A Texas pedophile died this week after drinking a mysterious liquid from a water bottle as a jury found him guilty of child sexual assault, officials said. Edward Leclair, 57, was on trial in Denton, Texas, for five counts of sexual abuse and had been free on bond until the verdict Thursday. As these verdicts were being read, he chugged a bottle of water he had at [the] counsel table, Denton County Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck told CNN Friday, adding the liquid seemed cloudy. Our investigator noticed him chug the water, Beck said. He told the bailiff he might want to go check on him. The bailiff did. He was unconscious in the holding cell.

Shortly after entering the holdover cell, he started vomiting, and emergency services were called, Leclairs defense attorney, Mike Howard said. Howard said Leclair had taken a long drink from a water bottle while listening to the verdict, but the attorney did not know what was in the bottle. Medics tried to revive Leclair. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. An autopsy was ordered, and the cause of death is listed as pending.

Pretty fucked up case. Read about it earlier. Apparently the dude answered her personal ad on craigslist. After the first time she told him her age, 14, and he continued seeing her. Dude's wife found out, approached the girl, told the girl the husband was grooming her. Then attempted to become her pimp? Then the husband shut that down, continued seeing the girl, and then the cops got involved.

Seemed super strange.

One less child predator to worry about, a good day for all.

Didn't some guy also do this during a trial or hearing a couple of years ago? >_>

Everybody deserves the same due process, even if you don't like them.

Most of the replies in this topic are disgusting. This man was a sexual deviant and no doubt did terrible things, but that doesn't make it OK to cheer on suicide, or to lament this person won't himself be sexually abused now that he is dead. Just because a person did wrong--even perhaps the worst wrong--doesn't somehow make their rape or suicide that is considered necessary because of the way we treat prisoners good.

In a humane, advanced society, prison should be about rehabilitation and restitution, not torture, violence, or slavery. Meanness in the justice system doesn't deter crime or decrease recidivism. And there are always mistakes: people have been convicted and served out long sentences for everything from theft to murder to child abuse and later be found to not have been guilty. You can't take back what happened to those folks.

CE has gotten very blood thirsty when it comes to general crime now-a-days. It's always been blood thirsty when it comes to any form of underage sex or pedophilia, though.

The judge made the same decision about safety and flight risk, presumably, that they make with every case. You just don't like the outcome.

Sure, but not for any reason that's currently in your mind. You don't have nearly as much knowledge about the case as the judge. You are deciding that the judge is wrong because you don't like the defendant.

And further, given that the guy didn't commit any more crimes, and certainly didn't try to escape, it seems that the judge was, well, correct.

i couldn't care about the defendant one way or another. that charge alone along with other shit like rape, murder etc. should not give any defendants the ability to roam free in an ongoing trial.

Do you understand the purpose of remand?

It's not just because you don't like the defendant (which, by the way, is what you expressed above).

Like, shit's important to be careful about. You don't want to be imprisoning people for long periods of time before their trial without really good reason. Turns out that this could be considered unconstitutional!

if you have to ask why then why arrest them in the first place then? just ask them nicely to show up for the arraignment and not imprison them until after sentencing.

Agreed. Bail is an inherently classist concept, and we should do away with it.

dunno. i still think certain charges should not allow people to roam free just because the person in question has the money not to mention who even decides how much money?

I'm saying do away with bail, only have remand in extreme cases where there's risk of further crimes being committed or escape.

In other words, just don't imprison people until they've had their due process, unless they pose an actual risk (which was not this case, as we've already established).
