Might be Strider (2014) or Iconoclasts?

I havent played a ton of Metroidvanias outside of the Metroid series, but I really enjoyed both of those.

I mean that was just my personal decision. I made that choice because I see HK mentioned A LOT in these discussions. Doesn't necessarily mean most people would have listed it if I had only excluded Metroid or Castlevania. Perhaps it was even a mistake on my part.

It's one of the most popular games in the genre, if not the most. I'm sure it's also outsold most Castlevania and Metroid titles(the MV one's anyway) by now. To answer the topic title though Aeterna Noctis remains my 2nd most favorite MV while Hollow Knight's at the top. I still can't decide if I like Metroid Dread or Super Metroid more, but those and then maybe Prime to top off my list.

I see this question a lot on the Metroidvania subreddit, with the same criteria even, but my answers change a bit every time <_<

I played Dread immediately after completing Super when Dread released. I felt like Dread was the better Metroidvania, but got some points deducted by me because the bosses and cutscenes were annoying. If they are close to even in quality, I would probably pick Super most of the time, because beating it takes about half as long as Dread.

I played Metroid Prime when it first came out, and the original Metroid like 10 years ago, but otherwise Metroid was a big blind spot for me. I played the through Super Metroid, Samus Returns (3DS), Fusion, and Dread over the last several months for the first time.

Id say it was close between Super and Dread, but Id give Super the slight nod. Which is incredible, since its nearly a 30 year game.

Ender Lilies is really good
Ori and the Blind Forest still holds up really well
Valdis Story is almost never mentioned, but had the best combat in any metroidvania I've ever played.
