Shouldn't this be undergirded by the idea that private alternatives are in shorter supply and can charge more and as a result have more resources? If there were only private options I honestly don't see the situation being that much better. There would be a lower floor of quality because there wouldn't be a free option.

There would just be budget options that would be the new public school. Literally nothing would change.

Being serious this time, not true, at least in my experiences in Florida. Even the decent public schools were being eroded as far back as ten years ago. There was a huge push for charter schools, and a big wall to expanding and fixing public schools. My last year of high school my school was over capacity by 800 students, and understaffed because a lot of the older teachers saw the writing on the wall and got the fuck out before they drowned. This was in the suburbs.

The people are not supporting these schools. They keep voting for the same people who keep eroding them.

There'd be cheap but less good options, if they aren't regulated out of existence by good intentions or plain old regulatory capture.

So what is the point of making it capitalist if it just has the same result?

Yes, exactly.
In either case it has to be wanted by the people ultimately paying for it, or it will eventually become extinct. This is true of essentially anything, in any economic system.

Idk. Either way re:the op, just having a BA is a ridiculous qualification for a teacher.

I get this has likely been in the pipeline for a while, but GOP literally had bad press with vets last week.

Ok, but how are we going to improve education in cities and poor areas by removing the public option.

How would fully privatizing America help them? It wouldn't even help the middle class, just rich people that want to hold onto even more money.

Who's advocating removing the public option?
All that changes in the post #58/59 scenario is that the terrible option directly costs money.

Just accept that the public option is going to be generally the worst, and try to work out ways to make it not be so terrible with the resources available. Gentrification is one obvious way to make poor areas not be so poor.

My Dad taught masters computer science and my Brother retired and taught art at a college in Seattle. All 3 of us are vets.

I still don't think anyone should be able to just waltz in to a teaching position without any vetting. His statement leaves too many holes open.

Also is he literally saying replace them? Or just incentivising more people to teach.

I'd imagine it's a little of both, since iirc natural attrition is taking a lot of older teachers out, and with how shitty teachers are paid in this state and the immense liability they are under due to legislation (Don't Say Gay) no one is particularly lining up to take those jobs.

It's a combination of shitty administration making the job so intolerable that no one wants the job, and the people who probably can't get out fast enough. It's not really replacement if you just make people not want to be there.

There'd probably be a market for a three-month "crashcourse" teaching certificate, if it were allowed.

I'll add to my position that I don't think that (qualified, certified, licensed) veterans can't/shouldn't be teachers.

But knowing conservatives like DeSantis the goal is to lower the standard for teaching and to drive away quality teachers by continuing to undervalue their education and experience.

I also think this is weaponizing veterans. The right can hype this up as being "pro-vet" while continuing to strip them of much needed (and well deserved) benefits and aid, while demonizing any critic as being anti-veteran and anti-American,

There was a story last year or so about Omaha (I think) hiring teachers that went through very short crash courses which led to disastrous grades/results in the schools they were placed in (often the most demanding schools).

Also you never answered why you thought putting undertrained teachers in public schools *wouldn't* make them worse?

There's clearly a teacher shortage, or bringing in vets to cover the gap wouldn't need to be an option.
https://news.yahoo.com/report-breaks-down-florida-teacher-033815389.html
If you can't get employees in the door, your only real options are to pay more, or find cheaper labor. Looks like Florida is doing the "both" option:
About $800 million was allocated to raise Floridas minimum teacher pay and to boost the salary of veteran teachers, meaning the average starting salary will be at least $47,000, and Florida will have the ninth-highest average starting salary in the nation.
