Geez, we're kicking off the contest season with some heavy shit. Obsolescence, nuclear devastation, orphanhood, to list a very tame few. But 'cartoons are for kids', remember.

That does remind me of a funny story about Brave Little Toaster. The film was admitted to Sundance and ultimately lost the grand jury prize. Before the ceremony, however, the judges approached director Jerry Rees to inform him that Toaster was the best in show, but they feared giving the prize to an animated film would damage Sundance's reputation. Some things never change, eh?

Actually just revisited Toaster a month or so ago after years and years and it's still great! Summer Wars is also pretty good, and I would be lying if I said nostalgia factor didn't help out Toaster a liiiiiittle bit here, but I feel good with the vote regardless since my feelings are more based off of the recent rewatch.

Second match is a default kinda since I haven't seen Courgette/Zucchini, but I've heard quite a bit about it. I'd like to check it out at some point, but it's not high on my radar. Fireflies is one of the shockingly low amounts of media that have moved me to tears so that says all you need to know about it. (note i'm not saying that's a good thing, especially since two of those times are just from listening to VGM and three of those times are from a single episode of kamen rider w lmao)

I haven't seen either in the first match. It feels bad voting against Courgette/Zucchini, especially as I nominated it, but Fireflies is too strong. Both are good though.

Wow that's awful and yet very believable. Animation really gets no respect as an artistic medium in the west.
