With leaked confirmation that one of the upcoming games is set in Japan, I'll finally be giving this series a shot, but I'd like to give at least one of them a try before that.

I have PS+ so the entire catalog is laid bare before me.

I hear AC4 is the way to go, but I'm potentially more interested in when they supposedly become more Dark Soulsy after that.

Play 2. Im not sure if it holds up still but I loved it at the time and Im not sure you can go backwards with the series (4 then 2) and still enjoy the earlier games.

2 absolutely, then follow it with Brotherhood and Revelations if you enjoy Ezio. 4, Origins and Odyssey are also tremendous games.

if you're only going to play one you might as well just wait for this one you actually want to play

AC2 is the classic one, but the series has changed a lot since then

Ghost of Tsushima

(Honestly just pick a setting that you find interesting and roll with it. I actually really like Freedom Cry as it gives you a good taste of what the series is about without feeling too bloated.)

I think Ghost of Tsushima is a better answer than 4, really.

AC2 and the rest of the Ezio trilogy if you like him. Best of the classic style games.

Can't really speak on the newer ones, I got burned out on the series by Unity and eventually went back to it and greatly enjoyed Origins...then when I started Odyssey I just couldn't do another huge ass game like that at the time. One day maybe.

2 and 4 are the best.

I feel like the modern ones are too similar to each other that it's probably best to just play the new one if that interests you.

Although Origins on changes the series drastically so that'd be where to start if you wanted to kinda get a feel for the series as it is now

The best ones are 2, Brotherhood, Black Flag, and Odyssey though.

But Ghosts of Tsushima is a better game in a very similar vein than all of them.

These are the perfect three to get a full dose of the entire series, with each subsequent one having a little bit of the thing from the one before it.

2 to get your fix of the traditional ones.

IV to get your fix of the captain a ship ones.

Odyssey to get your fix of Ancient Greece Witcher 3 of Mordor.

Pick which one sounds more must play to your tastes.

I think Tony is right. If you want a taste of the series, 2 for the classic style, Black Flag for the boats, Odyssey for the RPGs. If youre interested in the lore you need Brotherhood and unfortunately 3 in there as well, along with probably the other two RPGs.

As someone who is currently marathoning the whole series(up to Unity currently)-

But if I had to pick-
AC 2, AC 2:Brotherhood, AC4

AC1 sucked even when it came out and it sucks even more now
AC 2 Revelations is pointless but can be enjoyed if you liked the other 2 games
AC 3 is bad
Liberation is fun but not a "must play". Freedom's Cry and Rogue are just Black Flag expansions
Unity is probably the second worst game in the series after the original

I also played the Chronicles games but lol at spin offs being a must play
(Still debating with myself if I should try Bloodlines)

My two cents was going to be 2. I don't know the series as well as some others in here, but if the consensus lies towards 2 from them as well I feel alright with parting with my limited knowledge.
