm sure you'll hear more about campaign 2 as things go!

The best use of the crown though was solving a puzzle by bringing in Detective Chimp... who in a minute told the team where the item they were looking for was and it was a place they already went, except they didn't go inside to check. This was either right before or right after also finding one of these items out of sequence. It was a hell of a ride to watch.

Dex-Starr is such a good kitty. And Hector is the best. Great start so far
