I'd say mainly Pokemon is the black sheep here. Most of their other franchises do seem to innovate and aren't afraid of being remotely challenging.

Playing the game differently is literally hacking to them? Somehow I'm not surprised.

TPC is incredibly protective of its IP. Officially acknowledging a fan name like "nuzlocke" could open a grey area for trademark reasons.

Also I agree and disagree here. TPC has tons of spinoff games, and tries new things each generation. But they have a specific style and design philosophy that they try to stick to or risk having a game be too different from the series to be considered a part of it.

To say Pokemon hasn't innovated at all would be a lie, just look at Legends as evidence of that.

But I do think they keep too tight a leash around their new ideas, instead of letting them reach higher potential (ie. Mega Evolutions)

From the follow up tweets it's sounds more like TPC wasn't aware what it was and thought it was something like a randomized game (which does involve a rom hack).

The problem here then comes from them not asking for elaboration and instead getting so mad they were afraid of getting fired. And it's apparently a regular occurrence since other channels connected to TPC were cut off if they had nuzlocke videos.

I'm under the impression all the innovations comes from the top. The execs have new ideas, then the team tries to implement them with little to no room for proposing their own ideas. It's a Japanese business culture thing.

They're probably former Treehouse staff, or some other similar more niche Nintendo team.

They're former NoA marketing employees, Kit & Krysta.

"On the same level" probably means they view nuzlockes as tainting (their idea of) the integrity of the brand.

To companies, their franchise isn't a form of art of entertainment, it's just a name. It's why WB said Catwoman's not allowed to take Batman to flavor town with her pussy, because "superheroes don't go muff diving". They don't give a fuck that giving your partner a mouthie is just something loving adult couples do, they care that a multi-gadrillion dollar trademark might look bad if he's got his tongue wrapped around Selina's-

well anyway, with Pokemon the head honchos probably think of the idea of "perma death" in Pokemon as an anathema. Pokemon don't die (except all the times that they do), the players Pokemon live forever because they're your best friend that you're going to spend all your parents money on. Don't feel sad! Your charmander wasn't bisected by Aegislash! He's just...fainted! And he likes fighting! Just take your best pal to the free hospital because there are no bad vibes in PokeLand!

Pokemon has been business for over 30 years idk why gamers would be offended or surprised Nintendo is outright against any ideas for their own IP.

Its not Nintendo.

I just recently played a hack where they made it a roguelike. You start with one poke, get shit and if you wipe or finish the run, you start back from just your starter but can buy stuff that carries on to the rest of your playthroughs. Lots of quality of life features, stuff up to gen 8 despite using FireRed as the base rom, etc. Crazy how ambitious rom hackers are these days
